Mosconi Cup Unpicked Players Bail Out

Tell me how you would feel about this......you try out for the Mosconi cup but didn't make the cut. You are offered to go along but you will be taking money out of the pockets of the ones that did make the cut. Wouldnt you feel like a freeloader knowing you are riding on someone else's accomplishments? I certainly would. I would gracefully bow out, wish them the best of luck, and try out for the team next year. I couldn't in good conscience, take their money, knowing I didn't earn it. How could anyone feel any differently?

er... because you were told all eight guys would be part of "the team."

And you were told that "the team" would go to Blackpool.

And you said if selected a s a member of "the team" you'd be willing to make the trip as a non-playing member of said team?

Here's what you don't get:

You aren't the MC captain. How you define "team" and how MW defines "team" would appear to differ. But he's MC captain and you are not.

Guess which definition trumps?

I agree with the first part totally. It is sad so many of you have no concept of "team". By your definitions, all those guys sitting on the bench, standing on the sidelines, or sitting in the dugouts aren't part of the team. Amazing.

I suppose you can look at it that way if you sorta half close your eyes and the sun hits it just right....
If I'm on the bench or in the dugout, in uniform as a back up or a 2nd or 3rd string player, there is a chance I might get in the game and play for my team.
If I'm not named to the team but I'm asked to show up as a coach or consultant, if there's no chance I'll get to participate in the competition to me that means I'm not really on the team.
In the latter my role would amount to that of a 12th man in football. I can yell as loud as I want, but will it really make a difference? is there any chance that the coach on the sideline will yell up at me to finish that hot dog and get in there?
Maybe in the future it's something that Matchroom might consider, expanding the rosters and the races and limiting the number of matches that each player can participate in

Thankfully those three players were briefed on this, and made the right decision

You nailed it!!!

As a two time captain of the Mosconi Cup it's obvious to me that the 3 players made the right decision. If you haven't been to a Mosconi Cup, it's not like other "pool tournaments," it's a made for TV event.

Those 3 players would have been nothing but "third wheels" and made to feel that way. The "fans" would have been ribbing them about being "cheerleaders," and may have been a negative factor.

Thankfully those three players were briefed on this, and made the right decision for the team (and themselves).

We basically have three "mosconi cup caliber" teams in the USA right now......Mark picked one of the better ones and I hope they play well, it will be a memorable experience, that's for sure.

They DIDN'T make the team and made THEIR OWN decisions!

Why are people *****ing?

If "them" sitting in the bleachers and yelling "GO USA, GO USA!" would inspire the TEAM to win, then they should just record a long-playing .mp3 and play it every time an American gets up to the table.

No, I wouldn't feel like a free-loader at all. You see, my concept of "team" is far different than many of yours is. To me, a team sticks together. They are there to build up the other team members to be able to play their best. Both mentally (the main part) and physically.

Anyone that can't do that, should not be part of the team. You are starting as "eight", and you finish as "eight". Just because your role on the team changed, is not cause for abandoning your teammates.

What many of you can't seem to , or won't, grasp, is that the "tryouts" happened a long time ago. Long before Mark picked the eight for the team.

How so many of you play in leagues, which is a team event, and can't grasp the concept of team, is really sad. You are saying that your team members cheering you on when you make a good shot has no effect on your play at all. Why should it, they are nothing more than cheerleaders. Doesn't affect your play in the least.

Makes me wonder why so many of you play leagues, and shun actual one on one tournament play.??? Maybe it's just that you have an out to losing by expecting the "team" to carry you though for a win anyways, and don't have the personal responsibility for your own game like one does in a tournament?? I don't know, but many sure don't understand the team concept on here. Your team members will make or break you mentally. Look no farther than the last MC cup when a few very strong playing members found out about the rest of the team. They fell apart until they decided to screw the team and play just for themselves knowing the team would lose.

What's the big deal about one of the players getting sick. The simple answer is that after a courtesy call telling Matchroom what he wants to do, he simply picks up the phone and calls the best man for the job.
Now that choice alone is worth about 200 postings on a thread. But the fact is that the best man for the job will be the one that Mark chooses. Finito!

Then tell me this- why did YOU go, when you were only holding a title of "captain", and weren't playing? Were you nothing more than a "third wheel" and a cheerleader?

The worlds definition of what a team is, not Mark Wilson or Matchroom. You cannot change the definition of a term so it fits your plan. Find a different word than team, it has no application in your argument.

The WPA is the free loader in all of this. Taking 5% of all the money paid out to the players ---- for what?

By some accounts MW picked some players based on their personality. Not to say they aren't good players. Just a better fit for the team. So if you felt you were a better player than someone who got picked. Kinda says MW thinks you have a character flaw. So if your character is in question. Would you want to travel with that person? Think. MD would have traveled with the team? No need to kiss anyone's butt or try to save face. New captain every year. Maybe next year's captain will take the 5 highest ranked players. Not saying it's better but if picks are just random. Who cares?

All hail Mark Wilson and his brilliant idea of belittling Oscar, Brandon and Jeremy with their honorable mention titles for a team THEY DIDN'T MAKE.

Maybe MW will include you on the MC team. You can go and help out the team by being passive/aggressive toward the Euros.

Sorry little fella... you didn't make the team but you can wear this chicken suit and be the mascot! Also, you'll get a ribbon!

I was the captain, player and bodyguard.

Are you drunk? I guess it's 5 o'clock somewhere. ;)

I went because several of the players wanted me to be captain, and they wanted to win. We came down to the last match and almost pulled off the biggest upset in the galaxy.....but alas, it was not meant to be, such is life.

In 1996 I was the captain, player and bodyguard....that was a bit much...LoL

Mark will still be captain next year whatever the outcome

You always see the glass as half empty, don't you? You say he "belittled them"??? You've got to be kidding me! So, if he just flat out said, sorry guys, you three are out of here, have no use for you, see ya. That wouldn't be belittling them? So, I guess you also see no honor in winning second place in a tournament either? It's all or nothing for you??
