Mosconi Cup

Those that do get raked through the coals -- EVERY SINGLE TIME!

Good people see thru ''coal rakers'' minds quickly. Remember we can agree to disagree. But having raised two kids, exposure to life, hardens the plant for the wind and the storms ahead.

Good point.

Just not worth it for some, I think. On Facebook, people usually choose their words more carefully. There's no anonymity. The pro players are treated with a modicum of respect on Facebook. Here, sometimes, but not so much.

I admire Darren Appleton's contributions here and on Facebook. In fact, on Facebook, he's done some live videos sharing his thoughts and taking questions. He also shows us his trophy room. Really cool stuff!

About Dechaine- I think he has to play on Mosconi for U.S. He is definitely top 5 Anerican players no question. Only bad set he played was last set against Jayson and Shaw didn't even play good until the last day and Shaw basically played perfect on him. Up 10-3 and your crowd is cheering him on like crazy and crowd is really really picking on Mike bad. You can watch YouTube matches of 2016 and you can hear some noise but it sounds like nothing I mean nothing compared to being there live. There is about 20-50 people every shot yelling insults and people laughing and you cannot hear that on YouTube! So I've played money matches in other people's homes, hometown, for $30,000 and more and that's not even 1 percent of Mosconi pressure.

With all due respect Justin. He missed a moderately easy 9 ball combo and missed another not overly difficult 4 ball and scratched in your doubles match. It's a race to five. If you make two errors like that in a mini race at your level, well that's a bad set.

And yes he is a top 5 American player, which is exactly why we will be dominated at this event for the foreseeable future.

I'm going to say one more thing hopefully make some people open their eyes. I played 3 matches. One singles where Mark Grey basically played a perfect set so he deserved to win. 5-1 I lose. Skyler and me win and Rodney and I won. So me personally, I won 2/3 matches. If anyone thinks someone is so far inferior be use you lost a race to 5 and basically didn't have a chance then I'm not sure what to say. Not bashing Europe either, they definitely played better and deserved the win. So most guys played two singles, and 1 double or 2 of each. I've lost and beaten Orcollo, SVB, etc 11-0 actually many times.

Crazy to read some of the things I've read on here I don't think is fair. Obviously Europe last 7 years have dominated. But don't think Dechaine, Skyker, and I can't go win a World title. I'm not saying this to be cocky or prove anything but I would play Albin, or Mark Gray, even 10 ball they outbreak me 9 on spot but 10 ball I've played more and still probably don't break as well. I think Darren is their best player, him and Neils. I've already played Jayson but I think he's a little better player now he's won everything. But also Skylers been to Qatar once, I've never been. We don't play those tournaments, so obsiouvly when you play 25 big events a year I hope you have some titles.

One thing I do agree with though is bar table kills us not just the points but everywhere in US most events are 7ft. Just take this year or next... I go back home, play Chohans tournament, Music City, then Derby(race to 3 banks and 1pocket), then there will be 6-7 more 7ft tournaments, then Turningstone LOL.. And they have tough fields... I could win 5 in a row and it wouldn't be as good as someone getting 5-6th in the China Open in most people's eyes🙄🙄
I'm also looking to start traveling and playing the bigger events. I'm going to go to Philippines for a month and after that plan on playing a lot international big tournaments.
Thanks for posting Justin. I watch almost all of the MC and I hate to tell you but Europe is just flat out better and worse yet, I believe they could put out a B & C team and still easily beat the US.

It's gonna take years, if ever, for the US to be competitive again.

Lol, yah, Justin has stones....This forum can be tough on anyone. Glad to see him posting. Wish the rest of the MC players would do the same.

Eh? This place is the mildest and well mannered place i know.

Just because certain people enjoy repeating things does not make them true.

Azb tough? Where the hell do you people drink!?

His BIGGEST flaw by far is that it's almost impossible for him to stay down on the shot. He seems to jump up every single time.

Steve Davis' dad used to hold a cue above his young son's head as a way of encouraging him to keep his head still. Legend has it his dad put a pint of milk on his bridge hand, to encourage him to help his bridge still.

No pro player will ever stay solid under pressure with a bridge hand like mike's. I like the lad, unlike many around here, but he urgently needs to work on his head and hand, and keep both absolutely still during delivery.

I want to say Albin may not have the same skills for some shots (lol) as JB or others BUT he knows to Play super B saftey and he has the skills to came out from a safe to a RESAFE ,mostley . Which Team USA can't when it comes to a brutal saftey battle on a 9 feet table.

Just my 2 cents:wink:

Ralf

alternate break format AO is pick-em or fav vs ANY USA player, SVB beats him in winner break format

You and Skyler played well, only thing that killed you were the scratches, I think that was the big thing this year, the US cueball found it's way in the pocket a lot more, that costs one game and two at times if you lost on your break.

Merry Xmas U2 :). I look at the choice you made in life, and your rewards are quite remarkable. You took the Ether out of Kiether....who would of ever Thunk :). Your risk was much greater that what's before JB and you did great!! That's even more amazing....in a good way. Ya can't take the Hall outta Buddy....that's for sure . And who'd want too.:p

Hey Berg!

Justin do your self a big favor, don't concern your self with what is said on here.

Worry about it about as much as Shane does.

Stay focused on your already great game.

Do all you can to promote the use of 9' tables for professional tournaments please.

Give lots of thought to your health insurance and retirement plan, when you are older you will be glad you did.

Thanks a bunch for being a good representative for pool!

His coming out is ''unique''. Don't ever recollect of any pro being this organized, this mature at this age before ''giving it a go''. They all took the earlier course in life. In the past that did work, but nowadays the Road is most often the winner.

During the year, the U.S.A. Mosconi Cup players may need to train playing short matches in different locales around the country, with 20-50 boisterous, unsympathetic, drunken howlers.

Getting used to distractions, especially like the ones at the Mosconi Cup is a NECESSITY, because they aren't going away.

A professional sports psychologist is still highly recommended to deal with distractions and other parts of the mental game. The players should pay for his services out of their own pocket because they have to have skin in the game. A free ride insures little perceived value for the student.

Hopefully, all of the players who want to be on the USA Mosconi Cup Team will see the value in increasing their skills in different and needed areas as you have.

Best to you and the rest of the USA Mosconi Cup players.

I think this is good advice...the howling, craziness is actually by design; Matchroom wants the same kind of atmosphere that they have with darts. It sells TV advertisements. The challenge is the team isn't really picked/finalized until shortly before they get on a plane. I'm really curious what our team does/has done to prep for this event? I don't think they have much time, but it would be nice if they could finalize at least ten finalists early on and work with them, keeping the others available as alternates. Maybe even pay them out of a portion of the appearance fees? BTW, Justin and Skylar are proven to be the future of American pool. I swear they haven't got one nerve between them! :D

I know some of the Mosconi Cup players have worked out against Mark Wilson's pool school, which includes Landon Shuffett and some other very good players.

The young have better nerves imo too.

Buddy Hall once remarked to me about another much younger player upon the guy making a very bold shot and said, "Yeah, well just wait until he loses his nerve as he gets older."

Ideally, I envision one way for improvement with the distractions is that the players who want to be on the Mosconi Cup and that is, going into various towns throughout the U.S., playing the same format against the local area's best players, with the pool rooms and bar rooms obtaining the most brazen, obnoxious, insulting buffoons in their locale, hooting and hollering to throw the Mosconi Cup wannabee players off of their game. Same discipline, same format etc. I bet it won't be easy for the elite USA players to beat regional top players with a gang of hooligans wailing at them non-stop........BUT you see, this takes commitment on the elite players' part and I'm not sure if they are up to the work.

Each locale might have trouble rounding up 20-50 rowdy guys but I'm sure a half-dozen could be convinced to play the part needed.

Thanks for the nice post Justin. But for the shirt foul that match could have gone the other way. I really like the idea of you spending a month (or two) in the Philippines. I think you will love it there. There are no bar tables in the Philippines, all 9'! You will have no trouble finding games there. Any poolroom you enter someone will immediately ask you to play, and for money!

Good players everywhere, most of whom you've never heard of, but they can play. I think you'll love the challenge. A good game there is maybe a 5-10,000p bet ($100-200). That is what most good players like to play for. They always play Races, never ahead sets. Something like a Race to 15 or 21 is common. They love all Rotation games, plus Eight Ball. The good players over there prefer Ten Ball. DO NOT play Rotation with them though. You will get schooled if you do.

The conditions are not always the best, you must learn to adjust to all the different equipment you will encounter, and the humid conditions (bring powder!). It has done wonders for Skylar's game spending time over there. He left a boy and returned a man!

I want to assure you of one last thing Justin. You will play on winning MC teams in the future! That's my promise to you.

I wonder if Skyler went over there by himself, or if he traveled with an entourage (of maybe backers, and maybe other players), and how long he stayed over there. I imagine it would be scary going over to the Philippines by yourself, if you have never traveled there before. I hope that Bergman does well over there, and it would be really cool if some video gets posted (uploaded to youtube) with some of his match ups. Love Bergmans game.

Looking forward to seeing you in more international events Justin, I think once you get some experience against those fields you could become a threat to knock one of them off. Shaw might be better today than he was when you played him but you shot great in that match and even the Shaw of today would not have to win.

Nice seeing you back in your old form. Seriously. Things are more lively with you around :)

You enjoy reading this type of colloquy?

See you on the other side.

Unlike many who come here to stir the $hit he amuses me. (Apologies for the punctuation gaffs. There is literally no comma on this tablet. Heh heh)

He usually keeps it brief. And occasionally goes too far. But I usually get more chuckles than annoyances from him. Sorry.
