I think, subject to check, that Alex Pagulayan made 7 balls on the break in 9-ball at the BCA Open 2 years ago, and it was televised. He was playing against Santos. Incredibly, poor Alex was left snookered after the break and didn't run out, resulting in Santos winning that game.
And who can forget Danny Harriman's magnificant break at the ESPN Zone which was televised, the 7-ball challenge. He made 6 balls on the break playing 7-ball, which was phenomenal and quite exciting!
At the 2004 Carolinas Open, Shannon Daulton was practicing before the semi-finals, and the only thing he practiced was his break. He would rack the balls, break 'em, re-rack 'em, and break again, over and over, trying to find the "sweet spot."
Many times when I'm attending a tournament, I overhear players trading breaking strategies. There are sometimes restrictions on breaking, like having to do it from the box or "breaking from the 'D,'" as some call it. At the Joss event at the Turning Stone Casino last August, I was listening intently as Danny Basavich was giving some friendly advice to another player that he was "cut-breaking" with success on that equipment.
I wonder, has anybody ever made all 9 balls on the 9-ball break?!
