Most Overrated Players

I'n your opinion who are some of the most overrated players that a lot of fans feel are great? Male or female.
Mine is Charlie Bryant. I'm sure he's a nice person and a pretty good player...but not great IMO. Johnnyt

Maybe you should try him some and see how you compare sir.

BTW, and I don't know if this is really a reoccuring thing, but I've met a lot of good golfers who were good on the table, and vice versa. I think I read somwhere that Johnny Archer is a scratch or better on the golf course.

The best pool players I personally know are all scratch golfers, and a couple played collegiately. I also played college golf, but I'm not saying I'm a world-class pool player or anything... Yet:wink:

Oscar Dominguez and Johnny Morra...

I'm sure they will reach greatness someday and wish them best of luck, but I think they are pretty overrated right now.

Although there are several decent pool players that are good at golf...9 times out of 10 they aren't as good as they say or think they are. Most full time golfers foam at the mouth to play pool players.

I have no clue as to Archer's golf handicap, but have heard of him blowing several thousands on the golf course more than once. Nick Varner is/was (not sure if he still plays) a pretty good golfer from what I have heard.

This thread kind of reminds me of that scene in The Color of Money when Vincent walks into that first seady pool hall with Eddie, and after Vince introduces himelf to the the proprieter the guy says "this here's Fast Eddie Felson, who the hell are you kid?...the End of the world?

I'm fairly certain none of us have any business calling pro players overrated.

Johnnyt, I have to say I think this is a bad idea for a thread. Who are we to criticize these guys and gals who play better than virtually all of us?

Not many pro players post here but some probably lurk. If I were a pro player and got named in this thread, it wouldn't make me think kindly of AZB'ers, even though it may have been only one person who named me.

I'd have to seriously question this list. Parica may be one of the best pool players ever! Yes, he's slipped a bit. He is over 60 you know. Dechaine is probably the fastest rising star in America today. Gabe has to be one of the best One Pocket players alive today, along with Efren and Scott Frost. John Schmidt may be the best all around player there is. Harriman a close second, and a great banker too. Charile Williams has been playing great the last two years, with many high finishes. Marcus is a solid top ten player in Europe year after year. Darren is only one of the best players on the planet. Jasmin could be the most talented woman player alive today. Thorsten is another top twenty talent worldwide. And Dennis! All I can say is WOW!

Your list looks to me like a pro pool all star team.

Jay's always been a world class clocker;)

It looks like I've Hijacked this thread. Sorry, not my intention.

But I've been playing a bit of golf lately, and It looks like I'm not the only golfer lingering on this fine forum. Golf season is ending, and its about time to ramp up on the pool again. Still, I do appreciate the golfers coming out to talk. Would be interesting to hear some stories of pro pool players and there gambling exploits on the golf course.

I think I even remember reading a thread about Chris Bartram likeing to bet high on the golf course.

John Schmidt is probably the best golfer among all the pool players. Earl plays damn good as well. He might try out for the Senior tour some day.

Parica over-rated? OK, now I've heard it all. Ask the legendary players of the 80's how much fun it was to play Parica. He'd give Buddy fits.

Buddy and Jose never played, the only man Buddy ever avoided. By 1990, Parica was off limits gambling for the rest of the pool world. NO ONE wanted any part of him! And he welcomed everybody! The greatest hustlers on the planet all drew the line at Jose. Mark Tadd - nothing doing! CJ Wiley - give me Efren instead! Johnny - Bustamante please! Buddy - I don't want to talk about it! Sigel and Strickland - CURED! Are you beginning to get the picture?

Did Parica ever challenge Buddy?

Would have been a great match!

Not exactly, but Jose made it clear that he would play ANYBODY! And Buddy knew it.
It kind of reminds me of the situation with Lassiter and Worst years before. Luther had been top dog for many years and when this guy came along who wanted to play him (and had a chance to beat him), Lassiter chose not to enter the fray. Similar imo to why Mayweather won't get in the ring with Paquiao. He doesn't want a blemish on his record.

I'm going to get burned for writing down this list. But this is strictly my opinion and I'm not going to write down why I think each one is overrated just because it would make this thread a war. I have my own reasons why I think these players are overrated. This is just my opinion of who I think are over rated players. This is based primarily on 9ball 10ball skill. I would just like to add that I think you can still be one of the top players in the world and still be overrated.

In no particular order....

-Charlie Bryant
-Charlie Williams
-Dennis Orcollo
-John Schmidt
-Gabe Owen
-Corey Deuel
-Darren Appleton
-Marcus Chamat (Where has this guy been btw?)
-Propoolplayer (you watch any ustream pool you know who this guy is)
-Thorsten Hohmann
-Mike Dechaine
-Tony Drago
-Danny Harriman
-Raj Hundal
-Jasmin Ouschan
-Jeanette Lee
-Jose Parica
Almost forgot...
-Imran Majid (thanks to Jim for reminding me this one)
-Jeremy Jones
-Daryl Peach

All these players are great and I'm sure great people, but to me are all overrated some way or another in the game of 9ball/10ball.

Some of you might be wondering why I put Dennis on there. He is a great player and the best one on that list but he is still overrated to me because he is looked at like a "GOD" and everyone thinks hes the favorite in every tournament he enters. But he fails to get it done most of the time. Hes just a bit overrated in my opinion.

He is also called the number 1 player or money player in the world by many but once again still fails to get the cheese. For example Yang has beaten him twice for the cheese. Yangs probably the most underrated player I know.

Some of these players get "HYPED" up way to much.

Chamat has played all but one tournament in the "BD index", ranked no. 12.

Other names on that list:

1. Orcollo
10. Hohmann
19. Schmidt
23. Williams

Btw you ever check out the asian tournaments and the Euro-tour?

My opinion is that most guys on your list are not overrated by people I know, but rather put pretty much where they are.

You put your chin out though.

I'm sure you'll learn fast. Just be careful not to take too much advice from people. Most people fail to grasp that golf is about getting a ball in a hole, and not about fancy clothes and clubs, and trying to swing like tiger woods.

if you can turn 3 shots into 2 around the greens - you'll get the cheese.

Jay,
You're right, I don't think Buddy & Jose ever matched up for $. They met in tournaments, but I don't recall ever having heard about them matching up.

I looked thru Buddy's biography by the late W.W. Woody. On page 278 it says "When Jose Parica came from the Philippines, Louie Roberts told him "You're a great champion. You can match up with any of the Americans, but don't mess with Buddy."

Jose followed Louie's advice. He played all the others, but he steered clear of Buddy's rifle."

I'm sure each side has their own version of who ducked who!

Wasn't it Buddy who, while commentating on a match, once described two other players who were supposed to match up but Buddy said "All they did was circle each other!" Then he laughed that good laugh of his.

Both of them in their prime....what a match!

I don't really understand this tread. Over rated in what way/compared to what? I think all of the people I see on these lists have the ability to win on any given day/week. Maybe some don't play as well as they used to, but that still does not mean they are over rated.
Is Tiger Woods overrated? He hasn't done anything this year, but does that mean he is over rated?
Lets face it, one of the jobs of promotors/announcers is to hype everyone and create drama. That is their job. I take all of this with a grain of salt.
The guys I enjoy are the ones that are legends in their own minds, and think they are 2 balls better than they actually are.
