My cuctom cue is not hitting like i expected

talk to your cuemaker

Hello all

1st let me say that i have owned this cue maker's cue 3 times before and never had an issue, i am not putting the name down because i dont want to send bad feedback on a cue that is fine...this is the only time i have ever had an issue with this cuemaker's cue...i like a firm. fluid(feel the hit down from the tip to my grip), hard yet not so hard that i cant feel the ball...i have had success with Gulyassy's, Dzuricky's, Mike Webb, Jacoby, Sugartree, southwest, Richard Black, Haley's and Nitti, i have owned other cues but those are the best that fit my personal feel...i recently got a cue from Dennis Hatch, a Gulyassy, that was very basic but hit great...and i know better, not to get rid of a cue once you find one u like but i go through a lot of cues, which will end, and this was a very basic cue in comparisson to some of the others...just goes to show you where the true hit really comes from...anyway, back to the subject, the cue in ? is a 2007, but never used til now...tiger striped maple forearm, with thin cocobolo and tiger stripe maple inlays in forearm, the butt is along the same lines, cocobolo and tiger striped inlays...the pin is piloted, 5/16-14...shaft is a standard maple custom shaft, 13mm, with a 1 inch and an 8th or 16th melamine ferrule, capped and a tiger everest tip, med... i also need to mention that i would prefer to use a short LD ferrule, in a perfect world but i have been told that i cannot do this without losing length on the shaft. so, as i said i would like a LD ferrule but it is not a must, as long as i am getting the hit i want. is there anyway i can produce the hit i want by changing shafts or ferrule or should i call it a day and sell it to someone who likes the hit???

Thank you

james

monday night i shot with a cue i made for a customer a few years ago.it had a slightly harder hit than my other cues.same construction, joint, pin, wood, ferrule and tip.we work with wood and wood is not always the same.i made a nice cue for myself and it hit horrible.i mean horrible! i put one of my customers shafts on it and what a difference.so it was the shaft wood.i would take it to the maker and talk to him.you obviuosly like his work and im sure he wants you happy.

yourhit

Im a firm believer in changing the hit of your cue by changing tips.My experience is out of every ten maybe 2 or 3 are truly good.Im not a pro but merely suggesting.Good luck.

This is very good advice if you never want to order a custom cue. It's a little hard to test hit something that hasn't been built yet though.

Dick

Years ago my neighbor would never order a new car. He would always pick one off of the lot. He said that way he knew exactly what he was paying for and getting. He didn't want to order something that he thought he was paying for and not have it show up. He said he got burned too many times by ordering something, waiting for it and then being delivered with something not to his satisfaction.

new cue vs old cue specs

OLD CUES (3) VS 1 NEW CUE SPECS....HOPE THIS HELPS Mr. Webb

Old Cues

Weight: 19.3 oz, 19.4 oz, 18.8 oz,• Length: 58" 19.4 was 59"• Joint: Elforyn joint, Thread 3/8-10 FLAT FACED, Elforyn joint, Thread 3/8-10 FLAT FACED, Ivory joint, Thread 3/8-10 FLAT FACED, • Shafts: 13 mm and 12.5mm "pro tapered", • Ivorine3 ferrule (LD short), Juma ferrule (3/4 inch), Ivory Ferrule _1 inch)....moori Tips, med and original m/h

New Cue

Weight: 18.6 oz,• Length: 58" • Joint: Stainless Steel joint, Thread 5/16-14 piloted, • Shafts: 13 mm "pro tapered", • capped melamine ferrule (1.250 inch ),....Tiger Everast, med

Thats why i bought the cue without hitting because there are a good amount of differences in the top 3 cues and they hit the same...i think its in the ferrule being capped, my suspicion... and maybe that its piloted...i will either go to the maker or change ferrule and tip 1st

Hi James
I see your dilemma, but there are some major differences between the 4Th versus the other 3.
1-The stainless joint, even though the weight is good, there is more weight at the actual joint. Stainless jointed cues are not for everyone. The same can be said for non stainless joints. Find what you like and stick with it.

2- The long capped ferrule, I personally like a capped ferrule but not that long. area of concern is, how much cap is there.

3- Everest tip, I found this tip to be very firm. Only two of my local players likes it, the others said, Please change it. Even the new moori's are playing very firm, I took mine off after using moori's for years and went back to Triangles. To me the new moori's are broke, they pushed the envelope to produce more and broke them. The new Kamui's, not bad but if you wet sand the black ones to burnish, they bleed black onto the ferrule, The regular ones are good but if you see one layer of glue between the layers that is darker, chances are good it will de-laminate there. Wizards, not to bad but I'm still undecided, they just play different.

Short story, I did a Stainless jointed cue once for AZ member (Koop) All of his cues have stainless joints, Anyways, this one had a cored tulip forearm, I core everything with Maple, even Maple. It was the most stiff cue, I have ever built, end result was, I made Koop another cue. I did another one with cored Brazilian Rosewood but the Brazilian was very light in weight, It played fine. I learned that even though I core everything, the outer shell wood still makes a big difference. Just my opinion.

Ask the cue maker to trade shafts with you or at least try out another one of his shafts to see if it hits different, you won't offend him. He should at the very least give you a good deal on a trade or new shaft.

My advice and I am not an expert would to be change the tip first. I am having the same issue with a cue I recently purchased. Everyone I let use it loves it but it is to stiff more my taste. It also has a wizard tip that has stood up very well but at least in my mind I do not get any feed back from the tip as to where my cue ball is going. I am not in a convient location to change the tip but will do so as soon as I can and than re evaluate.

i would also suggest changing the tip 1st to see how it hits, maybe you could try a Kamui Black Medium or a Medium Soft, imo, It's the best layered tip out there.

Just my 2c worth.

i had mottey make me a titleist cue
when i got it i did not like it

i sold it,took it back in trade
and the 2nd time around i loved the cue

my recomendation to you is to play this cue exclusively for a week or 2

don't even test hit another cue

you might be surprised what happens

I had a Phillippi cue, that I took in on trade. The owner hated the hit. I played with it & also disliked the hit. I changed the ferrule, to a softer material & it made a world of difference, in the hit. I sold it, for much more than I paid for it & the new owner just loves it. Worth a try...JER
