My Fargorate progression

3 new entries. I played a new player that is super into pool 2 salatoo sets. I won 10-2 the first set, and 10-9 the second set. I don't know what happened the second set. She played well, and things didn't go right for me. Her rating jumped up 20 some points. She's a 422P/93 currently. I dropped 3 points. 559-556. I was actually super proud of her, even though I did NOT want to lose my points.

The next day, my two buddies played 2 races to 15 salatto sets. I'm closely tethered to the weaker one because we played 2 races to 10 on Salatto a couple months ago, and he only has about 100 robustness. He was crushed, 30-4. I reamed him out for not "holding his man". I dropped 4 points due to this, from 556-552.

The next day I played an 8 ball weekly event. I played well, and the final 4 (including me) all chopped it. I went up 1, from 552-553.

The fargo league I was in our team had to drop out. We went over the team fargo limit, so all of our remaining matches would be forfeited. There was only 2 weeks left in the season, then the playoffs. I had fun for sure, but it's not the level of competition I was seeking, and I won't join again. I also think it's dumb to have a cap, since the races are handicapped. I voiced my opinion, and the director said it's geared towards beginners being paired with better players, so the better players can teach the beginners. Also so the teams don't get stacked, in which case they can easily outrun the handicapp, unless the races get super long.

So I think 4 leagues in my lifetime. Once in the late 90's, open BCA, on garbage beer stained bar boxes, with big cueballs, 1 foot rolloffs, and carpet as cloth, traveling to a different bar each week. I swore never again. 2nd and 3rd were in-house leagues for one session at the local legit pool room, with in-house handicaps. This was much nicer imo. Good conditions, and no "vegas" trip at the end that I wouldn't want to go to anyway. All stayed in the room. 4th was this fargo league, at a legit pool room. 4 league sessions in 25ish years, with probably 7 years between each one.

All of these reiterated to me that leagues are just not for serious players, at least this one.

Played team pool once.
That was enough for me.
I was talked into it.
I do like one on one, Mano y Mano league though.

I enjoy playing my league but pool is not really a team sport. The camaraderie is a big part of what I like about league. If like a league where you match up with one player each week and play a set and whoever had the most wins is champion or the top players go to the playoffs.

I went up 4 points to 557. Its kind of neat how the graph looks symmetrical, where it almost met in the beginning, and its about to meet at the end.

I haven't played a fargo tournament in a while, nothing near me again in Atlanta. One big one opened up. It was a $300 entry, 600 and under. I played pretty well in it and got 8th place, winning my entry back:). I was quite happy.

After I got out, I had the TD get on the mic and say I was looking for action from anyone that played in the event. I only had one taker, the only 600 on the nose in the tournament. (I had no idea his name or rating until afterwards). He beat me, but I had fun;)

Right around this point, after myself being plateaued at 550 for a few years, I started moving up again when I became aware of my failure modes under pressure.

For me, I would hit balls too thick after about an hour and a half of competition. I figured out that when my brain became tired, it wanted to skip processing some of its input, mostly being the exact tangent line of the shot. The only way to fix it was to force myself to hold my cue with both hands and stand still thinking about the shot for at least five seconds minimum. This feels uncomfortable and weird because I want to play faster than this, but it is the only thing that works.

550+ may just be mental only for you as well.

you traveled to all those? how much did you blow on travel expenses?? seems like you'd be WAY stuck on just that alone.

At least your prog line is going in the right direction!! Up. Keep working hard on your game. Next time that 600 rolls around, take him to the 'No tickee No laundry' Mat!!🤣🤣
Word of advice... When looking for action post tourney, don't have the TD ask. Just mingle about, don't be shy about asking guys you'll hear talking about gambling, if you listen. Find your mark and take care of business.
Or yell "Ring Game on table 1 at 10pm!!!"
That'll do it.

Show me any player who is ahead in pool outside of sponsored top pros:)

In all seriousness, I was already at those locations and found local tournaments to play in. The only event I explicitly travelled to only for the tournament was the Virginia Battle of the Bull.

That's why most road dawgs don't play tournaments. No money to be had unless you constantly place. We hang around the periphery and play AFTER the tourneys' over.
We're the crazies in those all nite ring games you'll see start up after hours.
Most road players I know who did this right are to the good.
They just can't recall it due to age related cognitive decline. 😂😂
Nice way of saying old fools. Lol 😂

I'm not sure what changed, but I almost never find action at tournaments anymore. In the late 90's, we'd all go to the local weekly events. We'd all match up when we lost and gamble until closing time. Today, most players seem to go home right after they lose.

OR, the weekly cheap events seem to have all gone to double elimination now, which takes FOREVER. I hate it. It means no open tables, and it means the tournament ends at 4am.

It seems in my area, most of the competitive play is now limited to tournaments. Or you have to call your buddy to make an appointment and both show up. The days of playing on the tournament night are gone.

You're abso right about that!! Probly should have included that in my comment. Don't want people getting the wrong idea, or they can go hang and find after hours coin. I'm glad somebody put that out there. Thanks.👍🏻

I sure do miss it. Never see it's like again.
One can only hope...

I actually think I'm ahead if we are just talking about expenses vs winnings. Of course I'm barely more than a hobbyist but still. My meager winnings in local tourneys and larger amateur events cover my expenses. I don't waste a ton on equipment. I do spend money wherever I play to support the place.

I think the sweet spot WAS 650-700 Fargo for staying ahead as long as you're not a degenerate gambler. You also need to be sure to not over do beating up on the locals, be sure to tip out tourney directors, and make friends so you can play on an occasional good team so you can knock off a team event every now and then. I won a local tourney a couple months back where I cleared about 1500. That will keep my pool fund in the positive for a few months.

I did say WAS as the Fargo caps are making staying ahead more difficult for just about everyone.

I know what you mean about the Fargo caps, I'm at the level where people who can whip me are still under the cap, someday I might get above the cap and be stuck duking it out in a field of 650+ shortstops. Can I get a smooth path to the final once in my life?

I broke 560 and got to 562. Two weekly 9 ball events in PA that both updated at the same time. I got 3rd in both.

...
It sure looks like you've been trending up since you first got established. Have you been working on your game and/or playing more?

Yes. I haven't had the "bug" in about 10 years. Now since I found a few tournaments with Fargo since starting this thread, I have really been trying to play well. I think it was the impetus to get me to play more.

I feel like my game is a bit stronger the past year. I'm better at hitting the face of the pocket clean, without brushing the rail. And I'm better at a few position routes.

It's so funny, at local weekly events, people are coming up to me saying I'm the best or 2nd best in the room. When I started in the 90's, I was the worse, and I'd talk that way about the actual good players. (Who I know now were in the 650-700 range then).

Edit to add:
Since I've been established at fargo 200 robustness, I don't think I'm actually any better. I think just the fargorate is catching up to me. And/OR, there is fargo creep going on. A few of my buddies that I play close to all seem to be 10-15 points higher than they were when I started the thread 1 year ago. I'm not going on that tangent, as Mike said there is no fargo creep a few months ago. I'll agree to disagree.

Is 10-15 points even a real difference? As far as creep goes, I think i remember some of that discussion but not who said what. I thought the takeaway was that fargo floats, and while creep is certainly possible it's not definitely happening. It seems like two or three shots in a set could be 10-15 points, I don't think I would notice sinking an extra ball and rolling the cue ball an extra 6 inches to get safe or on the right side of the next ball in the context of a set. Especially if you are playing nine ball at a decent level, where a single mistake will often cost a whole rack, or more. Heck, each rack is a two game swing and instead of being hill-hill at 3 apiece, you win or lose 4-2.
