The Bugs Raffle:

Now that this noble endeavor is over I want to take a moment to thank everybody who made this little mission such a success. I would have never believed the pool world could have pulled together so much. Shows you what I know. Bugs is extremely grateful, and humbled by everyone's concern.
Let's keep this option open for other players who may become in need. It makes you feel kind of good to be a part don't it?
On the down side, the response from the people in Chicago was decidedly underwhelming. Outside of Darrel Abernathy and Artie Bodendorfer, I know of no one else from this city of 5 million that chose to help their homeboy out. I don't know everbody on the contributors list, so all those from Chicago who I overlooked please correct me. I love my hometown, Chicago, but it can be a cold cruel city. It's infuriating too, because if a Chicago player is out of town and is asked about Bugs, they are all too quick to brag about how good he played, and how well they know him personally. Is it the same in New York City? Probably.
Anyway, all in all, you guys warmed this old skeptics heart and I'm proud of all of you, and our game.

Thanks, Freddy, for helping to make this raffle a huge success. It is heartwarming to realize that something like this can make a difference.

Makes me proud to be a member of the pool community when I witness this kind of event. God bless Bugs. Keep us posted on how he's doing!

Arrrghhh....forgot about this....was gonna toss in a least a 20 spot but couldn't because I read it at work.Too late or is there still an option? (Raffle or not)

And just a thought on this:

Often the people closest to a specific situation will be the most discreet.It doesn't mean it aint happening...its just a little closer to the vest ime.Just a thought to consider.

I never met Bugs, but I've heard some of the stories of his great play. I tried to imagine how I might feel were I in his situation, but of course one can never really know unless you are there yourself. What I did know was that his spirits would be lifted if a bunch of us pulled together to help him out. Steve did a great job of organizing the raffle and he made it easy for the rest of us to help out. Just between you and me, it isn't often that I make donations to charitable causes, but this one was special.

Sorry, I'm privy to most of Bug's secrets, and believe me, there are no "discreet" donators. Bugs feels very hurt about that too. He has had only 4 visitors so far, Me, Jerry Hubbard, his wife, and Sylvester (the famous black pool sweator). People who have sent money, called, and sent get well cards include (solely), Billy Incardona and Artie Bodendorfer.

Don't forget the 75 or so people that responded on here, with money, donations and well wishes. Most who don't even know Bugs Rucker. Did anyone read the get well wishes that were posted on here to Bugs? That would be nice also. Many people (myself included) sent get well notes to Bugs via this website.

Points to Freddy for going out of his way for this ailing pool legend. Is it too bad the folks in the Chicago pool halls haven't been more attentive to his needs.

Hi Freddie,

I just wanted to say how fortunate bugs is to have a friend like you to support him in this time of need, just goes to show when the chips are down the real friends show up.

I'm from NH and I'm a friend of Steve Booths and I know how much this fundraiser means to him and especially the support that you have given bugs.

For everyone out there who has thought of giving to the bugs fundraiser get out there and complete the deal bugs needs your support and tne time to donate is now.

Bugs

I donated but never saw Sir Bugs in person. I liked the idea of a raffle for a chance to win something. Kudos to those who doanted items to be raffled off.

I would like to see some videos of Bugs shooting on youtube or the like. I want to see him playing banks or one-pocket. I watched one set of videos - but would like to see some more.

Grady's video showing Bugs photo session with some of the greats paying him some respect was top notch. We AZers really pitched in on this effort.

As a "one time" Chicago resident, Shorewood actually, I saw Bugs play many times in the 20 years I was there. I did contribute to the man who gave me so much pleasure observing play. I was also one of the many winners in the auction. If I had chosen a prize, Bill Porter's DVD of the 1980s tournaments would have been right at the top of my list. You guessed it, I won one of Bill's DVD. I would like to thank all the people like Bill, Freddy, Gerald Hubler and the many others who donated prizes for the auction. Many of these guys also donated cash too. Thanks to all of you.
 
I never saw Bugs player either, but it's nice to see he has friends like Freddy who are helping him out in his hour of need. I'm sure he appreciates that more than he can ever say.

Jay, I certainly havent forgotten the forum people that acted so charitably. Bugs is flabbergasted to say the least. The fact that so many people, he doesnt even know, and who cared enough to help out, has humbled him. Bugs knows how cold Chicago can be, so the non-response from his homeboys came as no great shock. I will also relay all the well wishes as I visit him. Incidentally, the wonderful response kind of humbled me too. I just hope he can get well enough to attend the Derby City Hall of Fame dinner in Jan at least one more time.
