Russ...Please don't quote other poster's long posts in their entirety. It takes up bandwidth and makes it cumbersome to discern exactly what points you are responding to.
Not sure what you are talking about. I usually break up posts like this when I am responding to specific points. In responding to your post, my specific point was the quote manner you used was bothersome.
Using arrows <<......>> allows a QUICK way to isolate the specific comments you want to comment upon. Quoting an entire post and then deleting portions of it and doing that repeatedly assuming there is more than one idea that you want to comment on is CUMBERSOME...which is why I prefer the quicker and obvious convention of using arrows (which cannot be confused with quote marks that the post I am commenting on may have used.)
You call it cumbersome. I call it being clear. Your arrows are usually included in a paragraph, melding the words of the person you are quoting with your own ideas. Confuses the idea you are trying to get across. If you insist on using these arrows, at least separate the "quote" from your points. Besides, on this fantastic thing we call the internet, no white out is needed. Click, drag, delete. Click, drag, and hitting the delete button doesn't seem all that hard to me, but hey, what do I know?
I have used that technique in THOUSANDS of posts on dozens of forums over the years and have never had anyone suggest it was confusing in any way.
Roger that. I assume most of these quotes were on forums that did not have an easy way to differentiate quotes in the manner I have above? I mean, really.... Typing [_QUOTE] and [_/QUOTE] isn't THAT much harder than using the arrows, is it? 10 or 11 more letters, and everyone knows it's a quote. Besides, I really doubt noone has ever mentioned that to you before.
Different strokes for different folks...but thanks for your views.
Regards,
Jim
No problem, Jim. This may have sounded combative, but I don't mean it to be. If you are going to keep using that arrow thing to signify quotes, I'll refrain from saying anything about it. I'm just saying it does create some small amount of confusion as to who you are quoting, and including the "quote" is the same paragraph you start your response in is somewhat confusing too, if only because every single other person on the board does their quotes different.
When you do something different than the accepted standard, you can understand where confusion may set in. It's like in network cabling. There is an accepted standard for how to wire a ethernet cable. If a tech comes behind you and sees a different color order and there is a problem with the connection, they are probably going to cut your connector off and rewire it, even though the cable may have been fine. They look at it like if you wired the wrong color coding, you may not know how to correctly crimp, etc..etc..etc...
