I am getting to be a sucker for these old Josswest cues. I really think they are a bargin for what these cues are in quality. This cue came from one of my friends here on AZ. It is a strange cue and I havent seen any quite like it. The veneers are a great combination, and the shafts are straight as an arrow. The other super thing is both of the old shafts are old growth, obviously, and have a wonderful color. They have the old school yellow micarta and it has really turned dark yellow. I had a new Moori tip put on one of the shafts, and the other one already had a layered tip. It is a tad heavier than I play with at over 20 oz, but pretty common weight for those times.

That's a nice one Ken. Refresh my memory ... Those yellow-ish ferrules are micarta correct?

Yes, those are the old school Westinghouse Micarta ferrules. You see them alot on old Southwest cues.

The hit is different than ivory (my normal ferrules), and with the Moori tips the hit is very very good.

Micarta ferrules' hit is unique, IMO.

I loved the cue when I had it. I just never ended up playing with it that often. Good to see it's in great hands!

From Jamie's comment I suspect you had it refinished? It was in such good shape I wrestled with a refinish for a while.

Yep, my cues are normally 98% or better. I thought this cue was about 85-90 condition (original) when I bought it so it was a no brainer for me to have it refinished.

I absolutely love these old JWs as well - and this one is no exception. The 5-veneers, the clean look and the shafts all help and make this a fantastic cue! I like cues that aren't that light but would like to know how you like this cue in terms of playability and balance? I have been thinking about getting a few of these micarta ferrules as I have never had the pleasure of trying one? Does it provide a softer feel than ivory does?

Micarta are more crisp, not softer.

This cue is forward balanced, and similar to my ebony nosed SW in weight and balance. It give it a solid, stiff hit. The Moori soft tips are a great compliment to the cue as far as playablity.

The shafts are full 13mm and the taper is classic JW.

Like you and others, I love the old Josswests and the veneer combo on this one. Congrats.

New ones ain't too shabby either.

Thanks for all of the notes and PMs. I really like the cue. I paid pretty good for the cue, and then after the refinish, I am in the cue quite a bit. But compared to what you spend for a new cue, which isnt the quality of this one I think makes it more attractive. The shafts are the prize of the cue. While these are both at 13mm, it wasnt unusual to see these old JW shafts at well over 13mm.

I havent seen an older one I like better.

We have the same affliction I think. I'm in love with JW cues as well. I just picked up my first Stroud and I know it won't be my last. Very nice cue sir!!!

Who did the refinish for you if you don't mind me asking?
