My new Starkey Cue

How long did the tightness last?

I'm also curious, especially now after Jay has had it and played with it for a while, if the tightness lasted. Or if it didn't, has it settled to a reasonable tightness?

My Varney playing cue came difficult to screw together all the way, but has now settled to a very snug fit... I would imagine wood into wood would wear out more significantly.

My cues joint isn't super tight... snug, but no trouble getting it together. Maybe Chuck has started to loosen them up just a bit.

tight joint

when i started making wood pin cues i wanted the joint to be very tight, most of them sqeeked when being screwed together, and was very very tight the last couple of turns. each pin and set of threads in the shaft are produced one at a time, and each matched only to each other. the shafts on my cues are not interchangable. a few players called it to my attention that in their opinion the threads were too tight. i am now adjusting them to fit a bit looser. the cue that i have been using for couple years has seemed to get a bit looser when i put it together, but it still hits the same. thanks for the interest in my cues. chuck starkey

Yeah! What Johnnyt said. No Starkey at DCC. :D

Thanks for the heads-up Johnnyt. :)

Mine is not unreasonably tight and was made probably about a month or so ago.
Hits fine.

I am wondering, if you left the threads as tight as you originally had them, could you put a thin coat of soap on the threads to help screwing it together? That would help the squeaking too I would imagine.

Regardless, it sounds as though you fixed any problem you may have had.

Soap on a cue? Good luck.

People will more likely use wax than soap.

True... but bar soap is something that's been used to lubricate wood/wood surfaces for some time. Well that's what has been used by my family anyhow. Seems to work quite well. :D

No problem, but I'll stick with wax on my cue. :D

Be sure to check the shaft out on those Starkey's as well, the one I was gracious enough to hit with seemed to have a Laminated shaft, (Looked that way to me according to the grain.) I loved it, one thing, The cue I played with had a solid one peice cue feel, comparing a Starkey to a house cue however? No way, Mr Starkey has it going on with the playability, the Style however isnt exactly what I prefere, doesnt matter, if mr Starkey sent me a pink and purple poke a dot cue to use, Id use it, and be damn happy about it...

Im not getting anything, and If I personaly didnt like the cue I would definatly say so.

Chuck sent me a cue a few months ago for me to check out. I could not put the shaft and butt together! It was just too tight for me to join the pieces. I could get it screwed down to about an eighth inch from tight, and could go no further.

Naturally I didn't like this and called Chuck. He said no problem, send it back and he would loosen it up a little. Instead I took it to my local billiard supply, where they have a cue repair shop. They put some lubricant on it and got it screwed together for me. They worked it around a bit and got it to where I could do it myself. It's still super tight!

So then I played with it a little and went on here and said it was the closest to a one piece feel of any cue I had played with. And it is. Now that I have got back into playing a little, I tried it out again today. This is one very special cue stick! I really like it now, more than before.

I have over 30 cues in my collection, some from well known cuemakers. My favorite playing cues are my Josey (number one), then my Corsair and a Ned Morris. I have played with (and owned) cues from just about every noted cuemaker, and I will say this. The Starkey cue hits like no other cue I've ever owned! Period!

It is a unique hit that is clean and crisp and alarmingly accurate. Solid and powerful are other words I would use to describe the hit. Talk about low deflection, try zero deflection. The cue ball goes exactly where you aim it, every time. English applied does not deflect it's path. I do not know how to explain this other than to say you must hit a few balls with one of his cues, then you'll understand what I'm talking about. Especially if you're a pool player that can appreciate a good hitting cue.

I think what he has done in creating this new type of joint will eventually be as important an innovation as when Predator came out with their new shafts. I can't see it not catching on, and probably being copied. It just works too good.

I did not communicate with Chuck about this post and he does not know I'm posting it. I haven't even met the man. I have no deal with him other than I agreed to try the cue he sent me and let him know how I like it. I already did that. This is strictly a post to let those of you who search for a better playing cue be aware of this cue. It's a different hit then I've found anywhere else and I like it. I think it's worth it to try one out for yourself.

I guess if I had to define how it feels, I would say it is most like the hit of the best one piece cue I ever played with, with a better finsh and feel to it. I do not know if he is making cues with a wrap yet. Mine does not have a wrap. This was NOT a paid Ad! I don't even get a toaster. :)

Anyone--------
May I please get contact information for this cue make?

cheers--------BW

Chuck can be reached at (660)438-7323 H. (660)723-1346 C.

Since we failed to specify an amount in your bet that Luat would win the U S Open, I'll accept the cue as full payment.

Since Dennis got one and then Jay posted this thread I also got one... well I got two now. Chuck is now making the shafts a lil smaller for me. The dammed thing hits so beautifully.. so pure and sweet that it's making me leave my beloved Sailor playing cue home.

The cue I just got has a solid shaft... over 20 growth rings per inch. Chuck only uses premium grade high GRPI wood for his solid shafts. That's surely one of the reasons, amongst others, for the outstanding hit.
