My Plan For This Year, Whats Your Plan????

First Goal
Getting back to the Derby in 2010 and playing in the 9 ball Banks.

Second Goal
Seeing my pool playing friends again. VooDoo Daddy for one and some of my Cincinnati buddies.

Got to practice my banks more.... and more... and more..

Last year I was working out alot and felt just great. Then I injured my shoulder, had rotator cuff surgery, reinjured my knee and my lower back. About a month ago I was coming back from the US Amateur qualifier where I played injured and I just decided that I cannot live like this. So I have two goals right now, First I decided I needed to get serious about putting my health as my first priority. Went to the doc and got cortisone shot into my shoulder and knee for starters. Since then I have been working out 5 days a week now for 3 weeks and I already feel great again. Shoulder, knee and back are all strong right now and only a little discomfort.

My second goal is to show up at the US Amateurs in Tampa and come prepared. Win or lose I want to be able to walk away from the experience saying I came prepared. To that effect I am going to start playing daily at my house this week and try to play at least 5-10 hrs a week through the beginning of Nov. After the US amateur I plan on focusing on working out and giving my free time to my two sons. Lifting weights and playing pool never seem to jibe well with me so I have to choose a side. Also, Cub scout camping season is here nd the good times I can have doing that are better than any pool tournament. (after the US Amateur of course  )

Whats funny is that I won an entry into the Seminole pro event for snapping off the Florida Amateur event and now it looks like I cannot take time off of work to play in it. If the tour allows me to, I am going to put a player in the box in my place. I already have that player picked out, I just hope the Seminole Tribe is agreeable to this.

Lots of good stuff guys! Working on your Health and Drawing the ball are probably the 2 most important on here!

Personally my goal for the next year is to make Gus Briseno a more humble pool player! Starting next month I will be able to put 50+hours a week into practice and my game is going to jump, you better believe it! I plan on snapping off at least 1 DCT event, if not several, and being on top or close to the top of points list for the tour. I am going to make some of them boys at Kolby's a little more humble too! The last thing is I am going to hear Jasoncruger complain that the Tucson boys are starting to win all the money! lol

Any of you phoenix boys think I am full of it. Try playing me the same as we do now in about 3 months. I will bet a few dimes on that game!

I've been playing in a 9 ball league once a week and practicing when I can (not near enough table time) and I play players my speed or better each week. The match is a race to 9 with no handicap.

When I started the league my winning % was better than 50%, but lately it's dropped below 50%. In my defense the league has picked up some good players and the competition is better, but i've noticed i'm having trouble finishing my matches. I've lost count on the matches i've been way up in the score only to let my opponent back in the match and I end up losing. Last week I was playing the one of the best players in the league and I was up 8 to 3 in a race to 9 and I kept letting games get away by making simple mistakes and then he made the 9 on the break and lucked it in once and before I knew what happened I lost the match after being up 8 to 3. That match was a tough one to lose since I had it in the bag.

I've got to work on my concentration this year and not let up when I get a lead. It's happened a number of times and that's one of my goals for the rest of the year.

All plans seem to get sidetracked but.......

I plan on making sure there are more events held in Michigan for players of all levels and hopefully confirming the billiards expo in Michigan shortly.

I would also love to find a way to spend more time with my daughter again who is now 20 and just realized a year ago she loves pool and is a natural at shot making. Shes pretty hard headed and doesnt listen to me though about shapes and how to play the game so we'll see if she listens to her boyfriend who plays good.

hmmmm........I would love to find time to play again myself. I quit for 14 years and got back a couple of years ago but only running events not playing. I miss the playing........I actually miss winning most of the time that was a blast to be one of the best there was in an area. I lost fire when I quit and cant find it. I have no desire to beat anyoe to death and I need to find it...............has anyone found what i lost?

I think seeing my friend die in my arms at a pool room took life out of me. Thats when I quit and I cant seem to get the old me back even though I truly want to be competetive and win on the table.

I guess my end goal is to play enough and care so I can play and place in higher level events again if i choose to.

Health, family and pool! Thats what Im aiming for this year!

Good luck with that...

i need to get lucky with that,

anything I do at the gym will be big for me, since i trained for 14 years I have a solid base to work from muscle memory is still there, I will see results to a point very quickly then level off, i will gain 15 pounds the first moth back and then lose as much fat as possible over the next year(if everything goes as planned, diciline is not a issue here). I cant ever body build anymore-which really really hurts, I remember when I was having heart problems before the back issue. I walked out of the gym cryiny-litterly, I hadnt cryed in probably 4 years, I did when my dad died. I knew with my heart issue that bodybuilding was gone forever, It would be like any pool player losing his hand, eyesight. I did get back in the gym sometime later and was in very good shape when the back problems exploded. I trained until the pain was so bad I couldnt stand it. I started using a injectable opiate bodybuilders used long long ago for pain so I could train. Eventually I stopped the gym and Nubain(pain killer).

I'm starting the gym very lightly after the US Open, Mika told how he trains for pool at the gym. If you are too sore especially your upper pec muscle and bi-cept secondly, you cant play pool cause of the stiffness of the healing muscle. Mika told me what to do, he said stick to 20 rep sets using light weight, you'll activate the muscle but not tear it down so it dosent get stiff when it repiars itself. You wont get any size training like this but you get fit and a fit player has the edge over a un-fit player everything else being equal. I firlmy believe this. So this is exciting-I have a plan here and I will post the results as time goes on.

Learning to win, thats a whole different ball game, and I dont have the tools, or experience I have in fitness. I did have a winning % as a player for many years(I'm not counting beating kids for $35) but in action at $100 a set or more. At the time $100 was alot of $$$ for me. So this area is what I must put all my focus on this "pool season", of course everything else i learded this past year will still be going on as well, i'm just focusing on the score now. Befor I waas happy to play good. Now I want to play good and win-which was not happening enough this past year. So I have my work cut out-there is no short cut here. I have alot to learn.

I played the 10 ball Ring Game atthe derby 2 years ago. I knew I had no chance to win it. I had a couple of goals and very good reasons to play in it. First I wanted to support pool-so it was a $3000 donation into Shanes pocket, LOL(your on the make up kid), I had to test myself-I have played with 100 people watching me before-but never under the lights in that big of a setting. I was a very shy person years ago in pool(and life) and was there just un noticed. I wanted to see how my nerves would be in that setting, I was very relaxed and felt like I belonged there(I dont interms of how weak I am with my game), but I was very comfortable. I had another goal, I just didnt want to be the first person knocked out. I was the first out with Atr Keck at the same time. I never really had a shot, which we all know is the case in ring games sometimes. I really wanted just one cosmo to see what it felt like to get in gear and then break and keep going. I never really had that chance. But I know I wasnt shy to be there, I had fun and if my $$$ is right I'll do it again. Perhaps the bank ring game next time.

I havent made $$$ in 17 months and counting. that is to Say that my bills every month have been 3 times my income. Thats just how it is. everything I do has been out of savings, I never planed to fail, but I didnt fail to plan-so I saved alot of $$$ when things were rolling good. Its been rough this past year I have lost pile of $$$, equity, etc. I did give a promis last year to do it this year and i'm sticking to that, I also said that I hoped to make it bigger this year. If I can I will.

I am just waiting on Fatboy to play me some like he said he would when he called me out a year ago.

Let's see...................

.............................................................................................What are you doing?

I'll go with.....

Gettin' busy.....
Gettin' fit.... fitting into those pants in the back of the closet...
Joining the 100 club in 14.1

And .......

Learning how the heck to "embrace the shake"...lol.... or how to 'let it go'

td

Working on becoming the first APA 8 in eight ball. I might have to petition on this one....

On a more serious note rebuilding/tweaking the whole game first...then train/practice/league/gamble, rinse, repeat.

I popped up back in the pool scene about 3 years ago, Alot had changed while I was biz man, The internet was invented, Some guy named Shane blew into the picture, Rodney got gray hair(no disrepect if you see this Rocket). Some things stayed the same, Jays hair line, JA still beating the world to death, Efren scratching his head.

The first year I was back I was recovering from 5 back operations(most recent was about 18 months ago) So the first year I played good in spots and couldnt play period in other times. I somehow became "Fatboy" an old name I have had since 86, but I put myself for better or worse into the pool scene. Love me or hate me is one thing, but they all know me-and thats kinda fun, I enjoy people. So the first year back was good.

Second year back I had a cue picked out that I really play good with, I used 8-10 cues the first year, I finally settled on a cue that brings out the best in me. I didnt let the maker or some sentmental thought lead me to the cue. Gus is my all time favorite cue maker, I wish I could have settled on a Gus, Lord knows I tried to get a Gus that brought out the best in me. I was able to play almost as much pool as I wanted, so I put myself in spots with all strong players for a year, It helped me alot. I could have used that knowlege when I was 18. What didnt happen this past year is I didnt win very often, not because I didnt play good, I did. But beating guys like Max Eberly aint a bargain.

So now the "Pool Season" is starting up for me. I took the summer off, I played hard for 10 months then end of May 09 I started to play 1-3 times a week, I never let myself get out of stroke all summer, I didnt want to lose anytime when I started back up. I'm hitting the ball good.

This year I'm focusing on only 2 things getting into shape(my back is good enough I will be able to start the gym right after the US Open). My second goal this year is to learn to win. I had a high win % many years ago, this past year I got pounded by champion after champion. I have played a couple soft games this summer. My friend John Mortan(RudeDog) used to say "I got to find a way to win" when he was way behind in a set. And he almost awalys did figure out a way to win and dig himself out of that hole he was in. I need to learn that-THIS YEAR!!!

So thats it, getting fit and winning are my 2 main issues this year.

What are you doing?

  • I'll be pushing for bigger and better in the pool world.
  • I'll be riding my bike thousands of miles.
  • I'll be making you (FatBoy) look and cry like a little girl at the gym when you are ready.
  • I'll be inching along with regard to my formal education.
  • I'll be purchasing a home of my own.
  • I'll be getting a dog (after the above).
  • I'll be continuing to expand my business - crossing, more so, over into endurance sports.

and I may get off my ass and make run at it as a player again - starting with the Predator International 10-Ball Tour (gotta show them Euro's wassup!!!)

Corey you have really transformed your physiology. Tell us a little about how you did it and what was the moment when you got the leverage to follow through.

Damn you APA! LOL!

So, I started to respond to the above, but did not want to hijack Eric's thread.

Simple answers -

How I did it: diet and exercise
Leverage: my 30th birthday

More details...one day will be in a book or interview somewhere. Sarah Ellerby's got nothin on me  Well.....ok, she's got somethin!

Edit: Something else about that pic; I lost to Henry Brodt (eventual winner) on the A and B side of that tournament. I'll be damned if I let anyone else win two sets in one tournament again!!!

well congrats on your achievements both on the green felt and off. Most people want to change their physiology, some try to do it and few actually achieve long term at it. Kudos again.

Back to pool...

One goal I do have this next year in pool that I didnt list before is I want to improve my preshot routine and experiment more slowing my game down to reduce unforced errors.

I'd also like to experiment with pausing right before the final swing (think buddy hall style pause).

John Ditoro had also suggested I make major changes to my actual fundamentals in stance, stroke and alignment. I need to work on this as well during the next year.

Now that my children are out of High School (second time around) I'm going to get in shape and practice more pool. At 55 years old I can't afford to weigh 250 pounds anymore and I now know it has a direct effect on my pool game.

So my goal is to lose weight and play in more Open tournaments in the Pacific NW. I might even play in the Reno Open if I get a chance in the next year. I figure I have about a 7 year window where I can still play competitively and see how good I can get.
