Who is this mystery man?

There is a true gentleman of the game in this picture. As the stories go......he matched up with the best in three cushion billiards. One of the only guys in the world who could play geometeric three cushions. There was a guy by the name of Willy Hoppie who refused to bet with this mystery guy in private sessions.

The second guy looks like Lassiter and in the center looks like Cue Ball Kelly. The Tall guy closest looks like Slim Barris. I am just guessing do you actually know?

Is it Cannifax?

I'm not sure of the spelling but the only guy around there who could cause trepidation to Hoppe was a player named Cannifax. Was his first name Arthur? I heard about him when I was a kid. The second guy is Wimpy and the third guy is Harold Worst and the guy to the right probably is Cue Ball Kelly.

What is "geometeric three cushion"? I assume you meant to say "geometric 3c", but I don't know what that is either. Is it just another name for regular 3c billiards?

Thanks.

I don't know why I didn't think of it earlier, but if it had anything to do with geometry or geometric 3c, maybe it was a long lost relative of Bob Jewett....Ignatz Jewett.

Referencing the mental aspect of being able to use the diamonds of the 3c billiard table, in relationship to playing mathimatically/geometric in your head.

yes

Is he from Detroit?

He was from Detroit, and all of the names that have been listed thus far are incorrect. Keep them coming and we will see what happens.....

I'm still unclear on what you mean by "geometric three cushion." Can you give an example of how he would play a particular shot that others couldn't do?

And maybe Willy Hoppie was afraid of him, but how about Willie Hoppe?

Speaking of Hoppe, his best-ever average in a tournament was 1.33 or so, and Dick Jaspers just had a tournament average of 2.67. 3-cushion has come a long ways since the 1950s.

My guess is the Seattle Kid -- the one who really invented the (corner-5) diamond system, unlike Hoppe who never used it.

Man oh man! Your long term memories are better than your short term.
Definitely a symptom of the 70's. Jack used to manage the high class 3c's club at the Elite Detroit Athletic Club. Jack was an intelligent humble man with tons of wisdom in both life and pool. He took me under his wing and explained the dynamics in physics of English. A very respected gentleman in the game spanning at least 30 years. Definitely an unknown wizard of the game. :D
