NACPBA, Anyone suprised?

Is anyone really suprised at the NACPBA's announcement to cancel the tour? Its sad that I cant even get excited about new tours anymore because so many of them come across as little more than fly by night ventures to pick up any quick dollar they can from the pool community and then vanish as fast as the sprung up. All I can say is thank god for TAR. These two gentlemen are the only ones keeping any kind of hope I may have alive. Keep it up guys and you definately have my full support.

No. The whole fiasco was so amateurish that it was almost parody.

their Acronym is too darn long!!! :D

yeah I thought it was a combination of the NAACP and AARP, I dont have a clue what those 2 stand for but I heard of them and when I saw theirs thats what I thought,

I was told from a reliable source they lost 2 partners and the rest went into the PBA or some other start-up bowling league, which sounds more jive than the whole thing did anyways, it sucks. Man it sucks,

I wish I had the kind of business that could utilize a pro-tour and have it break even for me and make the players a decent living, but none of my businesses can utilize that kind of advertizing, Fed-X does it with golf and when I look at my Fed-X bill I see where they get the $$$ to have the Fed-X Cup on Golf and most people who golf have a Fed-x account so it makes sence. I'm a nickle and dimer compaired to Fed-x like .00002385395% their size or something like that actually smaller.

I have been brain storming a way to organize something and as of yet I cant come up with anything, I'm not saying I will, but I AM saying that I have been giving it some thought and how to make it work, Added $$$ tournments are ok but thats not a solution for all the players just a paycheck for a few players now and then, its better than nothing, i'm trying to think wider, i make no promises of anything but I do PROMIS that i'm trying to come up with something, and i have been known to mastermind alternative businesses and thats what a trour is gonna take-something out-side the box. wish me luck.

Believe me if I think i'm close to a concept i'll be the first one to ask questions, not wait to make some announcment, and the $$$ wont be millions to the players from day one, it could grow into that but if I come up with something thats workable on a reasonable level it will take several million to start and then scale it up so the players are well compensated, not advertizing some huge amount of $$$ to attract attention or these days scare off people-rightfully so. the trick is to design a scalable modle that could attract new sponsers outside pool and everytime we sign one on then the prize $$$ goes up, also having open books to the players not public is also necessary-however they have to understand that the people working hte events cant work for free either, so there is a learning proccess for everyone-especially me. just some random thoughts, dont hold me accountable to this just yet, i'm just thinking out loud. or get mad at me i'm learning as I go and think.

Well Fatboy, after meeting you at DCC this year, i'd be more than happy to help with something like that. I'm just getting ready to graduate with my Masters in business and i cant think of a more exciting venture to be a part of. I honestly think it will take a pool player to make any kind of realistic tour that can sustain. Its one of those opportunities that having a good business mind wouldnt be enough, it would have to be a labor of love. I've often thought about the same thing myself, but the funding and support needed is so much that it would take alot of contacts and foot work to get the necessary sponsorship. But what the hell, everyone and their mother seems to think they can start a profitable tour anymore, why not you? lol

The disadvatages of ventures which incorporate "labour of love" employees/owners frequently far outweigh any advantages/savings gained by the involvement of the "labour of lovers". Any normal business has to be sustainable after taking into account reasonable expenditure for the work that has to be done. Fatboy has already put his finger on that one.

On the whole, I'd say that the overall odds of success are far better if the person in main charge of operations wasn't a pool player or dedicated pool enthusiast at all, as long as he had access to pool knowledge and the savvy to know when to ask questions of that knowledge base.

A pool tour founded and operated on the potential moving sands of the largesse of a wealthy benefactor would of course be quite another matter and many normal business rules would probably be suspended in that contingency.

The IPT for example was an unusual animal in that it was a venture which disingenuously tried to sell itself to the pool world as a venture guaranteed by the largesse of a wealthy benefactor, whilst in truth it was a venture which from day one was always going to have to be a sustainable business.

It's very short odds that the unsustainability of that business, which quickly became evident, largely arose in the first place as a result of confidence being placed in what transpired to be the grossly over optimistic and commercially naive expectations of one or more famous pool players as regards the potential interest of sections of the public beyond the small hard core of hardened pool players. When you get down to the nitty gritty of it and set aside the emotional aspects, the snake oil glibness and verbal dexterity of KT was really just a sideshow to that fundamental underlying error in judgement.

My bet is Fatboy understands that very well already;) :)

Not surprised at all. A billiard tour starting on the scale of the IPT or NACPBA absolutely positively will never work. Why? Simple. It will take time to be profitable. With that amount of dollar investment, the investor/s will lose too much money too fast and will pull out every time before it ever has the chance to succeed and turn a profit. Nobody is going to sit around very long and watch their pocketbook being sucked dry at that rate.

I think the NACPBA had a good vision and that it might work, but you need to start at say $50,000 or maybe $100,000 a tournament, not $1,000,000. You build it up once it starts to take off and sustain itself.

Short answer no. Lets recap.
1. Website that hadn't seen the spell check option
2. Shadow investors
3. canceled Diamond order
4. too much money in prizes to start out with
5. the acronym was absurdly long
6. I dont think it would be a good idea to come out with a celestial alien cult right after heavens gate.

even with millions of dollars it would take 10 years to make a difference as a sport in America.
I never really bought into this NACPBA coming to fruit.
(especially as unprofessional their website was)

I dont know about everyone else, but its getting old seeing people prematurely announcing events and plans before anything solid is in place.

See, this is where i'm not sure I completely agree. Dont get me wrong, I can clearly see where you are coming from with it and in all probability you're right. Its just that in many of these cases that person is going to need to hire someone anyway who is knowledgeable of billiards, and probably best if they are well-respected within the billiards community. Instead I just feel that the right person with the proper amount of business savy and sense mixed with a true passion for the game might be the best candidate to take on such a venture. I'm not saying someone that doesnt have the sense to do things the right way and possibly pull out or pull back if necessary. Its just i've seen it happen too many times, a business man with nothing personally vested with the venture takes it in directions that would hurt or side track it, simply because they are not in tune with their less than normal target market. I know emotions are to be left at the door with business, but there are some ventures that I feel that just doesnt apply, this being one of them.

Well at least we can get that alien cult thing going now....

Fatboy,
I'm self employed & love to travel to pool events. I would love to support such an event by paying my own expenses to attend and do anything from venue set up & tear down to being a referee. No charge.

I think 2 things HAVE TO happen to make pool on TV more popular.

1: It has to be broadcast live, and when it is rebroadcast it should not be edited. There is nothing worse than the last 10 minutes of an edited rebroadcast. If the score is 6-4 in a race to seven, you know player B is not going to make up 3 games in 10 minutes.

2: Pool should be broadcast in 1080i True HD with more cameras & better angles. In standard format you can't tell what the balls are, or the spin on a measles ball. The current format does not show the intricacies of a pro player's game, which is what makes the game entertaining.
