Need help in settling an argument.

... Anyone want to try pocketing an eight ball off of the top of the rail without scratching?

I would not bet against Mike Massey doing this in a few tries. Send the cue ball up on the rail with masse to bring it back onto the cloth, hitting the eight ball just enough to send it into the near-by side pocket.

Thanks Ironman. According to the AZ archives, it was at least a 3-man group including Robin Adair (Rockin' Robin), Randy Gottlicher (randyg), and the late John McChesney. I'd be curious to learn a little more about the group, Texas Express Promotions. I might have to dig a little more sometime.

Wow! That's pretty surprising. Although it might be kind of a fun way to play in a casual game. Was it a competitive situation?

We were playing a $200 set when the cue ball went air born and came to rest on top of the rail. Hemade theball he was kicking at and the next ball rested in the jaws and he got out. I was sick, but, Iwonthe set, so it was ok. It was comical though.

right?

I'll bet against him making it . . .

Bob,

That wasn't a set up trick shot, that was running out to the eight ball and making it. I'll be willing to let Mike try it a few times and bet against him being able to do it. These old tables had the big metal plates around the pockets to make things tougher too. Nothing is impossible but the deck is ridiculously stacked against anyone making that shot.

I played Mike many years ago and watched his exhibition a few years ago. I think my money is pretty safe.

I'm afraid you're dealing with an idiot. Do the best you can, but do not turn your back on him if he seems angry. He may also be a sociopath.

That made me laugh.

The topic of balls on the rail reminded me of one time when I was playing a complete beginner. I wasn't very good myself but I was Mosconi compared to this guy. Real big guy who seemed incapable of hitting a ball at anything other than warp speed. He shot a ball and the cue ball jumped up on the long rail, bounced over the side pocket, bounced a couple more times, rolled down the rail and dropped in the corner pocket. I told him if he could perfect that shot he could make a lot of money betting people that he could do it. He was so new at pool that he didn't realize he had done anything unusual.

Almost every year since 1948, the BCA has published the rulebook, and sponsored numerous events including the junior championships, and they hold that wonderful bash every May in Vegas. That's primarily why I use BCA rules in my leagues and tournaments. They've led the way. I have disagreed with them now and then, but I still use their rules to the letter because they've proven their staying power.

no such entity......hmmmm....interesting. Because of some delays on my part of taking over the Texas Express website from Mr. McChesneys wife, we lost the site to some trucking company. IF there is a demand, i will print the latest version of the rules, and make them available to all for just a nominal fee with postage.
We, myself, mcchesney, and randyg probably dropped thousands of sets of rules across the country during the last 25 years or so, in two or three different forms. If i was computer literate, i would launch a new site, complete with the most current set, but alas, i am not.
and for you newbies, just for your info, we ran more pool tournaments and gave away more money to more pool players than anyone in the history of the sport. Texas Express.....the only way to play.

That my friends is why Robin was one of my partners in business. Texas Express formed in the 1980's. I personally ran around 40 tournaments a year. See the USA in my Dodge van. Texas Express was perfect for pool, just when pool needed us. We were the original "TOUR"!

As a side note, I was also on the BCA Rules Committee during that time period. Texas Express gave the BCA rights to publish our rules under the BCA heading.

Last but not least, Texas Express still runs a few tournaments a year....SPF=randyg

If I'm not mistaken Bob Jewett was 1/3 of the original group which came up with Texas Express rules. He should be able to tell you everything you need to know about the rules.

Yes, you are mistaken, sorry.....SPF=randyg

As long as I live I will never forget the McDermott Masters you guys ran inVegas at the Sands. It must have been around 92 or 93. I forget how many entries there were, a lot, but it seemed that everything that could go bad, {or slowly} did and for some reason that event drug on and drug on. I think we fiinallygot out of there about 7AM Monday and all 3 of you looked as if you had been pulled through a knot hole backwards.

I felt so badly for you guys and it was obvious as to how painful it was for you. There was a match being called by John at about 4 AM and the players wife yelled very loudly that he was in the restroom and on his way. John responded that if he wasn't at the table in 18.2 seconds he was going to forfiet him and that he had heard every excuse anyone could ever dream up.

Everybody in the place cracked up except poor old John who looked as if he were going to explode. It was a wild event. Sometimes no matter how good you are or how well planned you are, things just go badly.

That was a great Tour, and we had great fun with it.

Thanks Lewis. Close to 700 total entries. About the same number in Palm Springs but alot smoother.

Another side bar story: While we were at the Riviera Hotel in Palm Springs a gentleman asked us for a favor. He was doing a media shoot around the pool and needed some "extras" to be pool side starting at 6am. Most of our group (pool players) told him were they would be at 6am and it wasn't going to be pool side. A couple of us showed up the next am and wouldn't you guess, it was a NUDE Playboy shoot. About a dozen nude beauties strutting their stuff. It was about an hour later that I was able to get out of my pool side chair and limp to my room:-)....SPF=randyg

Yep sitting by the pool can surely make one stiff!!

I don't care what rules we play by, just as long as everyone is playing by the same rules. No creative rule making in the middle of the match. LOL

I heard a long time ago that if the cue ball came to rest on top of the rail without touching the wood, it was considered in play but have never seen it actually played that way and I've been playing almost 50 years.

Probably just an urban legend.

Stones

I have seen shots that come off the table (in pro competition) and back on, and they counted as fair, the player stayed at the table. So as long as the ball does not drop on the floor, it's good. If you made a ball after one leaving the table top, you continue to shoot, if somehow the ball stopped on the rail, that's where it would stay.

That's not quite how the Rules read.......SPF=randyg

^ Agree, and wonder why people are under a different impression

A ball resting on the rail and still being playable doesn't make sense, would you guys please run different scenarios in your brains and try to figure out why?

I'm guessing you weren't one of the nude beauties.

My room owner and I have ongoing "arguments" about 2 things mainly: He says rooms, including his, should follow texas Express rules--I say BCA World Standardized Rules.(when I try to Google tex exp, nothing comes up. Are they still solvent?)
Also he says the a ball which somehow comes to rest on the cloth portion of the top of a rail is "in play"--I say no.

I think the owner can do as he wishes, as he is paying the bills. Your best weapon is a copy of the new BCA Rules updated 10/07. they are download able from the this link, but in the end the "owners" has the last word as it is his room.

We have a bar here in the Valley that has a nice weekly tournament, but the house rules are anything but BCA, but they draw 30-40 players weekly for their tournament with their weird house rules.

PS I understand you fustration with as you say "ongoing arguments". :(
