I really would like to do a couple of lines in my book on the Brooklyn Pancho clone, Santa Ana Rose. Her real name was Judy and she was originally, before Panch' got hold of her, a school teacher.

She was a product of the California 70s. Pancho turned her into a brutally obnoxious, rough hustler (pool). I went out hustling with her once. I say again once. The only way I escaped a beating was because no one knew that I was with her.

Jay, the only facts I have on her was that her first name was Judy and she was a Jewish school teacher.

Freddie, she was pretty well known by the pool crowd in SoCal at the time. Pancho pimped her into all kinds of spots (mostly bars) where there was action. She was the best woman player out here until Robin Bell came along in the mid 70's. Someone trapped Rose in a game at the original Hard Times in Costa Mesa playing a 16 or 17 year old Robin and she got soundly beaten. After that I didn't hear much about her. She drifted away from Pancho and pool, maybe to go back to teaching. :embarrassed2:

Freddy,

I spent a little time hustling with Rose in LA. She got into a lot of action in the bars and played well enough to get the money if you set up the table for her.

She had the longest hair I have ever seen. Had to hang it over the head of the bed at night.

Bill Stroud

Gabby from Houston ran around wih her for a while in the early 70's when he was out here.

Other than seeing her around the action joints, I never interacted with her.

Sounds like Stroud "interacted" with her, knowing how she did her hair at night and all.

Rose and the Inglewood days

I remember her from Tropicana lanes in Inglwood,CA a big time money roost in a time period from 65 to 70 and she also hung at a pool hall called the Billiard tree also that I managed for a while on Imperial and Crenshaw in the same neighborhood same time period. She use to come around with a fellow named Tony Bellows who would gamble on anything and also other times with a hustler from the east coast named Mel and a couple of local guys named Jerry Grimm and Gary taylor, they played a lot at the Tree and a country bar a few doors down called the Saber room. When they were around things were always loud and on the verge of some kind of trouble, and me, I would host it after hours in the Biiliard Tree,I would throw on the music pour the Beers and wonder why in the hell I would torture my self like that, but it was exciting watching the ciaos.I have a few stories, but somethings are better left unsaid.hope these tid bits helped.

Great neighborhood there.

The only things that are better off unsaid are Detroit Whitey stories.

Spill please.

Thanks

The unsaid stories are the ones I am looking to print. I have one unsaid one about Judy that I should probably leave unsaid that doesnt make me look too good. I'll probably air it.
