Need steady rest, ?

" ... almost certainly intends to work on other people's cues and presumably charge money for that service. " seems like a very large assumption on your part. I certainly did not get that impression TW. Maybe you have developed mind reading skill, although I sincerely doubt that

No, not able to read minds yet - though I do have a fairly good sense of when I'm bumping into a dyed-in-the-wool assh*le.... Dave.

To address your taunt, the original poster has since edited his post, but fortunately his opener was forever preserved through the magic of the internet. He wrote:
I have a full size Shopfox lathe, and want to start replacing tips and ferrels Looking for a Oneway or similar steady rest unless there is a better way !

Pretty easy to read commercial intent into that statement, especially since he somehow failed to include the word "my" - as in "... start replacing MY tips and ferrels [sic]". I'd say the original phrase made it pretty easy for one to interpret as I did.

TW, I too have built tools, including my first metal lathe, from aluminum castings I poured, using patterns I made by hand .... whoopdie-doo for me too. The OP seemingly wants to tweak his wood lathe and who are you, one who admits above to ingeneous use of what-is-at-hand, to tell him otherwise ? (I know my own anwser to that, you are nobody to tell him).

You're absolutely right, Dave, I am no one to "tell him otherwise". Which is why I didn't. I pointed out that other, knowledgeable cuemakers had suggested better ways to go about it. Then I complimented him on being smarter than all them other guys. And finally I expressed confusion as to why he had posted asking for suggestions of better ways [if he was going to only dismiss their suggestions]. <implied

In all of that I am unable to find anywhere I tried to "tell him otherwise" [regarding his desire to tweak his lathe]. Can you help me find where I wrote anything like that? Or is it perhaps YOU who is trying to be a mind reader now?

And you have no clue as to what I considered Thomas. As I said, you aint no mind reader (OK, maybe you have some understanding of you own ... maybe).

Well, addressing what you may or may not have considered - in the context of a written discussion - is typically assumed to be constrained to what was offered in the previous written response. No one presumes to know everything another has considered in his own mind. To rebut with, "What you haven't considered..." is an accepted convention in written dialog that generally means "what you failed to point out in your response..." If the respondent has considered the unspoken point then he will generally reply by saying something like, "Yeah, I thought of that, but..." and so on.

Only a nitpicking assh*le looking for a scrap would seize on a literal interpretation and then go on and on about mind reading and similar drivel. Since you may not be a nitpicking assh*le, I'll embrace the assumption that you misunderstood my meaning or were unfamiliar with common written convention regarding the word "considered".

BTW, I do much of my own work ... way cheaper, faster, and more satisfying than risk some cuemaker hold my shaft

Dave

Ah yes, a big finish through implied sexual reference to your penis. How absolutely original and clever.

TW

As I said before I am very sorry I started this thread. I am a 68 year old retired guy that happens to own a wood lathe and wanted to use it to put tips and maybe a furrel on my own cues. I have never done nor do I ever intend to repair anyone's cue other than my own.

ron3 I have three wood lathes that I use for many cue jobs. Right now I am finishing up a conversion of a house cue and it has turned out great. If I have time tomorrow I will get back to you with pics of my steady rest and some light modifications I have made to help the wrong equipment to do an good job.

Dave and Thomas, let's ease up on the hostility here. I don't want to have to send someone away on a vacation so close to the holidays.

I'm actually stunned that someone of your status as a senior cuemaker, would utter such stuff! I think posted and PM'ed apologies to DaveK and to Ron3, the Original Poster, would be not only expected, but demanded by the powers that be. Others have gotten a vacation for a lot less than this. Shame on you Mr Thomas Wayne. I would even go so far as to suggest a ban on you or any of your cues gaining entry to the Cuemaker/Cue of the Year contest for this year for your very uncalled for behavior. JMHO. Being a great cuemaker doesn't entitle you to being such a rude and crude, condescending person.
Dave

As I always say: Before I install my pin, I always slather the annulus with epoxy so that I can get the encapsulation interface structure between the wall of the hole and the stud contour.

I suggest you guys try using some thin slow cure here as it acts like a lubricant and lessons the resistance during the act. You don't need to push this hard ya know. For what?

We all do better when we post our opinions and play nice together in the sand box! They they teach that in kindergarten.

Dear Santa,
All I want for Christmas is a cover for my sandbox, need to keep the cats from pooping in the sand.

Well it doesn't get any more biased than to carefully edit a post removing any relevant comment I was responding to - thereby eliminating all context. You don't by any chance work for Fox News, do you? Regardless, by that prejudicial action alone you invalidate whatever you might have to say about it. Good thing you're not one of the "powers that be" I guess.

As for "demanding" anything, let me just suggest that you demand in one hand and shit in the other. Be sure to let me know which hand fills up first.

What did I edit? Think you need new glasses or something. ...give it a rest please.

Are you kidding? You removed every statement that I was responding to, quoting ONLY what I wrote, while leaving out all the actual sections I quoted from the other guy's post.

I love when guys like you make a personal attack and then immediately follow up with "give it a rest". You post some personal insults, follow that with a demand [lol] for an apology, and now you're complaining when I respond? f you want me to "give it a rest" then just don't engage me. That concept is so simple I'm always surprised when I stumble across someone who can't grasp it.

Ummm, that's the way the "Quote" button works here Thomas. Most people don't go to the trouble of nesting quotes manually, and often they screw up when they do. Maybe if you ask Mike nicely he would turn that feature on (like at Jimmys place, that forum supports nested quotes). Having said that the feature only goes so many levels deep and since there is more in each quote the individual posts get quite long ... then there are the bozos who quote posts with a bunch of pictures ... and then they get quoted.

Merry Christmas.

Dave <-- thinks people can read what is posted and also know how to use scroll bars, scroll wheels, etc.

Go back and reread....think you got your daves mixed up....

Reminds me of a Mac Davis Song:

Oh Lord it's hard to be humble
When you're perfect in every way.
I can't wait to look in the mirror
Cause I get better looking each day
To know me is to love me
I must be a hell of a man.
O Lord it's hard to be humble
But I'm doing the best that I can.

I thought my request to tone it down was pretty simple to understand. Apparently not.

Your lathe will take a few hundred dollars to turn into a good tip and ferrule lathe. But that is still less than most simple cue lathes. One of the first things we need to know is how large the spindle is that is coming out the Left/back of your headstock spindle and the size of the thread on the front.

The Delta cross-slide that that someone posted would be a good buy. It would cost you about $300 to put something new on it to cut tips and ferrules. A chuck for the headstock should run around $100. A rear steady rest and dovetail piece would run you around $125 to $150. Concaved live center about $45 and lathe pins to match your shafts $12 each. A set of shaft collets $9 and some boring out of your headstock spindle, if possible and you would have a tip and ferrule lathe.

Does your headstock slide up and down the bed of the lathe? If so there may be an easier way to do your steady rest. I have helped modify hundreds of lathes through the years and yours looks like it may be possible to do the above things to. That is actually how I got into the cue lathe business was modifying a wood lathe for cue repair.

Thank you,

When I get old and cantankerous I am going to

write in a big font and criticize what everyone says until then I will try to be helpful share my knowledge .....how ever little that is.........

I see Thomas has been banned.
I am not happy to see him banned, but the tone of this and other threads were asking for it. I for one would like to see Thomas keep posting on here.
I would like to share some facts with the forum:

Thomas has helped me behind the sceens on occasion through the years. He has been fairly open with sharing information. He has nothing to gain by being on this forum. He already sells all the cues he makes. We have a lot to gain by him being on this forum. Yes he can be over the top with some comments, but as Proverbs says, "Where there is no fuel the fire goes out."

I suggest that we all put the egos aside, and not take the bait to fight with him when he posts something that might rub you the wrong way. Thomas was not the youngest living member inducted into the International Cue Makers Hall of Fame for nothing. He is artistically far above everyone of us when it comes to inlay work. He is one of the best cuemakers in the world period. Yes he knows those facts also and can come across a little brash at times. But if we just let it slide and let him share useful information with us, even though sometimes done with too much sarcasm, instead of feeling the need to straighten him out about his attitude we could all learn something. And I bet that you would see the sarcasm decrease and we could all get along.

That would be nice Chris but proverbs also say "a leopard never changes his spots"

(maybe it wasn't really a proverb and maybe that is not really what it said.......... but it fits the situation)....LOL

TW has just been a nasty person on this forum and we would be better off with out his kind. He prevents people from sharing for fear of being attacked and belittled by him....

It just isn't supposed to be the attitude that this forum presents.....

I will keep posting in my small font so people won't think I am yelling....

LOL
