Best Tips For Less

Some of you know me, many don't. I am retired and well off. Not in the big boy bracket but I eat well.

My cue making partner from years back Richie was kind enough to drive from Fort Lauderdale to Port Saint Lucie every day this past week to build a big wooden entertainment center.

Cue making to me started with Rich and was never as much fun as when we shared a space with another wannabe cue maker out of Lake Worth (wonder if he ever did anything further didn't even have a taper bar) as we all had the same sense of humor and cracked each other up all day.

Anyway, Rich is not poor but still younger with Fiance and 2 children so its don't quit your day job.

Hate to have a void type feeling making Cues. Do I rest up the equipment in Fort Lauderdale and drive there and back a few days a week?

I know, very wordy, should have been a blog but WWYD?

Thanks

If you feel there is a void in your life, and you know a way to resolve the issue, then do what makes you feel best. It doesn't matter what you have where you are if what you really enjoy is somewhere else.

Eventually (probably sooner than later) you will have enuff equipment to split some of it up. If you feel that strong about having your old partner involved with you, leave some at home and some at his place. That way if either of you don't feel like the drive, you can still keep yourselves occupied with what you have at hand. You won't feel pressured to make the drive but have something to tinker with if you get bored.

You could coordinate the work together so you get the same amount done.

Hi Tom,

Thats over a one and a half hour drive? Those will need to be some expensive cues to pay for all of that gas and time not spent on cue making but getting there. I have a hard enough time walking 50 feet to my garage shop on some days when I have to push the motivation factor. 3 hours of driving to make cues would blow me out of the game for sure.

Rent a truck with a hydraulic lift gate get your stuff and make one trip.

One thing I have learned and witnessed in life is that eventually all partnerships fail. Cut up the gear and make a clean break as friends. IN cue making or any other business you are always better off being a free agent.

I'm a free agent. I build cues by myself. I find myself talking to the cat. I write notes to myself.

Sounds like you miss your friend, who is now engaged and has a busy life to fulfill with work and family, more than you miss making cues. Find a new friend that has more time if that is what fills the void since making cues does not in itself fill the void. Making cues just so you can go see someone seems like an excuse to see someone, not a reason to make cues.

I tend to agree with scdiveteam on this one. You are probably at two different points in your lives. Do your own thing

It sounds like your old friend will be too busy in his future to have much time to spend with you. He will need to focus on his family in most of his spare time as he already has a full time job. I would say that you need to set the shop up at your place and maybe look around for an apprentice to help you out and develop a new friendship. My son does not like to work alone much either. I do not know his future bride, but I was with my young bride for 26 years before she passed away and another for 4 years now. And I know at times they felt three was a crowd. You need to find out what Rich wants and what his future bride wants. And what she wants is probably the real key to making your decision. Also you have to consider how much time you want to spend building cues. If it is only a few hours per week something with Rich may work out at either location. But if it is very many hours per week it will not be practical with much driving time.

Hey Tom.

If the driving is the hardest part of building your cues, your well on your way. I drive fours a day about once a week to see someone you know well. I would drive there two or three days a week if I could the time off of work. But before I made that deal and went out and bought a $30000 car for the gas mileage, I made a list of pros and cons. Obviously the drive was the lesser of the two evils.

Good luck.

You guys are a very smart bunch. I would say I have Peter Pan syndrome and see by the posts everyone recognises it.

Your input is very well accepted and appreciated.

I have a friend from High School on the other coast of Florida. Him and I used to be competitive chasing girls. When he visits we still chase and problem is the girls are about the same age.

The young people in here might not get it. You can't go back so you better give all the good things all you got everyday, enjoy and move on.

Thanks:bow-down:

Lol. 30 feet for me but it still looks too far sometimes :o

And lol. Just lol. Especially the notes

TomHay I know exactly what you mean. Over the years I have worked alone a lot, but also have an 'apprentice' who comes and goes as the circumstances allow.

When I say apprentice, he's been with me nearly 15 years on-off. It's not like a job, we are actually growing old together. :D

On your own you get buried in your own little world. You can get great things done alone. Nobody to disturb your train of thought.

But often, it becomes really hard when the work stacks up and you sometimes cannot see an end to it all. Very stressful, and as whammo57 can vouch, mild insanity creeps up on you :D

Having someone in the workshop lightens the load considerably and the banter can make days fly by.

For me, a combination of solitude and company works best. I need to be alone sometimes, but without doubt the most enjoyable days are when we work together, having a laugh and overcoming the multitude of problems those pesky customers make us face.

Sounds to me like you enjoy the company more than anything else, so hang on to it while you can. But brace yourself for what appears to be an inevitable 'flying solo' mission.

Strange this thread stayed up this long and I appreciate the input. Might as well get wordy.

When I was a pup I couldn't play pool with my friends. Tried everything, spotted them 20 to 25 in straight pool, no fun for either. I had to wait for road players.

When time came my friends got jobs at "The Mill". That would be one of the factories. I chose to be an Aluminum Siding salesman knocking on doors in the day, pitching deals at night. I would see friends occasionaly at bars. They bugged me about getting a real job. I was driving a brand new car, paid for, they were driving 5 - 10 year old cars trying to make enough to make payments.

Florida happened. I did a few things, did well but not enough for me. Went back into sales, Urethane Foam Roofing. I made 7% commision and my usual sale was 500K to 2 Million. No one was with me on the estimates and sales. I needed Glasses as time went by. I got them and passed by a pool hall wondering if I could shoot pool with glasses, had not shot in 17 years. The game was 9 Ball. People were jumping over balls this was before jump cues were banned later to be brought back again.

I had fun for a week. Everyone was saying "wait till Richie gets back in town". Day finaly came. I had been expecting someone like "White Cannonball" and in comes this kid. He had a backer his same age. He cleaned my clock the first night but we played for about a month straight. We both have versions of the end of month, both could be right but his backer started giving me bouncing checks. Out of this I made a lot of aquaintances and one fiend, Richie.

I had a cue I brought back from upstate NY. I wanted it refinished and another shaft made. Richie told me of one guy who could probably do it. We drove to the guys house in Hollywood where I met a young Dennis Searing. The guy was as down to earth as Richie, shot A Class Pool and turned some wood I had never seen before. I thought I gotta learn about this.

In the late 1990's I owned my place outright (Townhouse) and was worth about 1.5 million. My dad passed away and I went in to run his business. During this time a Public company opened up and every day they came buy to try to get me to develop a 4 component machine. I said no and finaly one of the people said to the other "told you we were wasting our time, he CAN'T do it. Naturaly being stupid I went for it leaveing my Secratary manager in charge. Not that long after I found out everybody and there brother was stealing from me. I signed a power of attorney to an on line management company. Next thing you know I was broke and owed 250K.

Spent a year in depression, pulled myself up and started a company on the WWW. I had to move to Jacksonville as it was growing and I needed a couple of things, one being closer to State line for shipping.

I spent 10 years building a multi million dollar a year company and very much as all before all but the lone ranger.

Yes, LOL, much has been skipped over. Just wanted to point out I know how to work alone, spent most of my life working alone. I am retired now, took a residual lifetime buy out rather than lump sum.

Now this may be a shocker. I have hundreds, maybe thousands of aquantances in over 60 years of life. I however have around 8 friends. How do I judge a friend? I am falling off a cliff, everyone I have ever met has a hold of my arm. As I fall farther few have hold of my arm. I am going over no matter what. The people that will go down to the rocky part hundreds of feet down rather than let go, they are my friends.

Okay, LOL, you can wake up now, story is over.

If you have 8 friends like that then you are truly a blessed man.

Don't get too close to cliffs!!! Me....I'll have to settle for anyone who hasn't asked to borrow money or has actually paid me back....

I really enjoyed reading your story BTW and congratulations for making it. I know about having people steal from you. I allowed my employers to use some images I took to promote their business. Upon leaving, I asked the images on the website be removed and they refuse. I hadn't registered the images prior to allowing their use, so the only thing I can do now is try and obtain a cease and desist letter from a judge. It is pretty sad when a million dollar company has to steal, but that is the kind of people I used to work for....

And I still work for. Don't feel bad, I had to sign an agreement that any idea I come up with is the property of the company. OK
