Newman Calls it Quits

Paul Newman won his first Oscar playing "Fast Eddie" in "The Color of Money," and he is calling it quits in acting: "I'm not able to work anymore as an actor at the level I would want to," Newman, 82, told ABC's "Good Morning America" on Thursday. "You start to lose your memory, your confidence, your invention. So that's pretty much a closed book for me."

Newman was brilliant in "The Hustler," and who can forget "Coolhand Luke," which are just a few of many of his great movies during his career.

In recent times, he is very much involved with his philanthropic venture of spaghetti sauces, salad dressings, cookies, popcorn, and other food items, the proceeds of which all go to charity.

Several years ago, I was doing a live phone feed for ABC. They were conducting an interview with Paul Newman for an upcoming TV show, and me, I was just the lowly transcriptionist recording it, to be transcribed immediately for the producers on a same-day turnaround. Keith was sitting close by listening to the interview, and it was then that he told me how Paul Newman did not attend the Academy Awards for TCOM. Interestingly, Newman backed Keith in a pool game during this era, which is an interesting story in itself.

Looks like a remake of "The Hustler" and/or "The Color of Money" will never happen, unless Tom Cruise becomes a mentor for a new up-and-coming pool player and takes him on the road. :D

Of course, a pool movie would help give pool a boost in the States, but I can't see it being about hustling in this day and age since road players are darn near extinct; a rare breed, if you will. What do you think would be a good plot for a pool movie in the year 2007? Should it be about the tournament soldier traveling around the world? I think a movie about Alex Pagulayan's life, as an example, would be an excellent movie, his childhood all the way up to being a world pool champion.

Here's Fast Eddie, played by Paul Newman, in "The Color of Money." He will be missed! :(

Paul Newman is still THE MAN!

Unfortunately, I doubt I will grow old as gracefully. What a great example for all of us!

I awalys liked his work, the food chairty thing etc, but what I dont like is his anti-gun values yet he uses them in movies in Viloent circumstances and makes big $$ doing so, I just found this out a few years ago, I was in South Africa and went to the movies-First time in 5 years about 4-5 years ago when I found this out-I was disappointed, but that stuff aside he was brilliant in hustler, cool hand luke, and ok in COM-keith was the best charicter in that movie-and i'm not saying that because of JAM, i said that 20 years ago-way before i knew whi JAM was/is, serious question though (what did they tell him "be your self ";) ) ?" tom cruise sucked,

i saw an interview with him after he did the voice over in CARs the anamiated flick and he said he had one movie left in him, and was very adament about that, I think he is sick wirth something, because he was very serious about a "final appearance" kinda rol and now he is bowing out, i hope I'm wrong but I fear the worst-that he is sick and uncapable, we all are going to be there at some point, Eddie Felson was great.

They are classics just as Paul Newman.
IMO, It would be very difficult to do a Part 111. Things have changed so much and there is not nearly the color to draw from as in the old days.

This will probably sound odd, but Newman was the original Fast Eddie and after time I could never imagine anyone else play that role, nor did I want to. Tom Cruise role of Vincent again, IMO, was a bit of a joke. I often wish I hadn't read the book before I saw the movie. The book I enjoyed where as the movie irritated me.

I truly wish they would do something about true life figures, such as, Kieth, Matlock, Walden, Incordona, Buddy, and maybe the most intresting of all, Mike Massey. {Few really know the HELL Mike went through and the battles he has won}

Hollywood only sells sensationalism though and not many writers would find the everyday life of a "Gunslinger" very intresting and probably rightfuly so. It would be to us in the pool world, but as you suggest, it is a small world with a small audience. I wish I were a writer.

Even though, Newman to me, will always be three people, Fast Eddie, Butch Cassidy, and Henry Gorndorff.

This is a great post JAM and i'd like to say that Paul Newman has been one of my favorite actors of all time. I didn't realize he was 82 years old and I can't believe how fast time is passing by!

Keith was given a script, but he did have a few ad-libs, which were left in the film. :D

I did not know about Newman's gun stance. Here he is in Butch and the Sundance Kid with both guns a blasting!

That is one movie that I have not seen, and I was unaware about this being his final flick. He had a 50-year-long career in film making. I'm going to have to rent that one to hear Paul Newman's voice work! :p

Scared the hell outta me to see him driving a race car at 75!

He is the Man!

That is quite incredible. Redskins coach Gibbs went the same route.

Newman discovered a love of motor sports while filming 'Winning' in 1969. By 1972, he had begun to race professionally, despite being colorblind.

He's been one of my favorites, too! I had forgotten about him in "The Sting." He and Robert Redford co-starred in several films together.

I was thinking the same thing, wondering what the topic of a good pool movie should be. They have had the PoolRoom Junkies and others that didn't seem to catch on. Kid Delicious' movie is still in the making, last I heard.

Man, he was GREAT as Fast Eddie. I have seen The Hustler a kazillion times, but I still enjoy it. The pool rooms were so realistic, and there's something about seeing Willie Mosconi racking the balls and then it being black-and-white that really made it cool. :)

I think if someone makes a movie based on a true story that Jeanette Lee would be a good draw. She is the most-well known in the pool world and both men and women would go see it.

If fiction I still think it should be about the rise to the top for a female player. You could have a male co-star that would be her banker, lover, coach, or the villain. You could have her looking for her long lost father that left her and her mother to go on the road when she was very young. She could go from state to state hustling pool looking for him.

I think Jam is right that male road players are just about a thing of the past, but females are not. Johnnyt

Well, here's something that I never noticed about "The Color of Money," and I have probably watched this movie more than any other in my lifetime.

I didn't know Cruise played left-handed! I never picked up on that before! It definitely makes for a better picture, though! :o

My pleasure. I know he's still alive, but somehow him announcing that he's not going to act anymore feels like I'm experiencing a loss; a death, if you will. Newman is still THE MAN, you're right! :)

Actually, I buy some of his food items. In particular, his salad dressings are EXCELLENT. The Original salad dressing is great to grill vegetables with, and his new Lite Italian salad dressing (with a bit of lemon) makes eating a salad a real treat. It is delicious! :D

A short time after COM was released, Paul was here in St.petersburg with his Trans-Am race team for the Gran-prix, I had a pit pass, but could not get near him to get an autograph. of course I wanted to ask him if he wanted to go play some. :o

I put in a pre-order for the Hustler 2-disc set from Amazon, it has Paul doing some comments on the movie.:)

You know, a friend of mine bought the DVDs of "The Hustler," and it had some great snippets and video clips at the beginning about the making of the movie.

Mike Massey is on there displaying some of the shots executed in the movie. There are some interviews with other movie folks affilliated with this flick, too. And I think there's another pool folk who speaks at the beginning, but I can't remember who it was. I found those short video clips extremely interesting. You will enjoy it for sure! :)

JAM, i'm 100% positive about this, he was on Jay Leno or something plugging cars and talking about his future, and clearly stated that he wasnt his old self but did have only one movie in him, taking what he said at face value and looking the way he did when I saw that 8months or a year ago, it was believable, he didnt look well, I certainly hope he dosent have a disease and is just old and comfortable, gun thing aside who cares, paul newman is one of the ledgends period

You are right, Fatboy. He did make this announcement. I just caught wind of it today, which is why I made the thread. It seems like such a loss to me, even though he's still alive.

Here's an interesting Newman factoid: He earned nine Academy Award acting nominations but his only win was for best actor in The Color of Money in 1987 as the same pool shark he had played when he was nominated in 1962 for The Hustler.

Heck, at 82 years old, he's still my horse if he never wins another race. What a shooter, what a guy! :)
