Nick is the best all-around player in US History, narrowly edging Sigel, Lassiter and SVB. Nick has won a world title in each of 9-ball, straight pool, banks, 8-ball and 1-pocket. He is also a perfect gentleman that brings positive attention to our sport.

Happy birthday Nick.
A real sweetheart. Met him in the early 90s, and he was gracious when I abruptly left our conversation to go talk to Eddie Taylor. I once made it a point to play on the same Purdue student union tables he practiced on, since I remembered watching him on the (Wide World of Sports?) early 60s Johnson City TV broadcasts.

Okay, I just thought I've throw in my 2 cents about Nick Varner. If I'm not mistaken, he once went to the Philppines and beat Efren in some head to head match. When Efren was asked why he couldn't beat Nick, he said, "He never missed." LOL
Nick beat Efren 60-47. He said he stuck around a couple of days to see if Efren wanted to play again but apparently he didn't!

Nicky’s favorite story from the family pool hall.
Cornbread Red came down from Detroit and robbed a guy called Cornflakes at 9-ball.
Couple months later, Red came back for some more of that action.
One of the customers said “Here comes that cereal killer.”
Nick always cracks up when he tells that one.

I first met Nick in 1981 when I started to play. He did an exhibition at The U and played my friend Bert. Bert was easily the best player in our room and Nick made minced meat out of him. He was running balls and wanted to continue his run but the audience wanted to see trick shots. Lol.

Anyway, Nick had just written a book so I bought it and he signed it. I have met him several times since then and he remembers his time at Miami fondly. Just a great guy. It's funny, I knew nothing about professional pool back then, but knew Sigel was a great player since he played in my local room. I asked Varner if he knew Mike and his look was comical. He said he just beat him in most recent World Straight pool tourny. That summer, I was playing in our room and Sigel was practicing. Just running ball after ball. Some girl walked by and bumped him and he missed. He stopped and unscrewed his cue and said "I guess I am ready". He goes to New York and wins.

Geez I hope he doesn't remember his encounter with me.

I wonder if anyone out there saw this? Jay Leno set up Nick Varner with a bet, where Nick had to beat a woman at pool. Nick accepted the bet, and Jay opened the curtain to reveal Allison Fisher, and a 12 foot snooker table. Nick lost, and was not happy about it.

Snooker is not pool. I'd say he was hoaxed.
