Well, thats almost what came out of my mouth today! :) As some of you might know I am a plumbing contractor, and I had a service call today for a new customer. As I was following him down the basement stairs I noticed a table covered in a back room.....right away I scoped out the dead give away white GCI leg/foot. I said to Mr Pearson...."not many people have a Gold Crown I in their basement these days"....he looked at me puzzled, and said...."even fewer folks KNOW what a GCI is!" we laughed, and started chatting about pool. He looked to me to be about 65 and said he was from New York and played mostly at Ames and a few other places in the 60's......he went by the name Long Island Whitey.....and had some great stories about all the old timers.....wait it gets better...

I finished my work and he asked if I want to see his playing cue....I said uhh....YEA! ....he smirks and said....now we'll see what you know!:) He open the case and right away I say.....thats a SWEET Hoppe conversion...then he hands it to me and asked if I"m from New York?...I said no, why? he said look at the brass joint....I asked why puzzled...he said "have you ever held a Bushka?"

Now, I have heard a million Bushka stories, and I am NOT an expert, but I believed him right away. He purchased the Hoppe for $19, and spent $225 for the conversion with 3 shafts by none other then Mr Balabushka! He talked with him many times and said George used to make the rounds to the pool rooms collecting up cues for repairs, and taking custom orders....thats when he gave him the cue t convert.

So, I'm scheduled to go back for some more work in a week or so, and I plan to get some pics!......and mention AGAIN how much I would like to talk with him about just maybe ohhhhh buying that old cue he no longer uses!

I'll keep you all up to date...

I guess sales / service is a numbers game, right? I wonder how many homes you have to run a service call in before someone hands you their Balabushka?

Dave

That's very cool. I once walked into a customer's downstairs to find a Brunswick Balke Collender table that was ancient. It was in fantastic shape. They had boxes stacked all over it. The guy told me it was his grandfather's.

Wow...

You're gonna get that stick. The only way you're not gonna get that stick is if he has a son that would truly appreciate it, and what are the odds of that?

Fate works in mysterious ways, doesn't it?

OK, here's the deal.... you can cut me in 50/50 partners now or I can call him up and tell him what it's worth:thumbup: Man, it's like I'm from Allentown, but I'm not! hahahaha JUSSSSSSSSSSSST KIDDING!!! ;) I hope you get the cue!! GO GET'M!

I guess he could always sell you the cue at a great price, either that or pay you the $7,500 for fixing his toilet. ;)

thats cold low! :)....but all things considered, most people who would ride with me for a week and see the stuff we get into would be happy to pay us our very "reasonable" rates! :)

funny thing is back in the day when I was broke.... I would spend my last dime on a Black Boar,or a Phillipe etc....today I"m playing my best pool with a Schon STL1 with a 314-2.

you never know!

You plumbers get all the good $hit

If you get the Balabushka I'll trade you a plumbers strap, a gold plated plunger, and a couple of plug valves for it.

Yeah, it seems as if this guy was pretty active back in the day. That doesn't just go away. I'm sure he knows what that cue is worth, or damn close to it.

very very cool story though

Hi Fred, yes, it had the "Willie Hoppe" signature on it......like the Predator commemorative series.....actually it looked a lot like those, but the points were real short IMO....almost like the WICO blanks....

Oh I'm not saying he won't pay for it... I'm saying that he's only going to 'give' it to someone who can respect it for what it is. And there's not many of those.

Great story. I hope it gets better.

Do a good plumbing job for him and who knows, you might become an owner of a Balabuska. Even so, it has to be great just talking to someone who lived and breathed the same air as George Balabushka and Ames.

Savor the journey and don't rush.
