No Filipinos at the Open?

I'm not sure what if anything is going on. In the Asian Olympics there will be no billiards this year. I have been waiting for two years now to go to a world class tournament in Manila but that has also stopped. I sure hope this changes.

Cuedoctor..........unless I am mistaken, Reyes won it in 1994 and Pagulayan in 2005. I have nothing against any of the players signed up to play this year but I have never seen Efren play in person so that is why I was wanting him to be there. Also I think as of this past Monday only about 150'ish have signed up. Between the four B's....Bonus Ball and Barry Behrman......this open is a little less than it usually is. Still the greatest event in pool.

Alex is listed as from canada ..check it out under usopen past winners.... http://www.usopen9ballchampionships.com/history.php
Efren is a great player and a fine gentlemen.....yes...the open is not what it use to be

I posted this on the U.S. Open forum and got no responses so I thought I would try it here. It appears to me that none of the Filipino players are participating at the Open next week. Also there are only about 160 players signed up. Did I miss something or looking in the wrong place? Would love to go up and watch Efren and a few of those guys but not the most star-studded field this year.

Lee Van Corteza and Jose Parica were listed as of October 7, 2013.

Of course, less people have been showing up.

What do you expect when it's run by someone like Barry? I'm not a betting man, but if I were, I'd bet there's at least one controversy this year regarding the payouts.

The only reason people are even showing up these days to play is because of name alone. If it were any other tournament that had this many payout issues over the years, nobody would be playing.

It is a shame that Orcollo and Biado haven't signed up. I can understand why if they don't think they'll be paid, but it would be nice to have them there. Definitely two of the best players in the world.

I think the field is already one of the toughest there is. Whats all this fuss about phillipino's coming or not coming...only one of them in the history of the open has ever won it! Sure barry has had his problems but there all paid and what tournament besides the derby hasn't had an issue lately. Right now he's looking alot better than bonus ball but those involved have to try and get what there owe'd. The biggest problem is that the last 5 years the fan's haven't supported the open...just the usual faces every year so there's no ticket gate money. Barry always thinks people are going to come but they don't and its sad. There's gotta be thousands of apa players within a few hours drive of the open but if you mention to them there world class player's right in there own back yard they couldn't give two shits and spend a little money and see real pool. Everybody talks about the open but not many really supported it over the years. More people show up for friday night HS football here than the open. Just my two cents...been going for 15 years straight and see the same fans all the time...no new faces. Go EARL!

Earl is gonna be tough to beat this year the way he's been shooting for sure! We need to get all the AZers to meet up while we're there, I'll be there every night!

Dan, from a very good source, one of the lower finishing Chinese players from last year has not been paid YET! Some of these guys who finished low ($1000-1,500) didn't worry about getting their check and just left the next day. They had a large contingent from Taiwan last year, wonder how many will be back this year. My guess - ZERO!

Jay, any news from Dennis or Carlo if he will be participating this year's open?

Make the ride - it will be worth the trip!

The Earl will be there!

Wouldn't it be something if he did it again?

As the cue doctor said " go Earl "!

Eveni if Efren doesn't have a Chinaman's chance of winning the US 9 Ball Open this year, he still attracts fans, his presence alone makes the trip worthwhile if you'tr planning to go. You add Dennis Orcullo, Dennis Biado, Busti, Ronnie Alcano, and the stone cold killers from China and Taiwan from the absent list, it somewhat dampens the event a bit.

It's still a great and prestigious event though, don't get me wrong...

I disagree with nearly everything you said.
1. Number one The Phillipinos are all great players , they don't whine and they show up in stroke.
2. You think all the problems are paid.
That's not what almost everyone I talk to believes.
3.Maybe the reason fans haven't been supportive is all the negative publicity about not paying the players Just the usual faces That may be another attitude adjustment needed.
4. Barry always thinks people are coming but they don't , it's sad
No, it's goofy to keep doing the same thing, and expecting different results.
5.I agree with Go Earl, but I hope he will duct tape his mouth and keep from
going down the pity path.
He is still a great player and may have been the best ever but most people will sadly only remember the blow ups.
I think if he changed right now and just played the best he can most people would overlook the negative because he was, such a great player.
I tried to word this as my opinion vs your opinion, I hope that's how it came out.

Earl needs to stay the way he is.

And players got paid. Stop listening to and spreading rumors.

Funny how 4 players didn't get paid right away, then people on AZBilliards blew that number up to a dozen.

Why people keep saying this, but can not name any names of players that didn't get paid. :scratchhead:

There will be some great matches at the Open this year. I agree i'll miss seeing Efren if he doesn't play this year especially since he played so well last year. Efren's match against Darren Appleton last year was one of the best i've seen at the Open in a long time, but there will be plenty of quality matches to see. I've been to the Open for 20 straight years and i've always enjoyed going even the year the Hurricane hit on Thursday during the tournament. My friend and I sat in our hotel room drinking a beer without power watching the wind blow out the window. The tournament cranked back up and we still had a good time.

Its not goofy to go and support the sport you love no matter what barry does the players need to see fans supporting them....I don't go there to see barry. All these negative people have nothing better to do....Name the unpaid players please! And all the hype BB had with million dollar backers and they didn't pay there players. Amyone here think barry made a ton of money on these opens and just pockets the money and says screw the players. He aims too high is his problem. The phillipinos are great players but I hear pool is having problems there also

That's not an excuse for being bad at your job.

Well...at least he is doing something right. It's the longest running professional tournament in the USA.

When I used to play in it, it was always a great tournament. Of course it wasn't so big then.

Maybe that is the problem...it's too big with too many players.

No, I think cuedoctor has it absolutely right. Barry promises high payouts that can't be done to bring players in.

Well....depending on what the criteria is to be called a "professional tournament". FTR, the Texas Open is the longest running pool tournament in the USA.

Just because you are in the dark doesn't mean there is no light.
