I often hear the opinion that LD shafts are
just corporate gimmicks. Not so. They are
an attempt to improve the equipment we use
in our chosen sport.

Are steel joints gimmicks? How about ivory
joints? What about leather wraps, another
gimmick? Linen wraps? No wraps?

What about all the different tips that are
available? Are they all gimmicks?

If SVB's use of a broom handle is the standard
then isn't all the stuff listed above (including LD
shafts) just another gimmick?

The point is that one man's gimmick is another man's
convenience or another man's necessity.

SVB can play with a broom handle if he
wants to. That idea is pretty gimmicky if you
ask me.

I'm gonna play with my cue. Thanks !!

You very astutely left out Kamui chalk and jump cues. :D

We certainly need another thread about the greatness of LD shafts TXStang :) The way some promote them one might infer that if you laid the shaft on the table And walked away, the balls would just roll themselves in the holes. :)

Lol..... I would buy two of them if they ran out on their own !!

No fan

Not a big fan of LD shafts Just sayin'

I'd be impressed if one just ran out the door !!!

LOL

back in the day, i heard a hot player on a hot streak exclaim, "this is my magic wand. when i wave it over the table the balls disappear."

i think if i remember correctly he was using a cheap meucci with a badly cracked ferrule. times have changed.

if you think equipment makes a difference in your game then you don't have much of a game..

the equipment requirements to play pool correctly are quite minimal.. flat surface( preferably slate) ringed with rubber covered in wool and a straightish 5 foot tapered pole (preferably maple)with a piece of leather on the end.. and 16 balls of equal weight all made of the same material..maybe a small piece of chalk

everything else is looks, preference, hype , gimmicks, or marketing

have a nice day

Also it's a gimmick when you make a bridge with your non-shooting hand.

Why?

Because I shoot one handed and using your hand as a bridge is not necessary when it can be holding a beer.

Ok, but I often wear a kamui beer hat. It leaves both hands free.
They are a little on the expensive side but well worth the money.

Hypothetically, if I could kick about 10%, and my long heavy cue with a soft tip can't cause much bounce when I try to jump with it....if I buy a jump cue and get hits like 90% now... Didn't equipment play a part in helping my game?

Sounds all well and good, but what do you play with? I'm sure not a house cue and sportcraft chalk.

Jump cues are a total gimmick.. you shoulda seen the first ones.. little 2 foot rods... jumped like nothing ever seen..

if it were about integrity of the game the rules would state one cue per player per match...

but its not about the game.. it's about money... the reality is (at least in the US) it's all about the contributions of the BCA.. and the rules are tailored to... how much money can we make off of these bangers.. keep em in the dark and feed them "innovations" to swell their cases and our wallets..

the hustler moved off the table and into the pro shop.. plain and simple

To each his own. Have I mentioned that I love my Josey with it's standard shaft? Love the Justis case too.

That said, one man's gimmick is another man's necessity.

I'll confess to liking gadgets too much. Good equipment just makes me feel better, so I work more at improving my game.

I can afford it, so I don't buy into the "you don't deserve a custom until you routinely run six packs" line of reasoning. Not all Ferrari owners are Formula one drivers, right?

So..guess I'm agreeing with the original post.

the weather is more important than the gear

hot and humid.. vs cold and dry... vs hot and dry.. vs cool and damp....

add how clean the balls are into that mix and all of a sudden squirt is a minor bit player in a huge AAA movie.

worry about things that matter.... like your stroke .. and daily practice...

the gear and the gimmicks will take care of themselves

I weighed a lot of ball sets. Never seen a set that were of "equal weight".
A "flat surface" is also pretty rare when you get right down to it.

I guess the "requirements" are really just a matter of opinion. Isn't that the point !

I think everyone here recognizes the importance of the fundamentals.

have a nice day
