Noise Pollution...breaking

Is it possible that the sound of me breaking 6,8,9, and 10-ball out on my screened patio every ten minutes or so for hours at a time IS louder than laws allow?

Anyone know how many decibels come from breaking a rack? I guess I could buy a meter to check...but I'm a little on the cheap side with things I really don't need.:grin-square: Johnnyt

based on this, I would guess it's somewhere between 70 and 85 decibels. Maybe 90 tops.

Looking up a few sample noise pollution laws, I saw several that said "over 80" and one or two that were stricter in the 55-60 range. They might or might not make an exception for continuous noise (like a lawnmower) vs. occasional sharp cracks. I'd say if you could legally work on your house and hammer nails without getting called on it, you're probably safe, but better check the local law to be sure ...

Yikes. I better check the local law for how many decibels I'm allowed. Thank you very much CreeDo. Johnnyt

Decibels are usually measured at the property line but you have to check the local laws. I doubt very seriously you violate the "daytime" noise levels allowed. The late night hours might be an issue but even that is probably more a matter of courtesy than law. Best I remember every three decibels is double the subjective sound so even though you may seem close to the limit a few decibels under is plenty safe.

Some local governments loan out decibel meters. You might check on that, quietly.

I have a RTA and can take a measurement tomorrow. The biggest problem I see is that most of those laws are written to be subjective. I used to fight this battle with the volume of car stereos and aftermarket lighting on vehicles. Unfortunately if the officer considered you a nuisance you where in the wrong regardless. One of those times that it really pays to be a nice guy and get along with all people involved, accept your neighbor, screw him.

It's not that I'm goody two shoes, I just couldn't stand for my nieghbor to be right. If I couldn't break anymore I'd have to break something...probably his jaw. Johnnyt

good thought

Breaking his jaw that is. With a bandage wrapped around his head he couldn't hear nearly as well!

Danged modern technology, they would probably just wire it now.

You might also want to check if the limits apply to all sound, or just amplified sound. I seriously doubt that one sharp sound every 5 or 10 minutes could be considered noise pollution, but some cities have some really crazy laws.

I've got a neighbor with a table in a screened enclosure a few houses down. I hear a break every now and then, but I can't fathom that being considered noise pollution, especially during the daytime hours.

Think about the morning hours when you're in a pool room with about 4 other people tops and the juke box is off. You're indoors with no background noise. The break isn't very loud at all. Take it outdoors and it shouldn't even be significant.

i wouldnt have this problem if i had a table at my house cuz ive always been told i break like a girl...but to follow that up i continue to get the cash when i gamble with ppl that tell me that so whatever...

Play rotation games by day and 14.1 after dark. You'll round out your skills and elevate the aggrevation you'll experience from your ***** neighbor.

Your problem is the signature of the sound. It's a sharp, cracking sound that is very distinctive & harsh in a quiet neighborhood setting. Couldn't you hang some cheap (sound absorbing) panels that can moved out of the way when you want sun to come in?

Johnny, I just thought about this, you said your pool table is in a screened patio, how does the table hold up to the environment? Like humidity, rain and etc would get to it right? Just curious

Plants

Around your room, inside outside, they buffer some of the sound of the balls.
Bamboo, climbers, a high fence, trees near the fence.

We play music so loud you would never hear the balls in our basement.
lol.
Good luck

Didn't you do that already, or was it his nose?
Or maybe you need to take up one pocket.
