So I've been bitten by the cue bug, and would like to be able to learn enough to become a "collector" or at least buy the right stuff. How did you experts get started? Where do you buy your gems? How do you know if you're looking at the real stuff or just a cheap copy? Any info would be appreciated.....I don't think you have to worry about the competition!!!

Buy what you like. Plain and simple. If you're taking advice from others on what to buy, then you're buying for the wrong reasons. If you see something you like, buy it. Just do some research to make sure you're not overpaying.
 
Buy what you like first and foremost. If you find a cue you like by an old master and want to see if it is the real deal, there are plenty of good guys on this site that can help.
 
Yup what you like

Value is always best. So, buy what you like. If you buy new from a builder you will be happiest. Next option is used. Unplayed is great also.
If you have a new cue basicly you have no secrets hidden about what you own.
You often get what you pay for and then some with used cues. Best avoid all that mess.

Thanks for your imput! You guys are the best, and glad you're willing to share information.

What I'm really trying for is finding out where YOU buy your cues. I'm not asking for specifics as in a seller's name, but where do you look for "deals" on some of the master works. Anyone with money can spend 16K on a Szam, but finding one under market seems to be the challenge.

How true.

Almost every time I have ever lost a cue auction (which is almost always, cause I don't have much to spend) it has been to somebody on AZ.

One thing to add to your post. I am very good at this myself, at least finding them, not buying them, that is a fantasy for the most part at the moment. The thing I have to add is the Buy It Now option. If you are bored, just keep refreshing the most recent buy it now pool cues. You would be amazed what you can find if you know what you are looking at and spring fast. These cues last minutes.

Just a few days ago a fairly valuable true Vintage cue sold for a Buy It Now of $75.00. The seller had no idea what they had. Also, look for cues that are simply listed incorrectly.....like the classic McDermott recently mislisted as a Schmelke.

There are indeed deal to be had.
