Now that's a close jump

Not a trick. I can jump from even closer. Many have seen me put a dollar bill between the balls then remove it...and clear it easily. Larry Nevel is excellent at it as well. Its simply a matter of throwing it like a dart & turning loose with your back hand...and having the correct equipment is a must too.
 
Someone else posted a video showing that when the ball is that close together, the object ball goes straight up, then deflects off the shaft to move forward. Impossible to see with the naked eye though, and who knows exactly what the angle is where it changes from "possible" to "impossible"(without the shaft assist)

I was just about to say this. It was one of those high-speed videos. If you shoot downwards, the ferrule & shaft will bend away from the cueball but it will vibrate back to hit the cueball. If the tip is 13-14mm and there's 1mm between the balls and you hit downwards, it's hard to imagine a path which cueball will take not hitting the cue/shaft again when airborne. Would be nice to see more of those high-speed videos of these shots.
 
YOu tell 'um! I believe there was a vid that showed the FOUL! posted once. Hope someone can dig it up?

Ned Morris, who usually gives jump lessons at the Stealth Cues booth at all the conventions can do this in his sleep. And so can lots of others from what i'm reading. Of course i can barely jump with one foot of space in between, let alone a toothpick. :(

I saw a guy at Q-masters billiards in Va. shoot jump shots that close, but he was only using a shaft and not a jump cue. He tried to get my friends and I to bet with him that he could do it, but we figured that if he wanted to bet then he must be able to do it so we passed. He did some shots for us anyway and it was the first time i'd ever seen anyone jump with just a shaft.

He told us that the shaft he was jumping with had been modified by Tony at Black Boar cues and it made a believer out of me. I'd never seen anyone jump a ball that close before.

The video on Youtube is amazing, but after what I saw at Q-masters I believe it's authentic.

Both of these are great jump shots that I have seen many times before. And I still enjoy watching them. The one thing you can't see in the first video that is evedent in Larry's video is he is only using the shaft. I tried thses a few times and the best I was able to do 1 successful jump after about 12 or so trys was about 3/4" (with a Varney). Still pretty good but unfortunately you can't use he shaft to jump in competition. Oh and it is hell on the cloth.

In this video, it is hard to tell whether or not the cue ball makes contact with the shaft, however, it looks to me like it could have. But the most interesting thing is, these balls were about 1/4-inch apart, and still the cue ball just barely cleared the top of the obstructing ball. If they had been closer together (as in mully's video), the cue ball would have never made it over.

I just measured a toothpick and it was .076". That means the gap in the first video would have been around 1/16-inch (.0625") because a toothpick could not fit between the two balls. That also means the cue ball had to go almost straight up. And if it goes straight up, how can it then go forward to clear the obstructing ball? The leading edge of the cue ball has to travel a lateral distance of at least 4-3/8" in order for the whole ball to completely clear the obstructing ball. Wouldn't the cue ball have to get a "kick" from the shaft in order to do that?

It seems to me that there really must be a foul involved when the balls are this close.

I don't think that's necessarily true - remember that the balls are round (spherical) so their sides aren't like parallel walls. They're only 1/16" apart at one point and as soon as the cue ball elevates the gap increases. I bet you can get a surprising angle on the CB without hitting the OB. The same geometry makes it much easier to jump over the edge of an OB than over its center.

That's a good point, Patrick, but I laid it out on paper, and even at the maximum allowable angle the cue ball would have to reach a minimum height of approximately 19" in order for it clear the obstructing ball by the same 1/16" gap it started with. I don't think players are actually jumping cue balls that high, do you?
