nylon vs. phenolic insert

I have primarily used phenolic rod for making inserts, however some people have suggested using nylon instead, just wondering what the advantages would be using nylon vs phenolic rod.

Stick with Phenolic

Nylon is a little too soft, so you would need a fine thread like Huebler's 5/16-18. The finer threads are prone to cross threading.

Also, nylon falls into that category of materials that are very difficult to glue well. You will most likely have many of them just turning out like there was no adhesive used when putting them in.

I have seen several nylon inserts that are cross threaded......... never on phenolic...

The other advantage to phenolic is it is not a thermoplast. This means when someone leaves it in their car on a summer day it will have less chances of swelling and damaging the cue.

I used to use phenolic. Have changed to Juma on my small pin cues. I think nylon is not the best stuff to use these days. For all the reasons above.

Plain nylon is all trouble.
But, not all nylon based rods are the same.
The really good one is expensive and really hard.
Too hard to tap in fact. I have to live thread it .
My late mentor Kerry Zeiler used it and I use it on my tribute cues to him.
I call it Zylarta.

Just plug up the 1/4 hole and re-drill/bore it after the plug has been epoxied.
It's such a waste of material to use rods imo and just drill that hole anyway.
