OB-1 Shaft without tip pad?

I don't like the feel of the hit I get from my OB-1 shaft and after having it cut down to 12.25mm and my Morri Quick tip installed it's still not what I'm after.

Have any of you removed the pad from beneath the tip? I know it could damage the ferrule but I'm not worried about that. I just want to know if it will make the feel of the hit more "crisp", for lack of a better word. I want less thud and more pop!

I also know that the construction of the shaft lends itself to more of a muffled feel... a thud.... and that's all the more reason to remove the pad so I can get the crisp POP feel that I want.

I want the shaft to hit with all the crisp POP of my new Starkey AND have the minimal deflection of the ob1. That's all I want. Just perfection. That's all.

Any experiences with the pad removed?

OB Cues

Jim,

I had a question about an OB-1 awhile back and went straight to the source, OB Cues. I talked to John there and he gave me straight no BS answers. I recommend you go to the source for your information.

Opinion only here based on what I know about the shaft construction but I think you are not going to get the sharp crisp sound by removing a pad. The pads are pretty hard themselves and thin too. You will get a little better sound removing the pad and replacing the ferule with a very hard one but you still won't get that shaft to make the noise I believe you are looking for and it won't play quite like an OB-1. The shaft effectively has sound dampening built into it. Again, my opinion stated here, I recommend calling OB Cues for the straight skinny.

You might consider using a different brand hard tip (not a Moori). I've shot with a lot of OB-1 shafts with different tips and the difference is really noticeable.

You can't have your cake and eat it too. The low deflection shafts are hollow. You can't get solid feedback from a foam filled hole. Decide which one you want - low deflection or great feedback. You won't get both. OB-1 isn't the magic pill. It's just another Predator, with a twist.

Jim, I wouldn't recommend removing the pad & installing a tip. The ferrule is quite thin and wouldn't survive without the pad. When you remove the pad there is a bit of a hole & its kind of filled with a balsa like material. They were trying to make it light as possible.
Send it to me if you'd like...I can change it to a premium ferrule & still keep it light. I can get the crisp hit you are looking for or I won't charge you.;) PM me.

Real Wood??

The OB-1 IS real wood! I don't know what kind, but I have dropped my cue, it banged off a table and then bounced a couple of times on the metal footrest of the table and not one single dent!!! This was not a fluke. It has happened before. I know......I need to be more careful, but I'm really amazed at how dent resistant it is. No solid wood shaft has ever done that. Saved me lots of $$$$$ in cue repair. Shoots great as well!! I must add........If you don't give an OB-1 at least 6 weeks of solid play, you will never know how great it can be.

Hey JimS,

I want the same thing, I think I might have the answer... I have a tried a harder tip as well but still not the firm hit as you describe. I don't think we'll find it from layered tips. So I will try it with a Triangle later this week.

I have spoke to Royce about removing the pad... not a good idea.
I will let you know after I get the Triangle installed later this week... surely there must be someone here that has tried an OB1 with a non-layered tip....?

Earl Strickland is using a elkmaster pressed tip on his OB 1 and told me you can,t make the stroke shots he shoots with a layered tip. I shoot with a OB 1 with medium Tallisman and like it but can't make Earls shots with it, but it ain't the tip.

Doh!

Efren used to use pressed Elkmaster tips too.. which I tried but still couldn't make the shots he can make. =o]

Thats what I meant and down here in the great South it's Duh!! and doh my be a female whitetail.

a local cuemaker Don Wallace, here in the dfw metroplex let me hit some balls with an ob1 shaft that he had put a harder ferrule & a talisman layered tip on.

I gotta say, it is one good hitting shaft. I know it kinda defeats the purpose of having an ob1, but i've tried an ob1 & i just do not like the hit at all, waaaayyy too soft for me.

I"m tempted to have Varney change the ferrule but I'm concerned that the deflection of the shaft might be increased. I guess I gotta try to get used to the shaft the way it is now and if I just can't stand the thud then I'll take a chance on changing the ferrule. (but I just KNOW that I'll not be able to stand the thud)

Tell you what Jim...everyone here knows you are an honest gentleman. I'll do the work for free (you cover shipping) and you give your honest thoughts on if it increased deflection or not. I've only converted close to 100 Ob's now. I must be doing something right....some customers are sending back 2 & 3 Ob's at a time to get changed.:)

Jim, it might grow on you

Jim,

That thud might grow on you with time. After playing with a milk dud for years I hated the "tink" of a hard layered tip. Sounded like every shot was a miscue. I got used to it after awhile. One thing about the thud, your stroke seems smoother. Matter of fact, I think I'm going back to the thud, especially if it will make me shoot like Earl! :) :) :) He isn't getting much backing against Shane but I think most of us would be real happy to play at his level!

Well Kevin.... since you're reasonably sure that the deflection won't change much I'll send you the shaft to convert but I don't want it done free.

Everybodys got to make a living and you need to charge me the same labor charge you charge everybody else. That's the only way I can feel like we had an equitable transaction. I receive a service, you get paid for providing that service.

Please let me know your paypal address and your shipping address and we'll git'r done. :D

I understand your thoughts about changing the ferrule, but please understand that the modification that you are contemplating will siginificantly increase the tip end mass of the cue shaft, which will definately change the low squirt, or deflection characteristics of the cue shaft! I did the math a while back, and if I recall, it would increase the mass by about 50% for the last few inches of the cue shaft.

Also, the hit of the OB-1 is quiet by design. Changing the ferrule will not significantly alter that. The "Ping" that most shafts give is actually more noise than feedback. I would be happy to discuss it with you on the phone, so feel free to call me toll free at 877-399-9901. I am there M-F 8 to 5 CST.

This may sound a bit crazy but I have been thinking that the OB1 shaft has too little deflection and puts too much torque/spin on the cue ball causing extra swerve on occasion on minor cut shots.

My crazy thoughts are that they either need to reduce the amount of swerve that the shaft puts on the cue ball or increase the amount of deflection.

I don't know how they can reduce the amount of swerve but that would be my choice. Shoot, I don't even know if it can be done. I will be trying a Moori Layered Medium Tip in the future but right now I am concentrating on playing with my traditional shafts.

Probably just a crazy man's thoughts and not be be engaged seriously.....

Thanks Royce... I appreciate the attention. But.. alas my OB1 is on the way towards mutilation but Kevin promised he'd go easy on her.

I wonder how much the end mass will increase? Kevin... are you going to put a heavy metal ferrule on that puppy?

I weighed the shaft in grams before it left here and will weight it when I get it back as I'm curious. That might not determine the EXACT difference in the end mass but it should be awfully close. Stay tuned for the next exciting episode. ;)
