OB cues shut down?

Does (before this latest news) OB still make their original shaft? The one with the moon shaped cross section splices, and the laminated wood ferrule?

I tried that shaft at the Philly expo OB booth in the early 2000’s. It wasn’t for me (felt too rough in my bridge hand), but it was visually super different than any other shaft and immediately recognized as OB brand. I thought that was great for marketing reasons. I used to see players have that shaft quite a bit during those years, but haven’t in a while.
I tried many shafts at an expo around that time frame. I loved the OB with the wood ferrule. Bought one and told Charlie from the pro shop at The Green Room in Dundalk MD. He started carrying them and sol a ton of them. I still have original shaft. Don’t use it anymore since I switched to a Lambros cue.

Talking about web sites,Schmelke spelled Cocobolo as Cocobola on their site.
I e mailed them but they never bothered to fix it .

The R040 cue is crafted with a Cocobola butt and long ten inch prongs, premium hard maple shaft and a 5/16" dia., 18 tpi joint, giving this cue a natural soft hit. The soft tip and juma ferrule give a perfect combination of control and power. The shaft is coated with a special UV finish giving it a smooth, easy glide surface with minimal upkeep. The UV finish also protects the shaft from moisture and chalk stains.
They are far from the only cue maker/seller that has done that.

They quit that a while ago. The originals had laminated strips that were then spiral laminated together. When the '+' line came out they went with solid strips that were spiral lamin. IMO those were the best shafts they made. I had a Classic+(white ferrule-pro taper) on a G. Kucharski butt that played awesome. They eventually quit doing laminating altogether. I never did like the wood ferrule, to me they felt waaay too soft on impact.

I agree. But if you can play with a hard tip, which is my preference, the maple ferrule is vigorous and alive! Nothing dead about it.

They still hit soft. That's why they came out with the white fiber ferrule. I tried a pretty hard water-buffalo tip on one and still was too soft(and quiet) for me.

the ferrule isn't what makes it soft and quiet... it's the sound dampening foam running down the center of it.

A few people commented to me my cue (OB pro plus) felt soft, mushy, or flimsy. I personally never had a problem with it. I don't really chase after "hit". I just like low deflection. The hollow section helped make it that way. I can tell OB got gripes about this because after they revamped the product line, the website was full of verbiage saying such-and-such had a "firm, stiff hit" or whatever. And for some reason, it's like they decided 'deflection' was unfashionable to talk about anymore, so they barely mentioned it... most cues, I had no idea how they deflected. It used to be 3 simple tiers of deflection, basically normal, low, very low. Now it's ???, ????, ??????. This is why I could never pull the trigger on any shaft.

They were soft and probably the reason for the c/f pad under the tip and required to be there. I have a couple of thier wood ferrules left, I can peel the layers apart. Even in soft wood, the gluing process matters. Some glues/epoxies hold up to impact and some just don't!
For repeated wood ferrule problems, I started making my own. I told Shane about it when he was running things and why, so there was no confusion.

Another thing I hope the new ob company does.
Change thier version of the uni loc insert.
Use the standard one's offered or get the version Unique products sell.
Both are very good.
Or...
Have one's made to the uni loc spec's but change the outer thread from 7/16x20 to a more compatible wood thread like
7/16x14 which will hold stronger with epoxy!

so, they got bought out? They are living on?
No idea. Only going by this thread.
It would be better for the Industry is someone bought it and they got back on track of where they started. I use to have great conversations with Royce. Great guy and very interesting opinions.

Maybe Mr. Griffin thought it wise not to talk about it.
Standard operating procedures.
Shoot
Mention AZ to a lot of Cue makers. Listen to how quiet it gets!
Fake names
Lots of smoke and mirrors
Everyone knows everything
Or
Atleast think they do.
Think about it lmao
