that looks like the gus on the cover of snap magazine form may/june 1991. i think fast n loose is making a tribute cue about this cue. there is a matching fellini case that goes with this cue. i had believed it was in the glenn family collection. maybe someone with more knowledge can chime in.

guy
Guy ,
The cue you are referring to on the Snap magazine cover.. still belongs to Pete and Denny Glenn and does not have someones name on it. Also it is in much better condition and they would never sell the cue.

David

thanx david. after i wrote that i pulled out my copy of that magazine and did realize it wasn't the same cue.

THIS CUE IS THE FREAKIN NUTZZZ. FORGET MONEY, THEY CAN HAVE BOTH MY KIDNEYS FOR IT.....ANYBODY WANT TO BUY SOME TASCARELLAS?

A SEARING WON'T GET MY CUES FROM ME, BUT THE RIGHT AMOUNT OF CASH MIGHT.

P.S. WHICH POWDER BLUE SEARING YOU GOT?

Do you think the Rosewood Barbell cue on Marks site is worth more than this cue? It seems his number is correct for the cue.

You pose a good question, look at the particulars. The cue in auction has a semi-twin, the Snap magazine cue. So you know now that owning it, there is a similar cue. Marks cue in a way, has no equal. The closest cue to it, is the cue shown in the first blue book. A rosewood barbell cue with a tenth of the inlay work.

The downside to the rosewood cue is everyone loves ebony, ebony is much more sleek IMHO. Also you have "ivory" in the ebony, not MOP. MOP is another material that you either love or hate. It's really a beauty is in the eye of the beholder situation. Marks cue is all original, with receipt, and has the original fancy Fellini. It's all a situation of what you want and like.

Then there is the selling factor. What a lot of people need to realize is when a person sells a piece like this, the train of thought is to maximize your sale, because in all likely hood, you won't own it again. So a person should try and get what he can. Over the BB, over market value, doesn't matter. You cannot count on one hand how many times a piece like this comes up for sale in a year.

Esnipe is going to blow a fuse when this auction ends.... I am happy to see the cue getting the attention it deserves. I bet the guy could have made more money by selling through a cue broker...

I don't think I would ever sell a cue of this magnitude on Ebay!

At this point, I am starting to feel really bad for Barry. His phone must be ringing off the hook with "is it legit" questions. Has anyone spoken to him? Would he even attempt to authenticate based on these pics alone, although there are quite a few with pretty good detail.

I Am Sorrybut...

Gus Szamboti was a great cue maker. He made some of the nicest cues I have ever seen or hit with. I have not had all the experience with high end cues as some of the people in here but feel I have good taste in what is a good looking cue and what is not. Personally, I have found that Box cues are ugly as homemade sin and just want to understand why these are so expensive compared to some of his other cues. If I had the money, I would buy a Gus but this one I just dont understand. 3 differnt ring styles on 1 cue. Nonmitred boxes. Inlays that appear to be coming out. No authenticity.(To our knowledge) I think Barry's cues look and play better anyway. Not trying to ruffle any feathers just want to understand if someone can explain it to me. ASIDE FROM THE QUANTITY OF CUES HE MADE, WHAT MAKES THEM SO VALUABLE???? I play with Scruggs, Mottey, Searing, Josey. Barry and a few other premier cuemakers cues and there really is not that much of a difference in playability. Again, not trying to ruffle feathers, just trying to understand, Anyway, good luck to whomever wins this auction and I hope it is real for your sake. PM me if you want to tell me your opinion. Thanks in advance.

It's an interesting question "WHAT MAKE THEM SO VALUABLE????". In addition to cues I also am like guitars, there are a few years of Gibson Les Paul Guitars that new sold for $250, now bursts (58, 59 and 60's) sell consistently (privately and through auctions) for between $250,000 and $350,000, and to be honest they are marginally better than a new Les Paul Historic (58, 59, 60 replicas that sell for $4-5K). As John Wright once told me he believed one day there would be true auctions (Sotheby type) for the great cuemakers cues (Gus, George, etc) and just as those crazy wooden ducks with their heads turned backwards that sell for $750,000, someday cues by the masters will as well. Why does it happen, why do guitars sell for $350,000 and ducks for $750,000, not sure but I would think we have a lot more people with a lot more money than every before and they want what they want, basic economics "supply and demand". I personally believe we are seeing the tip the of the iceberg for the really great works of art cue collections. BTW mine actually play pretty well just like a 59 Les Paul.

PS I personally dont like box cues either..
