So the young kid in the pic with a young Mike is not Bobby Hawk, I gather? I never seen him w/ no mustache.

I have no idea why I was down on the ground looking at the shot. Unless I was watching to see if the player is keeping one foot on the floor. Maybe???
By the way, an interesting story about the final match between Rempe and Efren (I directed this event along with Pat Fleming). Prior to the match, someone from Efren's camp offered to make a "saver" with Jimmy. First prize was 35K but only 13K for second, a huge discrepancy, that even Efren noticed. They offered to "save" $5,000, making it now 30K on top and 18K for second.
When I heard about this offer I was sure Jimmy would accept. Lo and behold he turned them down, saying "Every time I make a saver I lose." Jimmy wanted to beat Efren so bad, since he had lost to him almost every time they played. No question that Jimmy was the underdog going in. I admired Jimmy when I heard he had turned down the deal. I'm pretty sure I ref'd this match, but for the life of me I can't say for certain. But either way I was ringside and Jimmy played 'Lights Out Pool,' giving Master Reyes a lesson on that day.
Jimmy Rempe is one of the all time greats, excelling at all games on the pool table. He had the misfortune to come along in the Sigel, Mizerak, Hall, Hopkins and Varner era and that meant he was relegated to second, third, fourth and fifth in a lot of major tourneys he played. But I'll say this, I doubt there are too many players who made as many top five finishes in major tournaments during their entire career. Jimmy was always in the mix going into the last day! He made a decent living as a pro pool player for a good twenty years. In those days you could play in a good tournament maybe 15-20 times a year. And as Jam said before, there were several tournaments (like this one) with serious prize money every year. Usually three or four with a top prize of at least 25K. That was real money thirty years ago! And guess what, all these tournaments paid off IMMEDIATELY!
