The photographer is Ross Y. Furman apparently from Maine. Does anyone know him from the pool hall?

Those are some of the coolest pool photos I've seen in a long time. I'd love to have a few of those hanging in my game room! :)

Thanks for sharing!

Bob, thanks for posting that! Those pics are incredible. And not just the ivory balls, either -- the pics of the old polyester balls, cylindrical- and triangular-shaped chalk, and Phelan's works are inspiring to look at.

I wonder if he sells reprints of these?

Interestingly, he raised money to make a student center the Husson College, as well as being on their Board of Trustees.

He is currently a CFO of a capital-lending outfit. No website for his photos, though. :(

Definitely has a New England accent. I find him incredibly cool ---> Husson College Student Center. :)

More old school

Not to hijack the thread, but wouldn't it be nice to have an ongoing thread of "Old Pool Pictures". Clearly from the replies, there are lots of people like me looking for something more interesting then a Color of Money reprint poster to hang in their room.

When I was on a mission to get some cool art for my room, I ran across these old pool pictures taken by Bill Porter of the Dayton 9-Ball open 1982 (I grew up in Dayton so they had even more of a meaning for me).

Anyway, enjoy some more old pool pictures of some legends (and you can easily get nice prints of these for your room, I did!).

I just remembered a book I have with some seriously atmospheric pictures from the Clichy-Montmartre billiard hall in Paris. The title is "Academie de billard -- un dernier regard" and it's by J-C. Carriere and B. Rajau. I've been to the hall a couple of times.

Outside at night:

I also got some great pics from Bill Porter's website. There are lots of photos from the eighties (Keith, Jimmy Reid, Cornbread Red, Mataya,, Ronnie Allen, Richie Ambrose, Efren just to name a few). If you go to http://billporter.smugmug.com/Sports and scroll down, he has two slide shows of pool pics put to music, one "Sweet Dreams" and the other "Familiar Faces". The music is so appropriate! It really brings you back to the day...

Smug Mug is a photo sharing website and some pictures can be downloaded for free. You can also order prints for a reasonable price too! Pool in Action can also be found on Smug Mug. They have some great pics too (more 90's to current photos). They are a little more pricey than Bill Porter's.

I think it would be a great idea to have a permanent category just for sharing pool pics!!!

Enjoy!

I have been to Montmartre a couple times and regret never having visited le Academie.

Good God, it looks amazing.:banghead:

Are there any photos of Danny McGoorty available ? I am curious as his book is one of my favorites, if anyone has a link i would appreciate seeing one.

You should get Robert Byrne's book on McGoorty. The photos below are from the Citadel Press edition of the book. The original hardback and the Sports Illustrated edition do not have any pictures. The most recent edition from the "Broadway Library of Larceny" has different pictures, and I think a little better than the Citadel version.
