Longevity

In Salem, Oregon 'The Cue Ball' has been in the same spot with the same owner, Jim Leybold, since 1963. Last time I stopped in, he was working the counter at 11:30pm on a Saturday night after running a tournament that morning. Pretty sporty after almost 50 years. I'm only 24 years in-just a pup.

Beat me to it...great hall. I try to get there at least once a week. Those who wish to play on a classic Brunswick Centennial? Yep...:)

Oldest pool rooms

There used to be an old room in Memphis (on Beale Street) that was called Peoples.

I think it had been there for awhile - but not sure it is still there.

+1. Lots of local players enjoying the bar table championships (& WorldPPA), and the Western BCA last week. These events drive interest in pool that continues on after the event ends.

That's amazing!

My local pool room operator recently asked me if I knew which was the longest running pool room in California. I said it would have to be Joe Jost's in Long Beach. To my surprise, he thought it was Carpinteria Billiards (now called Carp & Linden Pub). I've since asked several Carpinteria locals about the place and they said their parents have always remembered that place to be a pool hall. It would have to go quite a ways back because Joe Jost's has been around before the 1920's. I'm not sure if it's still there, and if it is, it's more of a bar than a pool room.

I stopped into The Cue Ball about 5 years ago and ended up playing some cheap sets with Jim.

As it turns out I was in Smiths about a decade ago playing none-other-than Cornerman Fred.

So I've been looking around for some rooms in MA to try, and those two were not listed anywhere on sites that I can find.

How are Smith's and Columbia Road? Are they filled with people that use the tables as another rest for their beer and as chairs?

I stopped by Smith's about a month ago, driving down from Northampton. Based on the web page, I had high hopes. But it was basically typical. Older Gold Crown's spaced ok, but not great. Cloth was not Simonis or any knock-off. Pockets were big. And on a Thursday (I think) at about 9:30 there was not a single player in the place and maybe 5 tables total in use by the time I left at 11. So there was no one to even ask to play some one pocket.

Staff were friendly and the place was clean. It's probably better on some other night.

As you might expect, Chicago has several really old bowling and billiard places, and of course various and sundry speakeasy era establishments...but the oldest remaining original billiard rooms in the city are most likely located in the private fraternal and social clubs. Several of which still exist today, and date back to at least the 1880s. The Union League Club comes to mind, established 1879...

As for 'public' billiard rooms, it's a shame that the billiard-room portion of the building is no longer a billiard room, because one of the coolest prohibition-era joints in Chicago is still the Green Mill.

Billiard, Jazz, and Capone history all in one...

Boy do I remember that place, the best pickled eggs I ever had. One night after eating a whole jar of them and five schooners of PBR's I woke up with the worst stomach cramps ever. ----- good times!

Now that's a classy older room indeed
