OMGWTF vs HairDildo Part 2 - US Amateur

So I was just on the US Am website, and the lady who won last year is from my hometown of Muncie. Strange but kinda cool.

Haha, yeah. Now that you mention it, I went on there to look at past winners...I didn't realize my first round win at the US open this year was against the 07' Men's champion

Are there $ payouts for this or just trophies/plaques?

From my understanding, there's no money. It's trophies and entry into a pro event. This is no knock on the people that end-up playing because many of them do it for many different reasons but I can't justify playing in an event like this unless it's in my own backyard. I'm sure there are hundreds, maybe even thousands of players that feel the same way.

I agree, I played one year (I think it was 2002 or 2003) but I couldn't remember if it was for cash or not. It was in Berlin, CT, just a couple hours from where I live

Jude...All of the players in the US Amateur got plane tickets and hotel accomodations. Nobody paid their own way here. For the winner...yes, it is just a trophy...a five foot tall trophy...but you also get a paid entry into next year's US Open 9ball.

Awards

In addition to advancing to a pro event, each Champion will receive a magnificent marble and bronze trophy and event jacket.

Additionally, all lady contestants advancing to the Championship Rounds will receive 2 nights complimentary private lodging. Gentlemen contestants advancing to the Championship Rounds will receive 3 nights complimentary private lodging. Reservations must be made by Oct. 8, 2013.

Both Champions receive a one year free APA membership and are invited to return to the Championship Round the following year to defend their titles.

I don't see any mention of airfare. That's not to mention the expenses attributed to playing in the local qualifier. Finally, this is a winner-take-all format. There is no second place.

I hope Scott is right here but I was under the impression if you won a regional qualifier they paid for your entry into the Championship event, but they DO NOT pay for your airfare.

If they pay for your airfare I will be playing in this next year for sure. I have heard it's a great tournament regardless of the lack of financial incentive. However, the airfare part is huge.

**This is funny - I just now got a text from a friend of mine that is playing in it - he just landed there. Someone obviously paid for his ticket but I don't think it was the APA.

I'm also really skeptical about the fine print of the award. Do I get my own room or am I expected to share it with another competitor? I ask because frankly, I would definitely bring my wife and I want to know if I'm then expected to pay for half of the room because I'm obviously staying with her. Regardless, without airfare, this quickly becomes moot. It's really hard to justify going to a tournament, paying for two flights and KNOWING that if you don't win the whole thing, you're a loser.

Jude,

I hope you aren't right about the hotel room thing - that would just be too much.

I will say the fact that so many players are willing to play in this tournament shows me that the game isn't dead yet. There's still a hunger for pool in this country, especially amoung us amateurs. I'm shocked how many people play in the qualifiers knowing there is no money to be gained. On the one hand, it gives me some hope for the game but on the other hand, I'm wondering how all these players can justify playing in this thing.

They don't pay for anything other the 3 days hotel, you get your own room. I've been, I know. I qualified this year, but I'm not going due to minimal play of late.

You must pay to enter a qualifier, thousands of people. Then if you win you must pay for the finals on the spot. Then you must pay your own flight there, and they don't book hotels close enough to the venue, so then you need a rental car. Lmao. And if you do win you get a trophy and entry to the U.S.Open which you most likely won't cash anyhow.

They got a real good thing workin here. Haha.

It's an APA event where they've conditioned their members to accept strange payout structures. In all sincerity, bump the entry-fee to $150 and expand the number of participants that receive awards and I'm there. Until then, there are only two winners for a national event. Sorry, I'm not buying it.

I stand corrected. I was thinking about the APA Singles Nationals, where you DO get entry fee, hotel and airfare paid for, when you win a regional event. Sorry for the confusion.

That may be the case, but there's enough pride in the title that the past champs are definitely no slouches. Heck, you even said yourself that you qualified for it.

I'd give it a (failing) shot, but we've already got 2 regional BCA and 2 regional APA events that are nearly a week long each as it is, so just pick a couple of those and a little time for other vacations and my PTO is all tapped out before November. :(

Edit: Scott, that's why I can't get enough of the singles event! Next year, all participants get their own rooms, too.. err, finally.

Joke of a tournament

Yup, this is a joke of a tournament, unless you're into bronze trophies and lame jackets; THEN ITS FREAKIN' AWESOME. Ppl asked if I was playing in this and when I found out there was no money it was a no-brainer. 5' TROPHY?!? Yeah I tried to give my landlord a trophy once for rent but she wouldn't take it. Imagine that.

Well, sorta. You get a $300 allowance for airfare. The last time I went, the cheapest I could get was over $400 (not horrible but not free). As well, the hotel wasn't entirely "paid". You're expected to bunk with another competitor OR pay half price. That's not to mention that the "free nights" do not include the night BEFORE the event (the obvious night anyone would arrive) but does include the night of the finals (the obvious night anyone would leave). In sum, you end up paying for half of the hotel cost for 3 nights and one full night so it's about 37.5% off.

Listen, I enjoy the APA on the local level and although I'm not active right now, I'm sure there will come a day when I'll play again. But make no mistake of it, you will pay money to go to Vegas. There is no doubt in my mind that the average person must spend money to go. It's subsidized, sure. But it's not free.

.

That is the sum of it. There are just so many tournaments during the calendar year. It's really hard to burn days. Hell, I'm still trying to manage my days and get to the US Open which I've never done and I get 4 weeks off. This event and the respective qualifier requires you to burn at least 4 vacation days. You have to ask yourself, how much are those days worth to you?

Exactly! I would've loved to watch the MC in December, too. I did the regional BCA in March, APA singles in April, vacation in July and October and had one day left to burn for the BCA regional in October for the team event. Besides, I hate throwing money away, so it's hard to justify all of the qualifiers and such unless I'm shooting well(pecking order and all). APA just paid me back for the past several years, so I can still deal with that. Not to mention, I got roped into a damn strong APA master team.. hard to turn that down. I went from trying to take time off to being on 2 teams and subbing for BCA. :o
