Just caught this while reading the news...pretty startling.
hmm..ivory cues?
Being in China i'm curious where these ivories are going to...i don't see alot of ivory made ornaments here...

Here's an extract of the news (click here to read from link):

HONG KONG - One of the world's biggest ever seizures of illicit ivory - a haul of tusks which cost the lives of 600 African elephants - has been made in Hong Kong.

The raid was the outcome of a two-month-long, cross-border investigation by Hong Kong and Guangdong customs agents, South China Morning Post reported.

The unprecedented haul weighed 3.8 tonnes - 1.6 tonnes more than was seized worldwide in the whole of 2007.

It could have fetched upwards of HK$26.7 million (S$4.2 million/US$3.4 million) on Asia's booming black market.

Wow, I'm no bleeding heart ivory hater by any means, but even I have to imagine putting a live elephant behind every pair of those tusks in the photo.

Such an incredible waste.

Doesn't surprise me. From people that eat deer penis and bear gall bladder.

Kill a bear for its gall bladder and leave the rest to rot, just like the elephants and rhinos.
They'll eat anything that breathes and sh!ts.

What a coincidence! National Geographic's current issue has an article about illegal elephant ivory. The article said that China is the largest consumer of illegal ivory. There were even little assembly line workshops where many people work to carve out designs. In the Philippines, there's a very religious area where religious ivory statues are a big deal and collectible. Picked the issue up last week. First one I ever purchased off a stand, lol. After reading it, I really don't care for ivory as I used to.

Would like to see the noses, ears, and heads of the perpetrators piled up just like that.

The 21st century and man is still a dumb beast.

Looks old to me, Fresh ivory wouldnt be so dark. Its not huge tusks in most of the pics, looks like lots of cow ivory which is much smaller than the bulls.

I know lots about ivory. One thing is happening now in Zim is the Chinese and Mugabe are in bed together and they are hammering the elephants hard for ivory, the locals like it cause its food, they eat everything. I have eaten elephant many times, its great. But it is now a concern there where it wasnt 5 years ago, we saw it coming. THe ivory in the pics dont look like Zim ivory, looks like Kenya Ivory. Different areas have different shape and diameter ratios, Tanzania has long thin ivory(not good for cues), Zimbabwe and Zambia have great ivory(short and fat) for balls and all other pool uses.

I spent lots of time in Africa, they burn it there in piles sometimes(how brutal is that??) they also have auctions-the Chinese always buy it. There are wear houses full of ivory that have accumulated for years which looks like whats in these pics. "Parks" as its referred to is the Govt entity that oversees ivory and its use(storage, legally harvested CITIES sport hunted elephants, poached elephants, or found on the ground) ivory all is accounted for by Parks.

One other thing is poached ivory is chopped off at the lip most of the time, the tusks in these pics were chopped out of hte skull(about 1/3 of the ivory is above the lip and cant be seen, it goes almost up to the eyeball sockets) So they chop it out keaving honeycomb bone around the tusk and then its boiled so the tusk slips out of the socket(the honeycomb part thats chopped from the skull) making the walls on the ends very thin. I can see that clearly. This aint poached ivory, Its one hell of a lot of work to chop out tusks(I have done it-i have pics, however they are gruesome for azb), poachers dont take the time to do that they cut the ivory atthe lip mst times leaving some behind(they need to flee the crime scene) In Zim its legal to kill on sight ivory poachers, no questions asked.

In these pics the ivory might not be legal(and who really knows, the corruption is so deep), but it wasnt poached. THAT IM POSITIVE OF. Corruption in Africa is perhaps the worst in the world, they could have sold it and ratted the Chinese out for a "finders fee" the WWF (world wild life fund). we will never know whats really going on. it will burn. Who cares the elephants are dead, why waste the ivory?

You can be sure in 90% of sub-saharan Africa there is no shortage of elephants, the meat and some of the intestines are very good to eat. So they are hunted for that purpose as well, nothing especially protein goes to waste in Africa. Dont feel some loss over elephants cause American TV shows constantly pitch the "Extinction is near BS, its a racket to raise $$$. Go to Africa spend a year in the bush like I have and see for your self, its like cows here.

I have shot 14 elephants in my life, a few tuskless cows, and a couple trophy bulls. Nothing went to waste, I wouldnt kill a animal ever that was rare, like Rhino they are all but shot out and its a shame.

thats the straight scoop

I'm not anti-hunting guy by any stretch.....but I'm absolutely baffled at the motivation or reasoning that would inspire someone to kill elephants. (Besides greed...)

Lets see...they can't hide....you can see them from a mile away. As long as your not stupid...they pose no threat. I'm sure you need some insanely large gun to kill them. You literally can't miss miss your target their the size of a typical house.....Wow what an exhilerating feeling to hear them scream in agony as the collapse to the ground.....congrats on your 14 elephants.......

I have never heard a elephant scream that I shot, I brain shot them all. I have video. they feel no pain its instant death, i wouldnt ever heart shoot a elephant, to me thats unconsconsiable. Thats like shooting a bear with a arrow and watching it bleed out for 45 minutes, disgusting. I'm not proud of the 14 elephants, i was just stating my credentials, nothing more or less, hunting isnt about killing.

Second they will kill you instantly, they charge when they see you or smell, they can run straight line 30mph and thru trees, you cant out run a elephant, they are vicious in africa, i have been charged 2 times, once i almost was killed, the other wasnt to dangerous.

in asia they are nice tame animals-big difference. its very dangerous hunting and not for novice hunters.. Its not like walking up and shooting a horse just standing there, i woudnt do that.

you know nothing about hunting, and thats cool, something new for you to learn about,

go to accuratereloading.com its a huge forum, open the Afrian hunting forum its near the top and get a education, it takes years to learn to hunt elephant, its not what you think it is, additionally I have looked for 30 days and not shot a elephant but looked over 1000 of them looking for a trophy bull, it aint about killing at all.

And when you kill one, what do you do with it? Its not like you pay the extra baggage fee and bring it home. Its like going out to a game farm. You pay a guide, ride out to a spot where they know there is a 99% chance of spotting a herd. They have spotters. The spotters radio in that
there is a herd 4 miles west of Oomfufu lake. Your driver takes you there and you pull the trigger.

I just cut out a newspaper article re religious leaders getting together and doing their part in trying to stop the poaching of elephants and rhino in Kenya.

Eric, you seem to be reading from a different book than the rest of us.

They also mentioned that the largest market for ivory is China.

And when do we know when it is a good time to stop killing elephants, tigers, lions, gorillas and orangutans?
When there are 4 of them left and they are already in zoos.

Old Chinese joke: the only thing with 4 legs they won't eat is the table.

I've been to some of the poorest parts of the world, and shared food and drink with those that don't know where their next meal is coming from, so am not going to criticise how the poverty stricken eek out a living, but I'm perfectly happy to criticise rich bastards who can only feel good about themselves by shooting animals happily minding their own business.

Sad, deluded bastards.

Being an fan of the occasional circus joke, ie; elephants and enemas, I am nonetheless saddened by this report. Wholesale slaughter of anything, be it man or beast, should never be tolerated. :frown:

WOW, you guys missed the boat on this one. Fatboy repeatedly said that ever elephant he shot, the entire thing was consumed. He also gave you the straight info from his PERSONAL, FIRST HAND, experience. If you guys are getting you info from the TV and the Internet it must definitively trump his first hand account.

I'm guessing he killed an elephant for the experience. I've heard he also beats baby seals on the weekend with a nine iron for fun!! Why does it matter why he was hunting unless he was doing it illegally, which doesn't seem to be the case. Let it go and utilize his first hand knowledge to your benefit.

I enjoy hunting, and think it would be an absolute BLAST, to hunt elephant! Donate the meat to feed the hungry, sell the ivory and donate the proceeds to some people that need it.

best,

Justin
