One Pocket 101

Good rule of thumb, but the tricky suggestion of Walt still applies regardless of how much you can twist a (banking) ball. I've seen Efren double-kiss balls when trying to bank.

Walt's suggestion is applicable to all skill levels. The difference is what you consider to be a dead double-kiss. Best not to tempt fate... usually.

Good advice. A seasoned player shared that with me that years ago.
 
A shot I like might be called a power shot. When there are several balls still in the stack, look for a ball to bank hard into them and move them toward your hole. Also, killing the QB behind a blocker. Many times there will be a ball or two near the end rail. A good spot to park the QB.

Kidding aside, I have been playing for over 45yrs and like you, I was told this many moons ago by an old timer, who by the way, years ago, I wouldn't play unless he played me "3 and stop" :) Every time he came into the poolroom and saw me, he yelled Hey 3 and stop, lets play some. :) He's what made me think to use the screen name. :)

Here is the way I treat those type shots. Now, I am no means a good one pocket player, but, I use this shot in many other facets of the game including an occasional friendly game of 1P.

I always aim the center of the cue ball at the left side of the object ball where the base of the object ball touches the table. I use about a 1 1/2 tips of low outside (left) english. Even though the object ball goes in deep to the rail, the reverse english pulls it back to finish the bank. The cue ball then doubles out of the corner and leaves it back at the other end of the table, safe from the opponents hole.

Kind of like the half ball hit to cross bank when the kiss isn't there, I looked for a spot that would work when the kiss "is there". Like any shot, practice and once you find the right speed and stroke, the shot is automatic.
 
A couple of tips

Here are two tips that come to mind: 1) Buddy Hall once said that when you are in in real bind playing one-hole, if you really look at the layout closely, you will almost always find a SIMPLE way to duck or get safe. (Even if it involves an intentional scratch.) and 2) When it's your shot and you look over the layout, you will usually, pretty quickly, come up with what seems to be a good option to shoot. If you take just a few more seconds and look for a SECOND option, the second option will often be better than your first option.
 
The rail and stack are generally the best places to leave your opponent - Nobody like to shoot with the "bear-claw" bridge - This should complement what TG already said about fighting to keep position on your opponent

This is a rule that Grady uses and it is 99.9% accurate. If you cannot shoot the cue ball into the pocket, then there is a kiss using inside english. If you can shoot the cue ball straight into the pocket (like a scratch) then there is no kiss with inside.
