One Pocket Challenge at DCC

i watched Efren in Hardtimes playing a guy 12-4, Efren got a shot and ran 15 into his pocket without opening up the stack he just picked them off one at a time. there were 3 balls up table, when Efren got his 12 the guy he was playing went to his backer to get more $$$, so Efren 2 railed the 13th ball in and banked the last 2 in afterwards while he was waiting. I have seen guys break,BIH and run 15, but never run 15 without opining the stack. I was the only person watching that game. Amazing. There were no hangers, all tough shots, he didnt break more than 3 or 4 balls out of the stack at once. Man I wish I had a video of that feat. After the 15th ball fell Efren just set his cue down like it was nothing. And yes the guy came back and lost.

He should be barred too! But he's not! :D

We will be doing the first One Pocket Challenge in the same room that Bob Jewett is doing the Straight Pool Challenge. Steve Lomako and I will be running it.

The format is to try to run all the balls you can in One Pocket, in five tries. You can break wide open, but the cue ball plays where it stops. If you scratch on the break, you get cue ball in hand behind the line.
...
Maybe it was mentioned in later posts, but you need to write down some other rules.

When to balls made extraneously on the break spot?

Do balls made in your pocket on a scratch break count?

If the player fouls, I assume the current ball doesn't count, but is a point deducted? (I don't think it is.)

I'm sure there are other rules.

At straight pool, we will be calling all fouls. The 14.1 prelims will be in the Drinkwater Room from Sunday through Wednesday. On Thursday and Friday, there will be two or three 14.1 finals matches in the Drinkwater Room, but mostly they will be on the TV table.

Thanks Bob. Pretty much standard One Pocket rules will apply.

Balls made on the break spot after the break. Except of course if you make them in your hole. Then they count. If you scratch on the break, they will spot back up.

If a player makes a ball and fouls/scratches, he will lost that ball and his turn will be over. Nothing spots back up here, since this turn is over, and we re-rack for the next turn.

Any other questions, fire away.

One thing Bob is doing that I like is calling fouls on all balls. I think we will do the same. That way there are no questions about whether a ball moved and affected the shot or not. If you move an object ball, it's a foul, PERIOD!

We now have a total of $550 confirmed in Added Money. I would like to get it up to $1,000. All sponsors will be acknowledged for their support. We may even let them have a free shot at it (three tries). Any donation from $100 up will be greatly appreciated.

So far, Jay and Steve $100 each, Ken Thomasson $100, Steve Booth (One Pocket.org) $100 and Arian Dacongan $150.

We just got $100 from John in New Hampshire and a $100 from Greg Sullivan. I'm going to guarantee a minimum of $1,000 Added right now.

Still a little confused, but that's not unusual!

It sounds like if you scratch on break you keep shooting because you said if you scratch on break balls spot back up.
Also in regular 1p if you make ball extraneously(sp) during your inning they stay down until your inning is over or you made all remaining balls. Why then would balls be spotted right away if you make them on your inning.
I ask this because the break is the most important shot and if a ball or more get spotted right away it could very possibly block an only shot and in the two days I have been trying this I have found only a couple of ways to break "fairly" successfully and this rule might change the ways I have been breaking.
And I would not mind donating either playing or just adding to pot but man with those numbers guys are talking about there are not too many people who have a chance. My best so far is 20 in about 100 tries. And I play pretty fair. The break is the key cause it is easy to get shut out on any given break, got any suggestions?
Thanks

my prediction is that Brian Gregg wins this one ........

Playing the "ghost", anything you make on the break (other than in your pocket) spots back up immediately. If you scratch on the break, you owe a ball and get to shoot from behind the line. Anything that goes down on this break, also spots back up.

If you make any balls in the course of the inning in other pockets, they will stay down until you've run all the balls on the table.

Any other questions?

The One Pocket Ghost Challenge will be held simultaneously with the One Pocket tournament at DCC, on January 6, 7 & 8. The prize money will be divided as follows. First place - 40% of all monies in the pot,
Second place - 30%, Third place - 20% and Fourth place - 10%.

There will be a $100 Bonus to the first player who runs a perfect 15.

NO ONE IS BARRED!!!

I know that

You already said , no one is barred just not in caps.
Sorry if I wanted to be clear but it makes a lot of difference. Your original premise was 1p challenge, no mention of ghost rules, which can be played anyway you want whereas 1p rules are specific and anytime u make a ball on the break in 1p it stays down unless you scratch. I could care less and I now will be practicing it the way u have it set up. If u break wide open u usually make a ball so I will now spot it.
And by the way, you did not answer my question. Any suggesion? :D
P.S. Glad it is over 3 days now so we can watch the real pros run out and get some hints before the shortstops donate.

It is easy to get shut out on any given break, if you end up frozen to a ball or just blocked in some way. That's one reason playing the One Pocket Ghost is so hard.

Suggestions...okay. Break hard and try to get your cue ball as close to the center of the table as possible. If you can do that, you will almost certainly have a shot(s) at your hole. A lot of guys break medium soft to control the cue ball to the opposite side from your hole. This break is one that frequently leaves you shotless.

That medium hard break can leave you shotless but often makes a ball in your pocket too letting you keep control of the table in a regular game. Which leads to a question about this ghost game. Do you call your pocket before or after the break?

I can't make The DCC this year but I'm still very curious how you play the One Pocket ghost. I usually just use both pockets and play against a low down sneaky conniving skunk but I get tired of playing myself all the time and thought I'd do something different.

Sorry Hu,

You have to pick your pocket before the break, not after. Wouldn't that be sweet! Everybody would be running nines and tens.

If the object of this challenge is to see how many total balls you can run in five attempts, then IMO the player should have BIH after the break. Otherwise, the winner of the competition would be primarily determined on how nice the balls spread, especially where the CB lies, immediately after the break shots.

It would be highly possible to have a guy like Efren score a total of only 30 in five tries, only because three out of the five attempts he had absolutely no shot following the break. But maybe that is your intention...to introduce a significant degree of luck such that the typical pool player has a shot to compete with the Efrens (like poker).

But if your objective for this challenge is to reward the more skillful player, then you should either allow BIH following the break, or only record the top 3 runs out of 6 attempts (or something like that). Just a few comments/suggestions.

Glad you're doing this though. Can't wait to hear how it turns out.

Thanks, but this is traditionally how the One Pocket ghost is played, no BIH after the break. You must control the cue ball and keep it in play. Some players (like Corey) do this better than others. Yes, there is a luck factor, just like in all other pool games.

At least if you scratch on the break, your turn isn't over. You just have to shoot from behind the line, owing a ball. The winner is the player who makes the most balls total in five tries. A very good turn is anything over 30. I expect a winning score in the 35-40 range.

Speaking of balls opening and such, some effort should be made to be sure that everyone works with a nice clean rack of balls each day.

Wish I could be there to give it a try.
