Opinion on Jerry Rauenzahn cues

Hi,

I am a huge fan of full spice cues, and I am looking to have a cue made, simple 4p4v traditional cue. I have been impressed by Jerry's work and really want to work with him on this small project.

I just want to know more about R cues playability. Does it hit stiff? how can you describe the taper he uses, and what is your opinion on the shaft wood?

Please help me out. I would love to read comments here or private messages.

thanks a lot for your input.

I rank the playablity of Jerry's cues right up there with other cues I own, Scruggs and southwest. His cues do hit stiff. I have two of his cues with 3 shafts each. The shaftwood is quality, and non of my shafts have turned funny in the years I had these cues. One thing is his shaftwood is not snow white. I you want shafts that looked bleached, he is not the cuemaker for you. The shafts I have are darker and show grain.

I agree, med-stiff hit. I had Jerry make my shafts at 12.5, which I prefer, and my cue was a 29.5in split(59in). so 13mm may play stiff. LMB/triangle. The best thing to do is spend 15min. talking to Jerry about your options. He can set it up to play just about anyway you like. ferrule/tip combos and joint can make a big difference. He's a great guy to deal with. And unless your set on a 5/16-14 piloted, his Big-pins also play awesome.

Fantastic playabilty and response.....Good Luck.

Thank you guys. I have always loved fullsplice cues and haven't played with a poor hitting fullsplice cue before, all are great hitting cues.

I haven't tried an R fullsplice but I believe it plays great also.

I just sent JR an email with very specific details how i want my cue to be. hopefully he will get back to me soon.

I haven't played with one but I have nothing but respect for Jerry and his work. I will tell you that you will get a cue built by a skilled and hard working craftsman.

He has tackled some pretty tough project cues, restorations, etc and always seems to make a masterpiece out of it. John Marshall and Wedge are two of his ongoing customers. There's nothing worse than trying to rebuild old cues but Jerry makes it look easy.

He's also one of a handful of cue makers to be able to duplicate the Brunswick 360 - no small feat.

From the ones I have seen Jerry has done some great work.

I had one of his cues, and I didn't like the hit of it, and frankly couldn't understand why, but just didn't like it. So what can be learned? Not much, hit and so many other things are subjective cue to cue, and cue maker to cue maker.

So my recommendation is play with one of his cues, if you like it, you are set. As the others have mentioned, he has done some pretty impressive cues.

I'll let you know in about 2 weeks... Brazilian Rosewood into straight grain Maple...30" shafts with extended pro taper, he's putting Juma on one and Melanine on the other to see which hit I prefer on these shafts, then he'll replace the one I don't prefer with the one I do. He wants it to hit the way I do...now that's service!

Thanks a lot. That's exactly what I thought also, his works have been excellent and it's very unreasonable if his cues don't play great. I have not played with a full splice cue that does not hit great. an R should be very special.

Thanks for your input, Ken. of course I will never know if I will like how his cue plays until I try one, but again, the cue I try will not play 100% like the cue I order. so, if I like every other thing about R cues, I think I will work with him. of course if he allows me to :)

please do let me know. It would be my honor to work with him on my cue project.

You will find Jerry very easy to work with every step of the way. Describe the type of hit and taper you are looking for and Jerry will try his best to match it. Jerry does excellent work at a very reasonable price with good lead times. I highly recommend him. I have 7 of his custom cues!!!

Thanks Wedge, that is a great way to work together. I am expecting a reply from him now :).

The Man to ask is John Henderson ( jrhendy ), as he plays exclusively with Jerry's Cues.

Thanks, I will sure shoot him a message.
