OTLB Rail extension

Glen lets put some perspective here just to avoid any future appraisals of me. I have had thousands of people working for me in mfg . I will leave it at that unless you want to compare resumes.

Whats the best tool you have ever invented for pool table mechs? where is it?

John...why do I care? That still don't make you somebody, and it don't make your work any better as a mechanic, so what difference does it make, certainly no difference to me;)

Your wrong Glen, now your just knocking my other accomlishments. How I achieved my other titles was exactly the same way I work on pool tables. Constantly trying to make it better, not accepting the norm and last but most important not doing what others say I have to.

John...do what ever turns you on buddy, I don't really care, get all the titles you want, they still don't make you better at what you do, and no one can pat you on the back better than YOU can;)

Well I agree with you, how are you getting better?????? Curious if you have come up with anything

Like what, I invented the worlds best ball polisher already, I consulted Diamond into building the best coin-operated pool table in the world. I'm a perfectionest, but I'm also a teacher in this industry, so what else do I have to do? I guess I must have gotten under your skin a little, because you sure act like you're bothered by my commets on puckers in your rails and offering to show you how to install the cloth better:D the reason I asked if it was Simonis, is because any other cloth is childs play to install, and shouldn't have puckers at all...if you really know what you're doing....in the first place;)

I am sure you do, I get paid to but the old fashioned way in cash. My customers are also happy.
This is like an Ali / Frazier bout. Two top men fighting for the title. Looks like it is neck and neck. OTLB challenging the champ for the title with new and crazy ways. I would have to say OTLB is Ali and RKC is Frazier.

OTLB,
I am looking forward to seeing your conversion from pool to billiards for Gold Crowns. I will tell you right now, if your idea is good and it's a quality product, I will defiantly be buying some. I am sure others would be interested as well.

Keep up the good work guys!!

Flame bait incoming be warned...

I have been reading this thread since it started, at first I was genuinely interested in it. It looked to be a great discussion on different ways of doing something.

Now it appears to have turned into a fight, over who's right, not what is right.

OTLB, I have formed the opinion that you have some sort of chip on your shoulder. Through out this thread you have stated that you want to make it better, but if that was the true case, when you are offered help in Improving YOUR new method you turn it down and act like it was a personal attack on your methods.

There is only one person who is perfect in everything they do and do not need advice from anyone else to improve on it, and sorry to say that isnt any of us. Your methods my very well have the design to change the industry, but without accepting the fact that you do not always have all the answers and someone out there might have a good one, I am sorry to say it will never go any farther then your workshop.

I was hoping to actually learn something on table machinces from this thread, but alas that does not seem to be the case, so I am walking away from it now.

I wish you all the best with your designs and idea's, but this is one person that is looking to learn the trade that will not be following them.

There's plenty of great information in the Mechanics area.
You just need to be able to recognize what is educational and what is drivel.

Glen your welcome to visit me ( A_1 BIlliards is on his way)and I would be happy to bring you to my gym. Your just like a brother I have.

There are guys that knock chips off shoulders and guys here that put them there. Everyone has the right to an opinion and I respect that. I walk the line on alot of things, I am NOT perfect and said that a long time ago. Was just trying to show as everyone had requested of me if people go back and read posts since I started here that I had to show. Agree with Dartman, there is a great deal of info here, and personalities. AS people see all the time. There are poeple who wait for others and those that don't. Why do you think there aren't alot of new ideas in this forum????????????????? Am I the only guy doing new things??? If there are others I think you need to ainte to stay in the game. I would love to see what other people are doing if anything and thats what I have shown more than anyone. Wether it worked or not.

Like I said earlier this is one way to do it.

I have never said my way was the only way,, 3 ways to do a job---your way, my way and the right way, everyjob is different

Good Day

John, I'll say this once,....new ways of doing things don't mean a damn thing in this business. It's like trying to show someone how to force follow the cue ball after contacting an object ball and making the cue ball go 2 times the length of the table with the amount of spin you can put on the cue ball...if you stroke it right...only problem is...you FORGOT to teach the student how to HOLD the cue stick, how to stand, how to bridge the cue....and everything else that it takes to make that follow shot! New ideas mean nothing, if the basic principals of being a mechanic are so distorted that almost no 2 mechanics can turn out the same kind of results on the SAME table! I'm interested in the IDEA of creating basic trained mechanics that the CUSTOMERS have the confidants in to call upon to work on their pool table(s) knowing they're going to get what they pay for, as it is, there's no amount of pay that can guarantee a good job on any table...that's all up to the individual mechanic doing the work. Believe me John...it IS a NEW idea to bring mechanics together to be on the same page, as that's the only way to straighten out this industry...period! What good does it do to show anyone how to shortcut tightening the pockets on a table...if they can't recover the rails or bed, or even level the table right? To tell you the truth, all you're doing is showing a hack how to shortcut the job, instead of showing them how to do it the right way first! Then, on top of all that, you said you did it for $50 or the next time you were going to charge $50.00...I consider that a loss of income, because of the fact that doing it the right way pays $500 plus materials...because its the right way of doing the job!

With all do respect to John. It looks like he does top notch work on Anitques, but is he really in the same league as Glen when it comes to performance???

Corner ext, Pockets tight, just below 4.5.

Your style of rail extinstion are interesting I like and I dont like them. I like the ext. for table onwers on a budget or are real pool players ie just bangers. The reason why is one If you play one pocket the ball wont react right off the rail the first 5/8" by the facing the other is the facing you use are honestly junk to stiff and crumble over time I know I used to use them all the time and I learned not to use them.

Your idea I still think is nice if its a new table and just want it tighter and like I said before just bangers. In wich case its 2 thumbs up great input and i Thank you for the idea and picture.

Your tack strip idea Looks better then I expected but not for me not tournament quality i wouldnt put my name on a table job after doing that right now needs alot more refinement for now.

Your ideas seem more short cut and simpler to solve a problem diffently not hack work at all but a great new idea on how to solve delima we all run into in this business.

Have to almost seperate type of table guys that think they can touch a quality made table. feel fee to add to the list of type of workers.

7. assembler
6. hack
5. installer
4. technician
3. mechanic
2. tournament quality mechanic
1. grand master craftsman

I may have run off alittle but without contributing ideas and knowledge to everyone we would all be ...........

Update on extensions per Glen request :-) . Extensions perfect. Sad to say there was too much tension I guess for the carpet tape in the corner over time. It failed, I failed, I fixed it.( I think it was giving me the finger when I showed up) This as I said before is a rail extension not a cushion replacement as those come out a bit better. You could not tell the difference with cloth on. Those of you who are techs know this is not easy.
