over 60 years of playing pool

I would much rather have all of your pool wisdom and pool experience. I think you can learn everything you need to be great just the way you did, in instructor only helps to speed the process up. You cannot buy all of the experience someone like yourself has for any price.:)

I would tend to agree with this.

But there is one thing that I see that is a bit of give & take.

For every shot that one hits doing a drill based on instruction that's one shot of real experience that one is not getting.

Learning something from a rail bird, other players, or paid instructor is one thing.

Doing hours, weeks, months, & even years of drills taught by a paid instructor is something of a different nature all together.

Like you say you just can not buy certain experience.

All Best Wishes for ALL.

That is so absurd it is mind boggling.

everyone is different and everyone learns in different ways.

some people never learn anything....no matter how much help they get,
and some people are born with natural talent....and never need help to be great

there is no one size fits all answer here......

OTOH, I think being around a champion player/gambler is the best way to learn. I've had bca instructors try to tell me and other people complete nonsense, and even after showing them they are wrong they still insist they are right.
I would rather learn from someobe who "can" as opposed to someone who "teaches"
Jason

Btw, I was not taking a lesson from this person

I used to go to a poolroom in a small town, there was a young man that I took a liking to, who asked me to teach him one pocket.
Whenever none of my games was there , I would play him.
I taught him one shot, one move at a time, and discussed options, and the theory of why, or why not, to shoot it that way for over a year, and raised his game about 4 balls.
One day I walked in, the kid had his back to me, and there were several guys facing him, one asked how he got so much better so fast .
He could not beat anybody in the room when we started.
Now there were only maybe 4 or 5 people he couldn't beat out of 70.
The dumb ass said," I'm self taught!"
That's the same answer you get from a lot of pool players.
That doesn't mean it is true.

So easily they forget................

Unfortunately, that response by the ungrateful pup is not that uncommon if you stay around long enough.

of course that happens, but just about everyone ive helped a good bit never failed to menitnon the helpthey got from myself.

I was self taught for many years....dad my uncle and grandpa just gave me a cue said go play.....few real basic things....all solid shooters in their own right, all big table players.

When my dad was in california in the late 80s and ealy 90s......went to pool hall full of bar boxes he said....went to find a 9 ball game......wait what the F is this ball in hand crap?

lmfao my pops and family kinda of grew up in cajun tatooine....poor bastard didn't even know there was something besides push out at that time.....like my friends say thought....no matter where i been, i still got rocks between my toes from were i grew up lol

i grew up playing push out with my father, uncle and grandpa. When i went to college the "black" bar where all the best players were at....thats how we played there....i fit right in....just me and that old doctor....only two crackers in the joint on days that weren't "white" night lmfao when the bands came in and played the blues.

ol doc passed away.....good fella he was, miss that old man :sorry:

anyways....i was basicallly self taught about 3/4 of the way. When i went to gradys event in 04 and met ray martin and dave matlock.....thats when i started amassing the rest along with more of my own personal figurings and such too.

So i've def donetons on my own, when you and i first played joey when i was 17 that was 2002...fall of. if your not counting the 99critical shots in pool which was the only book i ever had since iwas about 10 if im not mistaken.

as such i've gotten tons of help in the past what 14 years. and i never fail to be proud to say it....to anyone.

just like wiith the cues...lots told me to f off...and a few really helped a keeb...and thoi cant say whom....this summer i should be in the shop of a very very very respected high end maker....if i ever get the ok to say whom....hell i scream that from that 527ft tall mountaain named driskill in north louisiana lol :)

dont ever forget where ya came from, and who helped you along the way.....most of us would be nothing if someone had put the mitzfa on us.

We are kinda fortunate to hear from Billy Stroud concerning pool
Here is a pretty good cue maker who was a very good pool player and hustler

( comparatively speakin)

I hope that those with only a fraction of his ability, and experience do not chase him off.

When it comes to pool hustling,Billy is ...well let SVB and all his group come over and match up

,when the smoke clears I will be very surprised if Billy doesn't have all the money

And if just everyday players want to play,I pity them

I am doing us all a favor when I encourage Billy to offer some more advice or stories.
On this subject,Billy is the real deal

I can say this because he is banned from ever playing me,I am afraid to ask him for the nuts

And it's not because Im bashful

If you doubt me ask jackpot

Wasting your time? :killingme::killingme::killingme::killingme::
I re-thought what I wrote not to insult you professor. A practice drill/shot is a wasted shot??? I owe you a case of beer for that. Thanks for the laugh. I'm trolling you?:killingme::killingme::killingme: You have a great sense of humor....
Best2ya

Yes that is exactly what you were doing then just as you are doing here. You have never minded insulting me in the past.

I Never said that a practice/drill shot was a waste of time. You have the same problem with a certain commandment or reading issues as a couple of others.

I said that for every one of them a real life playing shot is perhaps lost.

The point being that eventually one has to stop doing drills & learn how to actually PLAY the game & not how to do drills.

There is no substitute for actually playing the game & THAT is the only way to LEARN HOW to actually PLAY the Game.

Best Wishes for ALL.

Practice drills and take them to the game? How's that sequence.

I was asked by an instructor 'here' if I knew the difference between focused practice & practice playing.

I do & I would recommend playing practice over doing drills.

Naturally if one has a certain issue then one has to work that issue out, but once that is done... practice playing if one can not actually play.

All Best Wishes for ALL.

Dean,

Lots of stories before cue making.

But there was a time when I was making cues in Tulsa and still playing some pool.

There was a young player in Duncan, OK that had one of my cues. Danny was his name. I heard he was beating all comers on the bar table and had won a great deal of money. I was real busy with the cues at the time but he called me and said he was sending his cue in for new tips.

He had never seen me and the day I got his cue I went to Duncan.
I got all the money of course. Never told him my name.

Some day I hope The Forum opens a Cue-Makers Section.......and it should be alphabetically arranged for living, retired and deceased cue-makers.
Only photos of cues made by the cue-maker are allowed to be added to his section.......example, all Richard Black cues only, Frank Paradise cues only, etc.

That would be such a cool thing and I know that the cues under Bill Stroud's name would turn out to compete head to head with the best of the best. I regret
selling the JW cues I've owned and the pickings are slim around these parts for locating another iv jt JW under 19 ozs. so I just get to admire what others own.

please a little request

would you guys that want to interact with each other please post somewhere else or start your own thread

i will gladly not post on yours unless on subject

petty remarks wear me out
we have an opportunity to hear from one of the really colorful characters of the sport
a very good player whohas won many times under the gun

i have some good friends who are top rated pool cue makers who don't post because of you guys who spout off about things you know nothing about

if you think people are interested in what you have to say
start a post and find out,you may be right

i merely ask a favor

my contacts over the years might become active and who knows
the rest of us could learn or enjoy

no offense meant, please speak to the theme or start your own

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

I hope ALL will honor your request but I think it should pointed out that it was taken off topic in post #11 after I merely posted a Thumbs Up to Bavafongoul's post to with a relative comment a brief story about Ben Hogan.
