Right on, JAM. His US Open win gave him what I'm sure is supreme confidence in his abilities, and you could tell he'd truly come of age when he turned in such a solid performance in the Mosconi Cup. Looks like Gabe will have to be reckoned with for a long time. A nice story.

Jimminy Crickets, that was quick! They must have utilized the 30-second shot clock for that match! ;)

Corey and Danny? Corey's got an ax to grind with Danny Basavich, after Danny left him benched the duration of the semi-finals at Glass City Open. Danny, though, won't give up and will fight to the bitter end.

Gotta go with the Kid Delicious on this one!

Next update: Basavich over Owen 7-3. Danny vs Corey in the finals.

I know it has to be because of TV that the format changed from race to 11 to the race to 7, BUT, I still think it kinda sux! That's much to short of a race, to decide a championship!

IMHO, if the tournaments were 20 ahead, and all the money on earth rested upon the matches, the Philippines would be a new "super power"!

;) that shoud start some controversy!

Owen was ahead of Efren 6-4 and Efren caught him on the hill. Efren 3-fouled Owen to get on the hill. With Efren breaking, Owen looked done. Efren made a ball on the break but was hooked on the one. Efren massed and almost made the 1-ball and hooked Owen. A safety battle then ensued. Owen escaped by kicking to side rail, to the end rail with some spin and made the 1-ball. The crowd went wild. Owen ran out for the win. Great tv match. I think the battle took a lot of Owen as he lost to Basavitch in the losers' side finals.
Here's the pic of the venue. Mike Massey and Ewa Laurance are in the front row .

Btw, Ring Magazine recognized world featherweight champion Manny Pacquiao dropped by to show support for Efren.
Manny later delighted a small crowd by the practice table by performing a trick shot. Manny play and supports pool. He promotes pool tournaments in the Philippines. Unlike pool players, Pacquiao makes a good living. He is signed for two fights by HBO for around $2.6 million dollars this year.

Last year I was in the Philippines visiting my Fiance and was fortunate enough to also meet Ed Reyes, Linds and most all of the top pros in the PI. Ed (aka Bandido, in the forum) and Linds were putting on a Ladies Pro tournament in the Mega Mall, followed by a Men's Pro Event in the same venue. They were very kind and helpful to me and gave me the VIP treatment! Part of the show included a challange match between Manny P and one of the Filipino soap opera stars, who's name escapes me. Manny could obviously play a little, and won pretty easily. He's a great fighter and a HERO back in the PI! As is Efren! They have "Michael Jordan" status in their country! The people of the Philippines are extremely supportive of their champions!

So do think any of the PI are going top win the dcc ? and i like for Danny to run over Cory D. just kid D is a great player ..And a very nice guy ....

True that Sherm.
Here is Manny trying his buddy Efren's cue.
Manny's curfew is 8 PM so it might be hard to set him up against Efren at HT for some rotation games before Efren flies to DCC this Thursday.

There are at least 10 Filipinos who are a threat to win ANY tournament they enter! Short races are a big equalizer though! I hope I draw Efren in the One Hole! My fiance's family would really get a kick out of that!

Sherm, I hope you do.
Just tell Efren, have some adobo, fried fish and hot vinegar, if he lets you win a game. :D

Deule wins 7-6 over Basavich. Hill-hill is good for TV, buts that's sure a short match for the championship. RJ

Has Corey given up on his PGA aspirations and returned to pool fulltime?

Today I was treated to some world class pool. The first match between Corey and Danny was AMAZING. The whole set was a break and run fest. Danny would break and run, then Corey, and they did that until about halfway thru, where Corey ran a rack on Danny's break, and then they both continued to break and run, then with Corey in front by one game. Corey and Danny were playing so good, I don't think anyone in the world could have beaten them. The finals was the same thing for a few games, but this time with more variation. There were quite a few spectacular safety battles, with both players executing tough jump shots, getting safe again, a kick, then another jump, until someone sold out. Corey was up 4-1, but one missed ball by Corey let Danny win 3 games in a row. Danny then took the lead at 6 (hill)-5, when Danny missed the 6 ball but left Corey hooked behind the 7, the 6 hanging in the corner pocket, and the cueball on the other side of the table almost frozen against the end rail. Instead of going rail first, Corey executed a great jump shot with draw, and he juiced the cueball up so much it drew back down table and clipped the 9, and it dropped in the side pocket. In the last game, they had a great safety battle, until Danny got a lucky roll after using his jump cue but left Corey safe. Corey sold out a tough but makeable cut to Danny, which he made, and he ran down to the 8-ball, but left himself a very tough angle to negotiate position. Danny was on the rail, but he had to make the 8 on the thick side of the pocket to get shape. Danny instead hit the ball way to thin and left it hanging in the hole for Corey, and Corey got out. I felt sorry for Danny because he dogged it, but at the same time, i felt Corey was more deserving of the win because he was on the winners side, and yet they had to make the final match a stupid single-elimination race to 7, basically giving Corey no reward for being undefeated. If Danny continues to play like this, he is going to be the next Mike Sigel of 9-ball. He is a class act, a great character for TV, and an asset to pool, and so is Corey. Danny really shocked the crowds with his impressive wins over so many top players. I think Danny must have missed 5 balls the entire tournament. Watch out for this guy, he's going to be dominating everything real soon.

He used to be New Jersey's best kept secret until the last couple of years. Even though he is having a breakout year, his success is no surprise to anyone who has known him for a few years or more. Great talent and great work ethic. This guy always was the real deal.

Eric >happy to see a local guy do good
