Philippine Open

I would be shocked, shocked if this event doesn't return. It's been electric. The crowds at times seem to have swelled up to 500. Or even more.

Does the format need a change? Dunno. Maybe it's a good format for this event in that particular mall. Doesn't seem like it could hold a full 256-player open with double elimination.

If the format stays pretty much the same, the only think I would change is make the first round races to 11.

surely over a thousand when alcaide played jaybee. it was packed

Will have to be double elimination and better payouts if it’s going to attract more high level players from abroad. I am sure they can find an arena to host a full double elimination tournament.

They need to do something about the NS. Maybe establish a waiting list and require payments way up front.
The Philippines definitely has the capability to host the best Open because you generally rely on a lot of locals to fill up spots and there is nowhere better in the world than the Philippines to have competitive matches from start to end.

They should also encourage women to play. Also get sponsors so you can reduce entry fee for both players (maybe lesser fee for the non-established locals) and spectators.

I wouldn’t change a single thing about the venue, format, etc. Having a packed house cheering on the locals vs the international players is what makes this event so good.

The only thing I would change is have the camera crews show the crowd better, and much more frequently. Also have camera crews in the crowd looking down at the tables.

After decades of pool being a stale sport, the key ingredient is a roaring crowd. The crowd should be made the star by Emily.

Agreed, the crowd participation is what will help pool grow.

If I've never seen pro pool before and I see a suggested video on YouTube with 2 people playing and a thousand people watching and cheering, I would most certainly keep watching. The optics of fans being on the balcony above the tables and being so close to the players at the ground level is incredible. I got hyped just watching them cheer for Jaybee, even David Alcaide started smiling and laughing, even though he started the match super serious in the beginning. The crowd is the key.

Tbf, it's in a shopping mall yet it has attracted a number of international players from abroad and some of them have gone deep. I think it's amazing, and I hope it's here to stay. The only thing missing is Tiffany.

Who came in other than those already there. Maybe less than 10 or possibly 5. I am talking about real contenders, Oi, Grabe, Robbie etc.

Oi, Grab and Robbie for starters. I'm still not sure what your point is though as they were already there or thereabouts.

A single elimination tournament is surely "good value" for elite players who happen to be around?

Already there in terms of expense not tournament format.

The biggest names to attend who did not play in the Reyes are

Alcaide
Grabe
Mario He
Pijus Labutis
Oi
Souto
Capito

The question is, who else would have attended if Qatar wasn't taking close so close to the Manilla event. The Qatar event was announced much earlier and has one the biggest top prizes in pool at $100,000.

100%

and i know my first post said this event would bounce big name pros by design, but i've been highly entertained by the filipino players, not least jaybee. that match was a riot!

Yes indeed. Do you think double elimination would have been a winning format in terms of adding big name players to this particular tournament?
Yes. I would guess that's the way it is going to be next year, with Cutec and other big sponsors on board. This was just a test of the market and interest for the locals.

My guess is no. The poor turnout of the game’s most elite is, I believe, mostly due to the schedule clash with Qatar. To Matchroom’s credit, this is an event featuring some very fine pool and I don’t think single elimination scared more than a few away. Manila might just be the world capital of pool and I couldn’t be happier for both the Filipino fans and players that Matchroom has added this event.

Logistics made single elimination appropriate here, but the quality of the event, to me, is beyond contestation, and all at Matchroom can take a deep bow for what is proving to be an exceptional event.

Gorst breaks dry. Busty runs all the balls and misses the easiest 8 he's had all match. Gorst makes the 8 and misses the 9!!!

Busty drills a long distance 9 for the win!
You must focus on every shot on these Rasson tables. Any error and the pockets will reject the ball. Great tables and a suitable test for these top players.
