Phillipino dominance?

At 8:30 in the morning, it was the other guy who had the cash, and the bet had increased to 12 000 $.

Then they started another set, had been playing 6 sets, all race to 13, but you had to win with 2 games...

I was so tired, been at One Side for 16 hours, so I had to move on. Don't know who won, but guess they broke even...

Money changers abound on Mabini St. but beware! Some are scam artists. They offer a good rate, in this case 50p per dollar. I give the lady a $100 bill and she counts out ten 500p notes. I go to pick them up but she picks them up to hand to me. Hmmm.

I see her hide one note under her pinky, a quick and deceptive little move. She is attempting to give me 9500 and not 10000. A $10 ripoff. I catch her tho and grab ALL the money. I have nine 500p notes and the $100 bill now. If it is in the U.S., I will take it all and leave. My attitude is that a thief is fair game for the consequences. But here I hestitate. She has a young man who is standing behind me while argue with her over the money.

Here I am warned watch out for the knife, because the thieves all carry them. I watch him out of the corner of my eye. He keeps his distance. I am unarmed but prepared if he makes a move. I finally get all ten 500p notes and let go of the $100. My GF and I leave. I am a little wiser now. Not everyone has good intentions in Manila. So be warned.

Hey Jay! Your GF didn't warn you about this scam? I guess the lady needs more practice!

Just watch your back there Jay, they will try to get you next time, by hook
or by crook. They call this kind of hustle "kotong". And once you got your
money, there will be a lot of grifters keeping an eye on you like vultures
circling their prey. So try not to be predictable, go to some other money
changers and keep them guessing. I'm serious as a heart attack...

I usually go to SM or the Banco De Oro. They have Forex rates. Safer, secure and no "10% discount".

I get the drift now. Manila is the mecca.

"Any good push from the goverment or sponsors to send more Chinese to tournaments abroad?"
Like every other country, chinese politicians won't recognise pool as a bona-fide sport and as for sponsors, I don't think thats happening. Colin Colenso in Shanghai had a beer sponsor for his comptetitions that he organised but I don't know any mainlander has sponsors.
Its just not seen as a sport. The Ice Queen probably does alright.
I've read everything in this thread and enjoy it tremendously.

What Manny is doing there? Should he be courting the voters now? Oh well, sometimes popularity gets to you, and you start to think you can do everything. I just hope he practice well for In Jin Chin. His fight in Macau is almost up.

Jay or Bandido,
Any insight about Ronnie Alcano no longer his sponsored player?

Macau's off, the In Jin Chi fight is no longer on. It's Texas against TBA for Manny.

watch out for your pockets. thieves in the philippines would slash them if they know you've got some money, especially seeing that you're a foreigner.

also, most of them don't travel alone, so if it's just a small amount, just let it go. you'll never know if they've got a couple of back ups watching you.

. . . bring one of those reels with numbered tickets on them so the throng of crowd will have some order when you yell out the numbers. They'd much rather prefer to play rotation than anything else. It's more challenging and fun for them.

You're saying that with the numbered tickets the gamblers can double their pleasure?

Having fun in that warm Manila sun. My sweet little GF is here with me at City States Towers on Mabini street, only three blocks from One Side. We visited her family in Pasay City, so they can approve me. We play basketball there and walk to neighborhood poolroom with two very funky old tables.

The owner apologizes and I say no problem. It is still pool, only a little more challenging. You must hit the ball firm to avoid the rolls, but the banks all work and I slam a few in to their delight. I play all the neighborhood kids a game of 8-Ball. I win every game, so I am now the neighborhood champ. Haha.

Mikaela's brother (19 yr. old) loves pool and he is happy to watch. I promise to play with him another day. Handsome young lad with wife and 4 month old baby.
I send this to make sure it works.

Keep them coming, Jay.
Your posts keep me in the game. I want to be there for the WHOLE journey!
Thanks,
JoeyA

Thanks. I'm watching back, front and sideways. I got good training in pool halls around America.

Ronnie just signed a major deal with Guinness. They gave him something like a
200000p signing bonus.

And the war of beers continue . . . It's funny US beer makers aren't keen to this considering most pool games in America are played in a bar.

I think that while the Filipinos may be dominant now, pretty soon another country would dominate, especially after Efren retires. Pool players from other countries would emulate and try to learn from the best and adapt their methods.

The US dominated basketball, reached its peak during the Jordan-era, but now is no longer considered the best country in the sport as more and more foreigners have adopted the game as their own and have thrived and added their own style of play.

If the U.S. no longer has the best basketball in the world, who does?

I think US Dream Team only came in 3rd last Summer Olympics.
And also bowed down to Japan and South America in the recent World Cup of Baseball (not so sure about the exact title).

Basketball - I think US is still the dominant country. Those damn spoiled brats in the NBA just don't care enough about the Olympics. However, no country can really match the depth of talent in the US.
Baseball - I have to give this to South America.
Pool - Philippines (I just have to put that in -- he-he-he)
