So i posted a thread about story telling. Not sure how the mods feel about it, but i figure ill post my story here.

After work i went over to my uncle's house to hang out in his man-cave. sure enough one of his buddy's come over and shoot the ___ with us

Eventually the conversation of pool comes up. My uncle's buddy by the name of T speaks upon his skill in 8 ball (which is the main game we play outside of straight pool). lots of trash talk starts and T says "I got my stick in my trunk, i take it with me every were i go!! we can go play right now!!"
I told him lets go! and me my uncle my cousin and his friend T head to the tavern.
As soon as we get there i play my cousin and T and my uncle play. I win my game and my uncle beats T.
I walk over to the winner table and beat my uncle. T see's my game and pulls out his stick, i go check it out and it is a very nice lucasi. Game starts, i break and nothing falls :frown:. he takes the next shot and knocks in the 8 ball on his first shot.
lol "you suck" is what i told him. come on unc lets play again. I once again beat my uncle and now its T's turn to play me again. this time i break and knock down a stripe and a solid. i got for the solids and knock down 4 balls straight. the placement of my cue ball was off by a couple inches and i missed my 5th shot. T gets on the table and runs 3 balls. on his 4th shot he once again knocks in the 8 ball.
"your garbage buddy, get off the table lol" and of course what do i hear?
whats the most classic reason someone gives for loosing a game in pool??

"I beat myself" I'm like, cmon T! can i get some credit here? T says "Not until you beat me, you have not beat me yet! i beat myself"

I then tell em that great players have enough ball control not to scratch the 8 ball, a loss is a loss. no worries, i would have run my next 3 balls and 8 ball out regardless.

Now T wont let up, he continues to talk about how good he is and how lucky i am. sore looser!

T says "put up some money" I tell him im broke, dont have money to bet with. My uncle gladly accepts his bet.

T wins the next 3 games in a row, just barely but he wins. now i'm hearing from him "Listen, i'm the best you ever seen. when you put up money its a whole different story. if you think of the 5 best players in the world, your lookin at one of em!"

 gimme a break T i see your game, your not as good as me and i'm not even close to my dads level in his prime. so you pretty much suck.

My uncle ups the bet and comes back to beat T 3 games in a row.
My uncle says to him "listen man, your garbage, i see your game and your garbage"
My uncle then puts up the money for me to play him and he tells us he has to go pick up his children. I must admit during our entire venture he was constantly on the phone speaking to his wife as if he had to do something, so i do believe him.

I had 3 more games later on today and won all 3. much better than yesterday when i only won 1 of 3. today i am 8-0

8ball is the game. But one thing i hate, i mean a pet peeve of mine, is someone saying they beat themselves and will not admit defeat.

8ball is the game. But one thing i hate, i mean a pet peeve of mine, is someone saying they beat themselves and will not admit defeat.

My understanding is when some one say they beat themselves they are probably highlight the fact that they dogged / missed some critical shots, the shots that they would make on any day at any given time. But, not accepting defeat or accepting the fact that the other player beat you is just not right. Here is my story of where i "beat myself".
I was playing this guy 9 ball / race to 7 on bar box for a C note. I was giving him 4 on the wire and thought that i could win that game. Well, he made a fluke 9 ball combo in the first game, so now score was 5 -0 him breaking. He breaks and make a 9 ball on the break, so the score is 6 -0 him breaking again. Now as he breaks he flew the cue ball out of the table and i got ball in hand with an easy runout pattern. So, now its 6 - 1.
Now, I am thinking this guy has a pretty good chance to beat me. The feeling that I had before the game that i could win is long gone. Well somehow I got rolling and got to the hill, so now its 6 - 6 and i am breaking. I broke made nothing, the guy runs out 1,2 and 3 and got hooked for the shot on 4, try to kick and fouled. I am like that's good now i am gonna win cuz i can run this out with BIH. It all came down to a nice and easy 8 ball shot with a slight cut on top left corner pocket for the shape for the 9 (which was a diamond away from bottom right corner pocket). I got down thought in my mind that this is it and its over, i win, single stroke the shot and dogged the 8 ball like i had no eyes. Now, my opponent gets up with a big smile (which is fine with me) and shoots the 8 ball but doesn't get the perfect shape (the cue ball end up on the second diamond from top left corner pocket kinda close to the rail) on the 9 ball. He is now looking at either a cut shot or a bank cross corner, and i am thinking he might miss this. I didn't know what he was gonna do bank or cut ?? so he takes a good look at this 9, shoots it hard and so bad that he kicked behind the 9 ball and it went 2 rails to the side pocket.

I shook his hand, gave him the money and said "good shooting". And he is like oh you wana do it again ? And i politely declined. Not because I was mad at him for slopping that last 9 ball but because of the fact that i was so disgusted on myself on missing the previous 8 ball. It is a really bad bad feeling, and at that moment you can't do nothing to change it. So, I think i beat my self in that game by doing what i was NOT suppose to do (this involves rushing on my shots, being drunk, not going round the table to look for easy patterns and other mistakes). But, that's the part of the game and everybody gotta learn on how to deal with it.

Dont get me wrong, i know how it feels. but i mean at the end of the day. as long as all shots were called and legal, he beat you. I've felt like i beat myself many times. but just as you did, i still give the guy credit. this guy wouldnt give me my credit for nothing.

Besides "I beat myself" I hate when you say "good game" and they say "not really". Especially when they win.

Like saying "yeah, I wasn't really playing well but I beat you anyway, so that's how much you suck."

Or "yeah, for you that was a good game. For me it was just another average pool match. I guess amateur shit like that excites you."

Ha! That "cool story bro" stuff cracked me up.

If the guy's saying he's unstoppable and that you just got lucky.. just agree with him!

I played a guy last week that shot pretty well. I was shooting decently, but I don't think I broke n ran a single rack the entire night - not including early combos. He later went on to explain that I wouldn't beat him again and that I got lucky. Lucky enough that he had to win it back with a spot after the first two sets. Either way, I just played along and am really looking forward to seeing him in another 7 months.

Remember.. he's good, you're "lucky". Flip it!
