Player Selection for First IPT Tournament

I've been following the IPT news, hoping to gain an understanding of how this organization is going to unfold.

Yesterday, I got a message on my answering machine from Kevin Trudeau's secretary. I wasted no time in calling her back, and here's the skinny.

The first tournament will be held in Orlando beginning in late November. It will be restricted to 43 players; thus, an invitational.

Ten out of the 43 players will be Hall of Famers for the FIRST event. The remaining 33 participants will be chosen by Kevin Trudeau himself and nobody else, and the decision on who the 33 remaining players has not been made as of this time.

There's the skinny. :p

I heard that Ronnie O'Sullivan will be joining that tournament too.

Good luck to him,and the rest of the competitors :D

I think at this juncture, the players who apply for membership in the IPT will be accepted into the tour. Acceptance into the IPT as a member of the tour does not mean a player will be participating in the FIRST IPT event which will be held at the end of November in Orlando.

The 10 Hall of Famers are already confirmed, though, as participants in the FIRST tournament, which is in reality an invitational consisting of 43 players.

I was told by Kevin Trudeau's secretary that the decision as to who the 33 out of 43 participants has not been made yet, and when it is decided, it will be Kevin Trudeau who makes the decision and nobody else.

BTW, women are welcome to join the IPT.

43 players sounds like a small number if you take into account the money that's up for the winner ($200,000).

I'm sure that for that kind of money they would have been able to get many more than 43 paying participants. Of course, the way they have it set up now we'll get plenty of threads discussing why a certain player was left out and the like...

Players ...

43 is such an odd number. Why not 48 or 64, which
are better suited for tournament play?

Trudeau is abandoning the single/double elimination tournament format for a round robin system, and then like the PGA, there is a cut thru the week to whittle down the field.

There seems to be a little too much emphasis on Trudeau's choice. Lets wait and see what international players are chosen. ;)

Isn't it 43 plus hall of famers? How many Hall of Famers are there that are able to play?

I heard from a former US Open Champion that in the first event, they will play down to one player and then that player will play Mike Sigel for the Championship!! Believe it or Not!

I heard the same, Nostroke, though I'm not 100% sure whether that methodology will kick in on the first event. I also heard there will be some other pre-arranged byes. Still, I can't confirm it.

Hi, Pete.

No. It is 43 players in total. As I stated above in the earlier post, there will be 10 Hall of Famers and 33 "invited" players. The total participants in the first event is 43. The 43-player total will include the 10 Hall of Famers.

I have not heard that the winner of this first event will have to play Mike Sigel in order to win the whole tournament. Not saying it is not so, but truth be told, there have been a lot of rumors going around relating to the IPT. I was very pleased to speak to someone who is actually affiliated with the tour and ask questions and receive answers. :p

The 43 man field (seem a little odd?) and the fact that the first tournament is being billed as "King of the Hill" lends a little credence to the 'Sigel' format scenario. I wouldnt bet my life on it but id bet something. :)

I wouldn't be surprised if this was the way it goes. I also bet Sigel will be a "trusted advisor", as to who is invited! Not that there's anything wrong with that, but I think Sigel picks his spots pretty well and will end up with most of the money given away by Trudeau. The good thing is that the scraps are much better than the pro's are used to fighting for, if the pro's who have a chance of winning, are allowed to play!
I still hold high hopes that the IPT will be a great boost for pool! Trudeau obviously knows how to sell a product, so I'm optomistic about his chances to give pool a boost. I just wish he'd hook up with someone like Greg Sullivan, instead of Mike Sigel. Someone who's more interested in the sport than his own interests!

just more hot air!

I should have read ALL posts. I now see what you had said earlier.

Only way i see 43 players, is if there are 7 groups of 6 that do that round robin stuff, and then maybe top 2 from each group gets to advance.
I would assume that the extra man, is Mike Sigel waiting for the winner, IF that's somewhat close to the format they are going to use.

Still a bunch of B.S if you ask me, regardless of how much money is given away.
Only reason Sigel is the chosen one, is cause he's his friend.

It reminds me of how most of the wealth in this country is delegated, and it's not how smart you are or how good you are, or how many college degree's you get, it's WHO you know.

any word on total purse distribution?

I have read a lot about the IPT but not every word by any means. Have they ever given a breakdown on how the total purse will be paid?

Who thinks boxing promoters care two hoots about who the best boxers are. They care who is the most marketable. The don't worry about spending half their dosh on the also rans, they pick the cheese that brings the ratings. Only an idiot boxing promoter would try to run a boxing tourney.

So if KT runs a limited tourney, or fixes it so that the winner plays Mike, then he could well be making a smart business decision.

It would certainly not make a lot of sense to copy existing methods at this point, after they have failed many times to attract mainstream audiences.

Personally, I am pleased that the 10 Hall of Famers are being "invited." :)

In these times, the veteran and seasoned pros who are Hall of Famers do not reap very much benefit in the way of monies (IMO). I like seeing the legends like Buddy Hall being afforded this golden opportunity, and one thing for sure, Buddy Hall's stroke will definitely be strong on that slower cloth.

At this stage, I do not understand the format clearly. I was told by Kevin Trudeau's secretary that every single person who has been accepted into the IPT will be welcome to attend the Orlando event and see firsthand how it will unfold as there will be a players meeting at that time for EVERY member.

So the IPT members who did not get "invited" to the FIRST invitational event are urged to come to Orlando and hear it from the promoters what this tour is truly all about.

I'm still in a wait-and-see stance and hoping that the IPT will be a change agent for the game/sport.
