Players not being paid at US Open

Terry - Swinging beside Chris.

LOL... Do you guys have room for one more?

I'm sure Jay had no idea that this would come about.
If the OP is right, (I have no reason to doubt him) the
future of the US Open will be shakier than ever.

I hope everyone is paid in full and all ends well, but
stalling and delaying while people need to be paid
so they can leave (catch flights, etc.) is pure BS.

No one has stated where Barry is going wrong? Is it because the promoters aren't paying up front? Is it because there is corruption afoot.

Is Barry misappropriating funds? Maybe he is doing everything he can but there are things that are past his control? Maybe not?

Does anybody know what is actually happening?

He's waiting on the take..

He;s banking on the take from seating and concessions... IOW, he's over extending himself on the guaranteed monies amount...

CSI should schedule a big tournament overlapping this event and call it "The Real US Open"!

F BB!

I would bet if Barry gave away the US Open name to CSI, Diamond, Mike Zuglan or Allen Hopkins (The four promoters left in the US) none of them would do anything remotely close to what the past Opens have been.

Why? Because they don't hate money and they have no emotional attachment to the Open. You might see a $25K added 128 man field tops and that would be a long shot.

As screwed up as the Open has become you cant take it away from Barry that no one else in the game could do what he has done with the event. Mainly because no one else would do what Barry has had to in order to keep it going. But as much as it saddens me to see the crown jewel event in the US decline I respect the fact that long after anyone else would of called it a wrap Barry keeps fighting.

I think it will be better for pool when Barry either stops his antics with pay or the Open changes hands but I have a sneaking suspicion that we will not see anymore of the 200+ fields with big money added anymore.

He's mis-setting expectations, betting on the come and his overly optimistic hopes don't become reality. One time, he could be forgiven. But history keeps repeating itself and he doesn't do anything different. Pathetic and embarrassing.

Pure speculation:

The US Open is a big money losing event. It is not self sustainable. In the 90's, the economy was great, and Barry had something like 4 or 5 big pool rooms that were making hand over fist. The profit from these rooms paid for the US Open.

Then in the early 2000's till now, the economy has gone bust, and ESPECIALLY the pool economy has been hurt even more than the broader economy. He's now down to one pool room. That one pool room does not have enough profit to pay for the US Open today or for the past several years.

This is my educated guess, I have no first hand knowledge to back it up.

My opinion is you have to spend some time around Barry to understand it.

He is the type of guy who jumps out of a plane without a parachute because he's confident he can figure it out on the way.

The US Open 9 Ball is the manifestation of Barry's ego for all the world to see. Of course he could cut the added money in half and get pretty much the same field but thats just not what Barry does. Better to shoot for the moon and fall short than go for the easy option and just run a solid event.

Some people just thrive on chaos and being in the weeds. My experience around Barry leads me to believe thats him in a nutshell. If it wasnt this shit wouldnt keep happening.

Don't the past champions get a pass on the entry fee?? Barry has said that a while back, there are some past champion playing, I'm sure that takes a good hit on the prize fund!

No, Barry discontinued that 2 years ago after Johnny Archer and the then, so-called "male pro governing organization" -- what ever happened to the ABP (Association of Billiard Professionals)? -- demanded Barry place all funds beforehand in escrow.

There are no free entries, unless Barry is giving them to a select few, which he has been known to do from time to time, to his credit. :)

I remember in 2003 when Keith came in third place, we stayed in Virginia an extra day and ran to the bank to cash the $10,000 check. When I got to the bank at 8:30 a.m., there was already a group of pool players gathered in line, waiting to cash their checks. The check was good, thank goodness.

I just cannot imagine what any of the pool players who came in 20th and above thought when they read this note about getting paid. This is outrageous. Again, I am ashamed when I think about what our international bretheren of pool players are thinking about the United States. "Disappointing" isn't even a strong enough word to express what I am feeling after learning the players who worked so hard, paid that damn $750 entry fee, incurred all the associated costs of attending a week-long tournament must be feeling this morning, the day after.

All the joy of winning is thrown out the window. This is a travesty. :frown:

What does it say at the top?

What does it say at the top?

The first two sentences, I cannot read. They are blurry. It starts out with, "By signing below, I hereby" -- and then the rest I can't see well enough.

Underneath that, it looks like players' names. I can't read all of them, but here are the ones I can ascertain:

Niels Feijan
????
John Morra
Justin Bergman
Waleed Majid
Alex Karakas
Corey Deuel
Nick van den Berg

Orcullos demeanor when Barry was talking about NOT paying right away was priceless, lmfao

i swear to god that was not the look of someone who was dissapointed at 2nd, that was the look of someone who was pissed at not getting paid on time

imagine doing as well as he did only for the promoter to say that during the championship speech

Players all funds will be cleared for you by...

Oh, the handwriting, I can read okay. I added the correct punctuation, but it says the following:

Players, all funds will be cleared for you to cash 10/28/14, not this Tuesday, but next Tuesday. Rest of U.S. Open funds by then. Thank you, Barry Behrman.

Thanks. I thought maybe my eyes were bad.

Anyone who didnt see this coming should immediately apply for a position with Bonus Ball.

72K added-Fans and sponsors bailing after years of disasters.

That's all you need to know,

How would this year be BETTER? HOW?
Gonna be the worst one ever!

Payment?

I am curious about the payment schedule. Did the players know that they would not be paid as soon as the event was concluded?

If so then there should be no complaint. But knowing pool players they want their checks now. Did someone ask Barry when the checks would be available?

Wasn't there some discussion earlier about how the money had to be handled at the U.S. Open for it to be a WPA sanctioned event?

Pretty sure Barry never planned on paying for the US Open from pool room profits. He plans on making profit from the gate and merchandise sales and vendor booth sales.

AFAIK Barry only ever had two locations.
