Players you miss

Unfortunately Bobby Pickle has been "incapacitated" for awhile now. He was fun to watch and a top notch competitor. Probably the most polite pool player I have seen play; win or lose. If anyone sees or talks to him give him best wishes for me.

A tremendous straight pool player and very good friend.
He has probably run over 100 more than anyone. For a
long time he practiced 12 hrs a day 7 days a week. He
finished second in the U,S.open to Jennings. He played
this guy at Click's a pool room in Dallas !50 no count
to 150,the guy was not helpless and was capable of
running 30 to 35 balls.Dick beat him that way and then
adjusted the game to where Dick had to run 150 no count
TWICE, and still won. For a short time he worked at
Billiard and Bar Stools, they sold Tables and stuff, they
had a table on display with one corner against a corner
of the wall,.I watched Dick run 124 with that corner and
part of the side where you couldn't even get to. His right
hand shock really bad,(like Varner only much, much worse)
I used to play him at His Condo, and all he had to sit on
were those little three leg bar stools with the seat the size
of a pancake, hard as a rock. You sit there while he runs
8 million balls, pure torture. He has become very Religious
now and does not play at all. I wish him the best and hope
that he is happy I miss him every day.

If you are reading this I know it looks goofy. I don't know
what makes it look like that after I enter it. Is there away to fix it,
I know it is hard to read.I asked Deanco, he said he thought
I was doing it on purpose, but liked it,and was thinking about
starting to do his the same way.
I've spent quite a bit of time around D. Lane. He's from Pawhuska, Ok. went to O.U. and went on to start/own Click's chain of rooms. If you know old t.v. he looks kinda like Wally Cox. A school-teacher with a cue who doesn't miss much. He used to come to Tulsa fairly often but haven't seen him in about 8-9yrs. He's worth something like $250million so pool has always been his passion/hobby. Cool guy.

Parica may have been the best player of his era and one of the best of all time. He dominated Rotation games for twenty years!

And for a minute there, Mark Tadd had everybody worried. He played with ultra confidence and wasn't afraid to challenge anyone!

Keith, we know about. Extreme talent but erratic lifestyle. When he was on he was unbeatable.

Ronnie Allen, only the past master of One Pocket. I don't think even Efren would have liked to fade Ronnie's overall attack.

The Miz - After Mosconi and Grenleaf, maybe the third best Straight Pool player ever. He ruled pro pool until Earl came along and dethroned him. Probably possessed the most powerful stroke of any pool player ever. Only Cornbread and maybe Larry Nevel and Mike Massey were close. The difference was Miz had the whole game. He could do it all on a pool table.

Swanee was always a little bit undercover and unsung. Probably the best high stakes 9-Ball player of his time, along with Buddy Hall. Swanee wouldn't flinch playing $1,000 a game 9-Ball in the 80's. The only guys I ever saw with his guts for big cash were Keith, Searcy, Buddy and Cornbread. And I'd take Swanee over all the above in the long run betting super high. He could play at the top of his game all day. They used to fly Swanee in when some local champion tried to out bet everyone. Swanee would come in and dust him off. He would come back home with his pockets stuffed with cash and party on the beach until he got another call. And generous to a fault. Loved that man!

I played a lot with Neptune Joe Frady back in the 70' and 80's.
He was a helluva player.
I miss watching and playing with him.
Sadly he is in real bad shape with Alzheimer's and Dementia.
And hes only 68 or so.

Jay, u mentioned Ronnie
Do you mean Alcano ?
If yes, mind sharing some exciting stories.
Arguably one of the smoothest and talented cueist pool has ever witnessed , effortless or smooth as butter is what I wld describe him moving whitey around.

Such a shame he wasted his talent and went downhill after his 2world titles.
More infamously known for dumping and his sexual lawsuit .
Still one of my favourite players !
Efren once said Ronnie’s kicking ability is not second to himself.
One of the rare Filipinos who cld withstand the pressure of gambling with the Taiwanese, once smoked little genie Kuo po Cheng 11-2 gambling during the 2006 world championships in Manila.
I never knew that Alcano had such a bad reputation. What are the details of these scandals?

He still plays really solid- just seems inconsistent now

Kim Shaw, Jennifer Chen, Christina de la Garza, Samm Diep, Julie Kelly, Megan Smith, Eva Lawrence, Liz Ford, Sarah Rousey, Sarah Ellerby, Anna Kostanian, Yu Ram Cha, Miyuki Sakai... damn... I can still name maybe 3 or 4!

Julie Kelley is one that I thought would make it to the top. Does she still play competitively?

My question relates to living players that never made it to the top but were very strong players and may or may not still be playing competitively. Ones that we had fewer chances to see but when we did we thought “that’s a player!”

One on the women’s side that comes to mind is Brittany Bryant.

Brittany still plays in all the bigger womens events that i see or hear about. Just about everyone who does the road thing (and she Liz and Nicole did a lot of it) eventually get worn out from it. It just isn't a viable way to live any longer.

OH my-what a shame. I spoke with him maybe 7-8 years ago at the SBE and to tell the truth, there may have been signs at that time. I introduced a straight pool player who had heard of Joe but had never met him. This fella told Joe. Im so happy to meet you, I have heard what a great player you are for so long. You are one of my heroes etc. Must have been 6-7 compliments throughout-Joe never said thank you one time. He just kept nodding his head. I was just shocked. It was very uncomfortable. Ill have to tell my buddy which may shine a different light on Joe for him. It has for me.

Jean Balukas

the only woman player i ever watched,
i did see her last match in las vegas

seemed to me she got banned for some sharking
incident which most of us never heard or saw

i don't know if the other gals could beat her now ,
but at one time she could play

i also miss seeing efren play,he was the only one that i would even watch
as i am not really a spectator type

i would like to see jersey red, ronnie allen and eddie taylor

i live a few miles from Billy Incardone, but i don't see him play anymore
or get to hear him comment on the games

in my opinion he is the best pool commentator ever, personality combined with energy
insight and flattering descriptions of the player, along with a wealth of anecdotal material

i ran into him at a cafeteria with my wife and he provided us with an afternoon of
entertainment.

i miss the friendship of Jerry Franklin more than all,Verl Horn and Jerry meant so much to
me

We all miss the greats, but lots of opportunities to see them in video or on YouTube. Those who had short runs or didn’t quite make it to the top are the ones that I miss. Maybe saw them once or twice and was really impressed. Some I know only by face.

I saw the match that got her fined...and she refused to pay it.
...the fine was not unjust and in the last few years she has wished she'd handled it better.

...she was losing to Robin Bell and acted like Earl.

I would like to see Cliff Joiner recover his health and come back to the game.
...even playing a ball and a half less would make him a good short stop.
...he had a period when he ruled.

Tang Hoa is back to playing again. I've seen him at a few Mezz West State Tour stops and the Hard Times Bellflower 1st Sunday. He just finished 2nd in the Mezz Stop at California Billiards in Fremont this past weekend.
