im sure we all do it.......why do we go out and shoot at a bar with a bunch of bums, that arent gonna do anything but bring our games down, i might be done with that scene...its just so hard to go to a bar that has a table and not play

first couple months i played, i did that. made me feel good that the work i put into my game put me in a spot to beat useless people. When I realizrd that it meant nothing, i never went back.

in the past 2 years I play A players and above, i cant remember the last time i won:confused:

When you let someone else bring your game down, you have lost and have something to learn. As in life, if you can't take away something positive, then you aren't paying attention. Use the opportunity to challenge yourself.

I agree...I stopped doing this awhile ago. Playing people I know I can beat at a bar hurts my game. Now if I go out I won't even play unless the big guns are out or I'm just going to screw around. Of course....if I played for money....that might change the issue.

i do it for the few bucks it brings in. even if you don't win much it's always an easy buck. the most i've won off non pool players on a bar is $100. the last time i played i ended up playing some guy for a dollar a game (costs .75 to play) i won 5 games before he quit. it's a free drink

bums bucks

They may be bums on the box but they may have some cheese in their
pocket and booze in their bloodstream. If they can pay my bartab I'll play
'til two. No stalling. Just open up so there is no hustle.:oink:

Found that playing weaker players, sometimes in tournament, sometimes in leagues, has helped my game. When they screw up, you expect to find the cue ball in places you would never go. When they miss, see previous statement. And they may miss and mis-play alot. It makes me concentrate harder. Play better fundamental pool. Safeties, shot choice, etc. Don't want to do it all the time but once in a while is just fine!

if you're not stalling there's no way they'll pay your whole tab. don't cheat yourself

Stall is a relative term

My game is so bad that if I stalled it would come to a screeching halt.
Check out the " pickup lines" thread

I do it for entertainment purposes. That or beat the cocky guy that doesnt know a thing about pool and steal his lady friend

speaking of bums

most of you are bums . some people in bars just play because they like to play that dont make them bums come to Pa. in are bars and unless your open speed or better you might go broke and lose your girl

If youre playing them for cash, you are better off not holding back too much, or at least not make it obvious that you are stalling to get their money. Bad things happen in bars.
If you are playing weaker players for free, then use it to work on different parts of your game that you wouldnt normally do in a money game or tournament with better players. You can work on shots you normally wouldnt/shouldnt shoot, experiment with positions routes you normally dont use and see if you find something easier than you are currently doing etc etc etc.
But the main idea is to use it as a tool to keep your game sharp, dont take it lightly and screw around because that is where your game can slip.

I completely agree...
They must live very sheltered lives... there are tons of places with players that will eat them alive.
I think they hide in the shadows and pick their spots very carefully.

spiders know other spiders

I could spot a player in a little bar a mile away. Often times I would come into a bar and if I spot a player he and I would just nod an shut up. Last man would have maybe a draft and then leave. Even if he were levels above me he would not ask me to play. That 's not what he was there for. We did this stuff for real. Two A.M. rolled around we'd head to our favorite poker club
and play 1&2 draw until Gordon's Bar opened at 6:00 A.M. The player's gathered there and played a little 9-ball ring game for a buck or two (I always lost) If there was a meet some of them would head out to Hollywood Park to gamble. This was Southbay in the 60's and early 70's We were all
speeding. Wouldn't sleep the whole weekend. Some would score big but not many. Nobody lost. We all had a little cash. We'd never lose our "case" money. The life of a small time hustler.
It was a damned fine way to spend the weekend.:thumbup:

Um. Driveby shootings are against the law, regardless of if they are bums or not....

man i had to read this a few times to get what you were saying. if i went to pa i definitely wouldn't go broke or lose my lady. the second i figure out i can't win (especially playing bar pool) i do what all reasonable players would do. i'd quit

I'm from Pittsburgh. I think this is a dialect that I recognize and I'll take a crack at translation.
Ahem... most of you (probably meaning westerners) are bums. Some people play because they like to play. That does not make them bums. Come to Pennsylvania( A seemingly cordial invitation to a beautiful state... possibly this post is from their chamber of commerce) In our bars, unless you are open speed or better, you may go broke and lose your girl.( This is a case , obviously, of a visitors desperate attempt to stay in a game and turn it around. Betting and losing your girl is one stage before the total desperation of betting and losing your stick leaving you only with your case money.)
