I found the perfect house but landlord won't let me hang pool light from the ceiling.

He suggested a floor lamp that hangs over?

Can someone help me with some ideas?

That's not a problem. Forget about the lights. This is the way to go...

Hmm, Kinda weird that he wont let you hang a light up. Will he allow you to put nails in the walls to hang paintings/etc.

maybe he's kinda paranoid about your skills with hanging the light so I would offer to either have a professional install it or pay him to install it.

House and landlord does not make sense to me... When i hear landlord i think condo/apartment.

I say forget about the house!
it could be perfect but with kind of a landlord you can just guess what's next....

That's the dumbest thing I've ever heard. You can live there, but you can't hang anything up? A landlord with rules like that would probably be a nightmare anyway. Sounds a little shady.

HEY !!! Why does it say that you're from Washington, but your avatar has a Florida theme ??????

We grow 'em big, here in Florida. I think it's all that sunshine!

Just tell him that you will put it in writing that you will pay to have the holes in the celing fixed when you leave.

Sounds to me like you never even thought about offering this common sense solution to the non problem. Throw in a paint job on the room to boot, and offer him the cash for it up front.

If you are more interested in having proper lights than you are in something that looks good you could build a frame out of lumber a few inches in from the walls and ceiling of the room to hang the light from. Your room would have to be big enough to spare the extra foot you would lose at the sides of the table.

You might try to talk to the landlord about track lighting or built in spots with a good quality dimmer switch. It can be left there for room lighting after the pool table is removed.

People rent houses in the US all the time. They are called rent houses. :grin-square:  They just are not as common as apartments.

you actually asked?

It's easier to apologize later then to ask permission before.

attach lamp chains to the walls and run them from one side to the other and hang your lights from these chains since he didn't say anything about the walls, just ceiling. We had to do this with my buddies room because the ceiling was too high to hang a light from.

Fantastic ideas. I feel way better. If the putting something in writing doesn't work. Can someone tell me about lamp chains to string from the walls? Where do I find them?

Its not the holes for hanging the light that is the problem. Its the electrical wiring coming thru the ceiling thats the problem. Tell your landlord you will have an electrician of his choosing install the wire properly. Then get an estimate to remove the wiring and fill the electrical outlet hole from the same electrician. Pay for the electrician to install and give the landord the money to remove the wiring and filling the outlet hole. It will probably cost you around 300-350 to do this.

This will show your landlord that your are willing to pay for a professional job. It will also give your landlord more confidence about you as a tenant.
