Good mechanics!!! And always concentrate on the straight in shots as much as you do the hard shots. Old timer told me you will miss more straight in shots than anything. BECAUSE YOU RELAX because they are easy!!
 
Critically evaluate every piece of advice people give you and every interesting phenomenon that you come across. Think for yourself about how to improve your skill by taking the useful bits of information you recieve and discarding the bits you don't find useful. Don't be too closed minded, but don't automatically accept at face value every crazy idea the old rail bird that never actually plays has.

Note: you don't have to actually reject their information to their face. Just do it on your own time.

Stance and alignment -- these 2 things (or call it one) cause most other problems, too.

On every shot try and do something offensive. And if you cannot do that, do something that keeps your opponent from doing something offensive.

Two things come to mind.
(1) Biting off more than you can chew. That is: Underestimating your opponent. In short. Level the playing field.
(2) Selling out. That is: Allowing your emotions to dictate your shot selection. In short. Play smart. :smile:
 
When your opponent scratches, if your going to shoot at a ball either shoot
one that's closest to the head-string or closest to your pocket.
 
The cue ball is more important than the object balls.

Think about shots in an all the way through thought process. What happens if I miss? What happens if I roll the cue ball too far/short. Would it be better to bunt and hook or to leave a low percentage shot.

You have to reteach the thinking process. Its not run and gun..... unless youre Scott Frost... :grin:

When I was learning the game I asked an old guy how to play 1 pocket, basically what he said was always keep the cue ball on the opposite side of the other players pocket without a shot or was it the same side:grin:

Not sure why you think that PJ.I think just as long as your playing some one with around the same skills as yourself its a great game to play at all levels. Thanks for your post.
