Pockets really showing the players up

I am amazed at the number of shots being missed!

You shouldn't be. This is a little more accurate to the top players abliities than the edited television matches. Although I'm sure the tighter pockets have a little to do with it.

I can't see jack $hit as I ain't got Sky Sports, is there anywhere online I can watch this for free? :)

i havent seen much but one thing i will say is that as soon as the 'loud ass dong' bleeping comes on as a fellow poster eloquently put it, the player becomes odds on favourite to miss. saw both archer and souquet miss easy shots because of it. i know i've picked unfortunate examples being as they arent exactly known for lightning fast play but they werent being slow at all.

What are the pocket sizes??

Thanks,

They look to be at least 4 and 1/2, maybe smaller, I don't think the pocket size has as much to do with the misses as the players just being out of their game. The last match where Rodney demolished Niels he didn't have any trouble running the tables. Dominant performance by Rodney.

Believe it or not, but in most cases, it's not the pocket widtch that makaes pockets play unpredictable, it's the material used for the pocket fascings.

If wooden or rubber pocket facings are used, this is complete crap, as they can and will make a pocket play a little unpredictable when attempting to make a ball, whereas the club I play in has 2x 3mm/4mm thick leather facings on their tables, that were cut from a sheet of leather, to the shape of the cushion rubber, after being glued onto the ends of each rubber, and boy the are still WPC tight, but they play accurate and true to the pocket's cut without any balls unpredictably jarring or bobbling back up again.

Just my 2 cents worth from experience.

at the begining of the broadcast they said the pocket will NOT accept 2 balls at a time, so being the superbrain that I am ;) they must be 4-7/16 or less.

Gerry

I would appreciate the exact size if anyone manages to measure them. Jay? Jerry? please :)

For those of us who aren't there, could you explain what a "loud ass dong" is?

Shelf depth has a lot to do with it as well, with deeper shelves obviously meaning more balls stay up if they don't hit the center of the pocket.

why they are missing

I have a very easy explanation as to why these guys are missing more than in a typical televised match.

In most televised matches, they only show the finals and semi finals. In other words, you only get to watch the guys playing that have made it through many other matches, and are very likely in dead stroke and on top of their game.

A challenge match offers no guarentee that they will be in stroke. In a way, that is the beauty. Everybody plays great when things are going well, but to watch champions handle themselves against talented opposition in a tough format is, in my opinion, much more impressive.

That is the problem with just watching the finals. You don't get to see pros handle first match jitters, or sets where they are struggling. This can be more educational than watching players in dead stroke run out open racks.

Good points, Tin Man. I also think playing when other people are depending on you can affect how you play.

I would argue that. The pockets on my Brunswick are a little over 4.5" and they won't accept 2 balls at a time. That's Because you measure them at the points, but they get narrower the further back you go. Does that make any sense?

You mean a noise alert for the time clock running out of time ?
Many of the shots that I saw being missed, were balls hitting the long rail before arriving at the pocket. The pocket proceeded to turn them away as if they were attempting to enter Ruth's Chris Steakhouse without a reservation.... imo

Gotcha...but I think that pocket sizes are typcially quoted as the distance between the points. Yes, the pocket narrow back of the points but if the ball can get past the point it will "bank in" off the facing (given pocket speed).

But of course, you are correct that the angle of the facing...the type of facing material and the depth of the ledge sure do affect how forgiving or unforgiving the pocket might be.

Jim

Pocket size

I have nothing with which to measure the pockets but two balls, side by side, will go in about an inch and a quarter before jamming up. I agree with the earlier poster, the facings are really tough and are sending anything not hit to the center of the pocket right back out. The pocket cut makes these pockets really tight.

the shot clock beeper. it's really loud and prominent and once it starts bleeping you really don't fancy the player to make the shot!. i know i wouldnt anyway. it's just not in the spirit of the game having a huge alarm ringing. cheapens the game i think and bad for the sport.

and btw here's the original post containg the phrase "loud ass dong" courtesy of johnnyt. post 10
